Hi fellow foccers
I recently installed the multi-gauge (amazing work - thanks Christian!) and observed a problem with the water temperature readout. It is permanently showing a dash <-> and this means that the reading is either too high or too low. Given that I've tried waiting from a cold start until my coolant started to boil, I guess this suggests my water temp sensor is not working. This can explain why my engine runs hotter than any other FZS1000 rider I know! When caught in a traffic snarl for only 10 minutes the coolant starts to overflow via the hoses below the right footpeg.
Would any of you foccers happen to know from which OEM part category this sensor is found and what is the name of the part? I've been thru the entire parts catalogue and could not figure out where it is. The water temp electrical signal to the dashboard must originate from somewhere on the bike itself, right?
Thanks in advance mates!

Hi and welcome - It sounds possible that your thermostat could be stuck shut which would stop the coolant from circulating properly and cause the engine to overheat, but if your outside air temperature is really 31c it could just be that. Just to be sure I'd take the thermostat out and put it in a pan of cold water with a thermometer and confirm that by 85c it is fully open (8mm valve lift).
As for what measures the temperature, there is a thermo unit located within the thermostat housing itself, this can be removed and checked but I'd get a Haynes manual or somesuch as it involves water, electricity and risk of personal injury.

Another thing to check ,is the fan coming on,

Beat me to it :)
I would not bother testing the thermostat with a thermometer, mainly because I do not have a thermometer, you might as well just replace it while you have the housing off, also flush the coolant out to get rid of any sludge and replace with new.
Or you could move from Singapore to here in Britain where the temperature is more likely to be 31f than 31c. :lol

Also check you wired the gauge up correctly! Did the light ever come on , on the original clock

hahaha... i'm happy here in the tropics!
the fan comes on when:
1 - about 3 to 4 minutes after the bike is warmed up from a cold start, and stops once i engage gear 1;
2 - sometimes when stuck in traffic at a light.
i will double check the gauge when i have the time to remove the inner panels and the instrument cluster. possibly in the next few days.
tex, what light are you talking about? i removed the filament bulbs that provided the back lighting, and installed a white LED strip. Here's a video. https://youtu.be/HwQzhbcMuWc

I think he is talking about the over temp light just to the right of the clock (am/pm one)

That never comes on at all.

That's the one :D that could be part of your problem if that is not working it might be why the temp is not on the multi gauge, ask Christian if it works via that circuit

What kind of meter is it, and where did u get it ? Thanks

Couple of years old but this thread should answer your questions - http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,13218.0.html (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,13218.0.html)

It's Christian's multi gauge. I got it from him.
