FZS600 Fazer / Foxeye mirrors
« on: 01 June 2015, 01:14:47 pm »
Just upgrade from a boxeye to foxeye and working out some of the differences.

The mirrors are clearly different, but are they supposed to be foldable?  If they are, mine are very stiff, and I want to be sure before I start trying to force them.

Assuming they are suppoesed to move, the boxeye ones went backwards and forwards, is that the same with the foxeye?  The rubber around the mount looks different, so I'm not sure.

FZS600 Fazer / Touch up paints - 2000 and 2003 silvers
« on: 28 May 2015, 02:22:06 pm »
I'm looking for some paint to clean up my bikes a bit.  I've found from searching the Yamaha codes (SM1 and S1), but was wondering if anyone has found any close matches in car paints (easier to get hold of and generally cheaper).

I've currently got 2 bikes and 3 end cans, so one of them has to go.

There's a choice of 2, both Scorpion, stainless steel oval cans, road legal (e marked) with removable baffles.  Can be supplied with or without the link pipe (offers need to allow for this, asking £ for the link pipe on it's own). I don't really mind which one goes, and will sell the one that gets the best offer.

Postage is included in the offer, but if you are outside the UK, bear in mind your offer may need to be higher to offset the higher postage costs.

If there is no interest/insufficient offers, they will be listed on ebay.

Happy to receive offers in this post or privately in PM.

Can A:
Newest of the two. Blends from oval to tri-oval at the rear end.  Quietest of the two.  There is a small dent near the mounting strap, but otherwise in excellent condition.

Can B:
Slightly older, but still in excellent condition. IMO sounds the better of the two. Mounting rubber has a split in it, but does not affect fit.

Please ask if you have any questions or want some more pictures.

General / Pitted forks - how bad are these?
« on: 18 May 2015, 02:51:35 pm »
Just been to look at a potential purchase.  Overall not too bad, but the biggest concern are the upper forks.  As you can see in these pics(n.b. the pictures don't really do them justice, they look rougher in real life.), the uppers are pitting quite badly.  It is well above the travel, so won't affect the seals, however, how quickly are these likely to deteriorate?  Is this something that should be a reason not to buy the bike?

On a related note, would the uppers from my boxeye swap directly with these?

As mentioned in another post,  I've seen a bike I like the look of,  but it's a long way from me.

Is anyone willing/able to visit the dealer and give it a once over,  let me know whether it's worth having or not?

General / Buying long distance
« on: 16 May 2015, 09:32:03 pm »
I'm looking to upgrade my box eye to a fox eye.  I've seen an ideal bike - right year, good mileage, loaded with extras worth having, good colour and most importantly at the right price.

The problem I have is that it's too far away to travel just to look at it.

I'm now in a quandary,  as I dont like buying unseen, however this does look like a cracking deal, and it is being sold by a dealer.

What do you think?  Should I throw caution to the wind and go for it or be more sensible and maybe regret it if I don't find one that looks as good?

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - sprocket cover bolt (FZS600)
« on: 06 May 2015, 01:45:37 pm »
I need a bolt to replace the one that's missing from here:

It's one of the short ones.

Anyone got any spare?

FZS600 Fazer / Loose sprocket cover
« on: 05 May 2015, 06:04:25 pm »
Riding home today and my clutch suddenly went from a couple of mm play in the lever to almost all travel.  When I got home and investigated I found 1 (lower) bolt missing and 3 others loose and almost out too, allowing the cover to flex out when pulling the clutch in.  I've tightened them all back up and will get a replacement for the missing one, but I am concerned as to why this has happened all of a sudden.

Has anyone had this before, or is this a rare occurrence?

BTW the bolts were last touched when I changed the chain - about 11K miles ago.

FZS600 Fazer / Fork Seal replacement
« on: 08 February 2015, 10:39:03 pm »
One of the fork seals has started leaking and I'm going to replace it.

I've read the guide and plenty of other posts on the subject, so know what's entailed.

What I am not so sure about is whether I need to replace the bushing too.  Budget is tight, so I don't want to spend out if I don't have to.  If the bushings are worn, what's the downside of not replacing them?

