Title: Pillion foot pegs help please
Post by: hadyoursister on 29 August 2012, 12:38:06 am
Hi im getting nonstop earache from the wife about her pillion position and need to get hold of extended footpegs for her.  Im about as usefull as a chocolate teapot when it comes to making things so could really do with buying some.  I know it's a long shot but if anyone has any lying around or would be willing to make some all expenses paid and labour please let me know and we can sort something out. I have a 1998 fzs 600.

Think the Mk 1.5 (plastic grabrail, 2000? onwards) had lower pillion pegs.

Read the 2000 model very carefully, especially the exhaust part, but it MAY be workable:

Hi

The wife was getting cramp on the pillion.
So I made some Rear Footrest Hangers that moved the footrests forward 50mm and down 50mm
you can get the 30mm x 5mm steel strip 1M long from the larger B&Q's

Hi
Use the Fazer footrest hanger capscrews to hold the new brackets to the bike (heads are thinner see pic's) then std capscrews for the footrest hanger to bracket.
The 8mm bolt goes through the 10mm threaded captive nut on the exhaust can.

Have a look at M&P accessories, they have "vario adjustable footrests" with various length of extensions.

I fitted a second hand set from a 2000 model to my sons bike Fazer as his girlfriend was finding it was very cramped on the back.  She says it is fine ever since.
The 2000 to 20003 models pillon footrest were about 50mm longer than the 1998/1999 model.

Hello everyone,

newbie to this forum.

I own a 2003 FZS1000 and would love to persuade my wife to get on the back more often.
We all know there isn't much comfort too riding this bike as a pillion.
Hence my reply to this "old" topic.

What do you use as spacers between the new bracket and the original hanger?
Do you tighten the new capscrews until the hanger hits the capscrew underneath?
Or am I missing something alltogether?
Why do you need two different diameter holes again?

Hope this mod convinces my better half!

Thanx.

Just leave here at home or get a louder exhaust to avoid the ear ache.

2000+ also has a thicker pillion seat area, the seats are a straight swap so hunt ebay for one of those, plus, as said above the pillion footrest hangers are longer after 2000, another straight swap.

He's got a 1000, does that still apply? I know the 600's changed hangers.

Buy a sportsbike, take her on that, then she'll think the FZS is a sofa afterwards! To be fair, it is pretty comfy on the back, and I'm a 5 foot 10 male!

Which part of the opening post was missed?
Not forgetting this is the fzs600 section

Welcome to the site.
Be aware this is for the 600 and I'm not sure how the 1000 Fazer differs, probably very little.

I have not done this mod but will try to answer your questions and YamFazMan can correct me when he returns.
I don't think he has used any spacers as he says the original cap screws have a thinner head than standard and are to be used for attaching the bracket to the frame bracket. Certainly do NOT tighten the hanger screws if it is hitting the head of the bracket screw. If it does you could use washers to pack it out.
Two different holes in the small bracket is because the captive nut in the exhaust bracket is 10mm x 1.25 pitch (fine series) rather than the more readily available 1.5mm pitch (course series). Since he needed a shorter bolt he has used a standard 8mm bolt to pass through the 10mm nut and put a 8mm nut on the end of the 10mm nut. Hence a 10mm clearance hole where the bracket attaches to the hanger and 8mm clearance at the exhaust end.
Two different size holes in the large bracket are because the two for the hanger are tapped 8mm thread and the other two are clearance holes for bolting to the captive nuts on the frame bracket. If you used nuts behind the new bracket you would need to pack it out and use longer screws to the frame with compensating spacer etc for the exhaust bracket.
Hope that all makes sense.  :\

Got a 98 bike and wife finds pillion uncomfortable.she's 5ft 9 with 31 inside leg.
So the 2000 on hangers give 50mm more leg stretch and straight swop?
Anyone got pair for sale??

Exhaust angle is also affected, but 'join' can be readjusted into position.  Worst case scenario is that the link-pipe gasket will start leaking & need replaced.

I swapped mine for the later hangers / pegs.   There is a decent improvement with the later hangers, but I'm not sure if it's 50mm of difference? They move the pegs both downward & forward a bit.  For maximum difference you could also fit the later seat which has more pillion foam.

If you adopted YamFazMan's idea on top of the later hangers I'm sure a 6 foot+ pillion would have no issues.

i put the newer hangers on mine they do work a lot, i also recovered the seat and added about 30mm of padding to rider + pillion seat which helped a lot.

exhaust wasnt a problem it still bolts on fine
