My best MPG
« on: 14 October 2012, 06:24:38 pm »
Last time I tanked up, I decided to see how much I could get out of the old girl by riding more sedately. I'm not talking about purposely riding for 150 miles on a motorway at 56 mph - that would be pointless. I'm talking about typical rideouts but with sensible takeoffs, smooth acceleration and sticking rigorously to the speed limits.

150 odd miles later, I managed 47mpg. My worst was 36.7mpg,  so not what you'd call a dramatic difference, but over time it'll add up. Will I stick to the new "eco" riding style - maybe!

My maths is not my strong point but I make the difference between lowest and highest mpg an improvement in the order of 28%.

Leaving drama to the queens, I'd call that significant at the very least. :)

Mine consistently averages 45 mpg.  Ivan's Full Monty, Akra full system and host of other mods. :)

28% - hmmm, looking at it that way , I guess you're right Mike. And riding sedately allowed me to take in all the surrounding beauty throughout my rideout.

Is that the bridge at Dumfries at the bottom? Reminds me of a similar picture I stopped (on double yellows) to take but had to move on quickly when a plod approached and my tyre didn't need a close inspection!!!

Gen 2, fully faired. All standard eg no Power Commander, or FCE. Standard can. 9500 miles. 3rd ride, bought 3 weeks ago.

I just did the sums, and was amazed to see that todays ride out resulted in 53mpg. 180 miles. This was rarely sticking to any speed limits (those signs never work anyway, I go straight past them and my bike doesn't slow down at all....lol), and not riding with any sort of economy in mind. I was riding with friends to the south coast and back, on dual carriageways, A & B roads, and having a blast. 53 mpg? I can live with that.

On my regular commute I consistently get about 185 miles to a red light - 17litres (=3.74gallons)= 49mpg and I promise you, I rigorously ignore speed limits. '04 gen1, aftermarket end can, no other significant mods.

Odd! Must be my riding style, because I've always seemed to get worse MPG than other people irrespective of the bike. Even on the FJR1300 I used to average 39mpg while other Feejers reckoned they averaged 50+

Just put the second tankfull of unleaded into my standard 10 plate gen 2, 12.6 litres with 102 miles on the trip. That works out at 33-34 mpg :eek :eek and I wasn't riding quickly either!!! Maybe I should have bought a gen 1 :rolleyes

Right, just done a 'max mileage' test on the gen2. Covered 92 miles In 3 seperate rides over all road types. Stayed below 55 generally, rolled off the throttle early for hazzards, and changed gear at 3k, rarely going above 4k. No overtakes. Used 8.8 litres of unleaded! That equates to almost 50mpg :D :D

Thank god that's over, it was the most boring 3 rides of my life! :z :z :z

Now back to getting the EXUP working again, and finding the redline :D :D

I've filled up twice since I got my second fazer and hope to Fuelly all of the fill ups. My last fill was 54 mpg and that was riding fairly sedate, but still leaving the lights quickish and nearly all in town. I could definitely ride more economically than that as well.

The fazer 600's are really good on juice. Did my 'ride like a nun' test on my old one and got something like 240 miles from a tank. I think it was about 60mpg.
Some of the bike magazines have reported about 70mpg  :eek :eek  now that would be a boring ride!

I changed from Gen 1 (55mpg) to Gen 2 and found the same, didn't shed any tears when I wrote it off after 3 months, now have a Fazer 8 and on trip yesterday looks as if it will be as good as Gen 1 without the top end, as now almost run in so can stop watching the rev counter and enjoy it :)