Bike has done just over 60K and I don't know if/when any of the fork internals were serviced.  The dust caps do look a bit chewed, as if they have been removed/lifted and re-used.

FZS600 Fazer / Gear lever confusion
« on: 12 December 2014, 12:22:00 pm »
I hope someone can help me identify what year this gear lever is from.

The spring on the footrest broke, so I bought a complete footrest/gear lever/heel guard assembly off ebay, choosing one from a 2000 bike that matches my own.

When fitting it, I found it wouldn't fit as the gear lever is straight, whereas my one is slightly S shaped.

I've looked on ebay for more examples, but it's a bit of a minefield of mis-information. It looks like the S lever is from Gen2 bikes, but then why is it on my Gen1?

Does anyone know what years/models the straight lever is from, so I can resell it with an accurate description?

FZS600 Fazer / Footrest spring broken
« on: 05 December 2014, 06:20:24 pm »
Is this repairable, or do I have to replace the footrest assembly?

I suspect the latter, as I've not been able to find the spring for sale on it's own.

If that is the case, what bikes and years can I get one from, I assume it is a fairly standard piece.

General / Can I borrow some carb balancing gauges?
« on: 16 June 2014, 12:36:55 pm »
Anyone near(ish) Luton or Hemel Hempstead willing to let me borrow (take away or use at your gaff) some gauges to balance my carbs?

I've had my bike 2 years now and this has been on the list of things to do for a long time.  I was planning to get some gauges myself, but an ever increasing price of repairing my Camaro means I've not got the spare cash to do so until next year (if I'm lucky)

FZS600 Fazer / Parts swap - box eye to fox
« on: 05 February 2014, 12:23:05 pm »
Apart from the obvious (fairing, lights, tank) are there any parts from a boxeye that cannot be swapped onto a fox?

I'm looking at upgrading, but on a budget.  I've found a fox that's a bit rough and needs some tidying up, and am hoping to be able to swap stuff from my current box eye.

For example, can I direct swap - wheels, brakes(discs and/or calipers), hugger, seat and more?

General / High mileage bike, but lower mileage engine - would you?
« on: 05 February 2014, 12:19:53 pm »
I'm looking at a used bike for sale. The bike has done about 120K miles, but owner claims the engine was swapped and the current one has only 40K.

You can see from the condition of the bike (grips, footpegs) that it has done that sort of mileage, but most of that can be replaced/tidied up. The important bits of the bike look to be well maintained.

What do you think?  Is it worth a punt - good asking price, with a bit of work to do to bring it up to scratch, or is such a high mileage not worth going for?

The seller says he will put it through an MOT prior to sale.

For Sale & Wanted / FS: FZS600 rear wheel
« on: 24 January 2014, 01:19:05 pm »
For sale, rear wheel from a box-eye FZS600, but I believe that it will fit the fox-eye as well, and possibly other bikes too.

Generally in good condition, apart from one dent on the rim - see the pictures.  With the tyre off as it is at the moment, it probably won't take too much to straighten it out a bit.  The tyre was sealing properly on the rim, with no leaking.

As pictured, no disc or sprocket carrier.  Bearings look to be in good condition.

Postage is £12, or collect from Luton or Hemel Hempstead.

Open to offers - Proceeds go to the original owner - ChristoT.

General / Screw in back tyre - repair or not?
« on: 09 January 2014, 09:06:05 am »
The picture below says it all  :'(   (If anyone can't see the pics, it's a half worn PR3, with a large screw just over 1/2 the between the centre line and the edge, so closer to the edge than centre)

Is it suitable for repair?  I've read elsewhere that some places won't repair ZR tyres, but what about a DIY job?

Also, if DIY, does the tyre have to come off the rim, or can it be done 'from the outside'?  Can anyone recommend any good kits?

General / Respect to the LOFOs
« on: 05 December 2013, 12:43:55 pm »
I had a trip into London yesterday, coming in from the M4, cut down into Chelsea, across the bridge and past Battersea and onto Stockwell via Vauxhall.  From there, back up across the River and up to White City.  All in rush hour.

I have to say, it was a challenge. Enjoyable, but tough going. I certainly wouldn't want to do it every day, it would knacker me out.

General / Is it just me, but when you see another biker ahead of you....
« on: 08 October 2013, 01:13:29 pm »
Do you immediately think 'PREY' and absolutely have to catch them and make the pass?

I had the opposite the other day, where I spotted a bike coming up behind quite quick.  It was a nice windy B road, with a fair amount of traffic.  It was a great game of cat and mouse, me trying to get ahead and him trying to keep up.

He didn't pass me though  :D

FZS600 Fazer / Clutch behaviour
« on: 08 October 2013, 01:10:57 pm »
This is my first bike that I have been mechanically minded on, and those before it were 20 odd years ago.  I'm not sure what the correct feel on the clutch lever is, and want to find out if I have a problem looming, or if what I'm getting is normal.

I've adjusted the clutch cable a few times, at the lever end, as described by the manuals, so that there is about 1mm of slack before the lever starts to pull.  Over time, presumably due to cable stretch, the amount of slack has increased and I have to pull the lever a bit further to disengage the clutch.

Of late, it seems that the bite point is getting further away rather than closer to me.  There isn't much slack, but I barely touch the lever and the clutch is free.  I've not noticed any slip (yet), so I'm not sure if the clutch is wearing out and due an overhaul or not.

I've not looked at the lower end of the adjustment, I assumed that it was just another cable adjustment , just at the other end.  Is this right, or would adjusting it at that end move the bite point?

Any help and advice greatfully received.

General / New chain, stiff link problem
« on: 20 May 2013, 07:32:02 pm »
I've just put a new DID chain on, but the soft link is stiff. It's my second go at it, as the first one was also stiff, but I thought it was my fault, going heavy handed with the riveting tool. I know this isn't the case the second time round, as I was extra careful.

The link was stiff right from when the inner pins were pushed through, before the outer plate was put on.

I was hoping that plenty of wriggling and a decent amount of lube (scottoiler run on prime for 10 minutes) would resolve it, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I've not ridden it yet, and am looking for ideas on what to do about it.

FZS600 Fazer / Rear wheel bearing -looking for hints and tips
« on: 19 May 2013, 08:24:09 pm »
Having a go at my first chain and sprocket change this afternoon, but as I pulled the rear wheel out, the left spacer fell out and exposed a totally knackered bearing.

It will obviously need to be replaced, but this is another job of which I have zero experience. I'm looking for as much info and advice as I can get before I attack this in a few days time.

Are these bearings ones that are best replaced with OEM, or would Wemoto parts or similar be OK?

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

Hi All.  Insurance is coming up for renewal in the next 3 weeks and I'm about to start looking round for quotes.  If seen from other posts that some companies will take note of any mods, without them affecting the premium.

What I'd like to know is which companies do this, and which don't (or should be avoided anyway)

TIA

FZS600 Fazer / Sprocket and Chain advice needed
« on: 25 April 2013, 09:11:26 pm »
Been having some really odd noises coming from down on the left side.  Having read lots of posts, I have pulled the sprocket cover (found a nut  :) ) and checked the sprocket. There is ever so slight indication of 'shark tooth', so I am assuming this is shot and needs replacing.

The rear sprocket looks good and the chain looks to have lots of adjustment left, based on there being more alignment lines behind the axle and in the front of it.  That said, I followed the Haynes guide and measured 10 links.  It measured 154mm, which is 3mm more than the suggested maximum stretch, so I am assuming that is shot too, and I really should be looking to replace all three.

I think I read somewhere that the genuine Yamaha front sprocket is sufficiently superior to aftermarket ones to make it a good purchase, but what about the rear - does it make much difference what make/type you get?

I'm also looking for advice on what chain to get.  I am an all weather Mon-Fri commuter, so want something that will last.  I'm not bothered about bling and cost isn't too much of an issue. I don't mind paying more for a decent product.

What can you tell me?  Thanks in advance...
