Hi all,

I am looking for some panniers and the kit to fit them to my 2003 FZS 600.

Hard panniers preferred, though decent waterproof soft would be considered.

Cheers,

James

For Sale & Wanted / Re: SOLD FZS600 (2000)
« on: 03 May 2017, 02:07:54 pm »
Reluctantly having to sell my fazer due to that old chestnut - a new baby. It never misses a beat, and for a couple of years was used as a daily runner (but always been garaged over night!) New chain and sprocket as well as a full service just last year.

Few extras I've installed:
Stainless downpipes
Delkevic exhaust
12v charger inside the nearside fairing

Battery holds charge great - hadn't started it in a few months and started first time yesterday! All instruments / lights / electrics also in perfect working order. Also selling my panniers, tank-bag, Oxford lock and trickle charger along with the bike as I won't be needing them anymore.

MOT'd until May. 25859 miles on clock. First registered in 2000 (W Reg). V5 in my name.

There is a bit of paint missing on the engine cover (pictured) and a few scrapes on backs of mirrors, but the bike is 16 years old!

£1200. Bike is in Marske-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire.
Pictures can be found on gumtree listing: https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/2000-yamaha-fzs600-fazer-w-panniers-tank-bag-and-oxford-lock/1210167507

(Test rides will only be allowed with asking price in cash in my hand)

Hi,

Any chance the panniers are still available?

Thanks.

Hi Tory,

Any chance these are still available?

Would you know if they would be compatible with a 2003 FZS600

Thanks,

James

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Renthal bar ends
« on: 28 April 2017, 10:16:42 pm »
I used these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oxford-Motorcycle-Slim-Flat-Bar-Ends-End-Weights-2-BLACK-13mm-22mm-Handlebars-/191993697066?_trksid=p2385738.m2548.l4275

They are quite thin which is good, as renthals tend to be wider than the OEM and therefore hamper filtering.

No point sticking and extra couple of inches of bar end to them. Plus the above look quiet neat and flush with the OEM grips.

General / Re: Front fork re chrome Vs New pattern stanchions?
« on: 05 April 2017, 08:52:11 am »

Right, so I gave up looking for some good second hand stanchions and had resigned myself to the fact that I was looking at a £175 bill for re chroming. But just in case, I thought id have a look on German Ebay and found lots of aftermarket stanchions a bit cheaper than the UK, but not when you add in the shipping costs. Then I found a guy selling only two stanchions for a Pre Exup FZR 1000 giving the correct Yamaha Part number, I contacted him and struck a deal for £120 for the pair delivered. They arrived today, in a big box with Yamaha on the side. I unpacked them and immediately found that these are not aftermarket stanchions, they are genuine Yamaha, complete with the correct slightly faded with age Yamaha sticker with the part number. Lovely deep chrome and ready to go.

To say that I'm chuffed is an understatement.

Hey Billy,

Do you have a link to where you purchased these?

Cheers,

James

FZS600 Fazer / Re: 15W Fork Oil. Does it make that much difference?
« on: 15 March 2017, 08:04:26 am »
Best way is by measuring the air gap at the top to make sure they're both even.

You need to be careful showing that picture because the air gap and oil levels are different for forks without adjusters compared to ones that do have them.

98/99 models (without fork adjusters on top):
475cc oil
121mm air gap

00-03 models (with fork adjusters on top):
465cc oil
132mm air gap

Just for the record, i am of the opinion that the fork adjusters do absolutely sod all.
When i had them on my forks they were always screwed right in to attempt to firm up the front end but with little effect.
Due to another issue i changed my forks for an older set that didn't have adjusters on then put the 15w oil in and there was a very nice difference as far as handling was concerned, and it was so suitable for me that i just didn't bother swapping the adjusters back over.
If you ever change the fork oil then upgrading to 15w is a small mod that i would totally recommend without any doubt, that can improve the front end handling of the bike for no extra cost.

Thanks Darrsi, you always come up with the goods.

1 litre should do it, but there isn't a lot to spare, so don't spill any.

Thanks Jamie

You wont need more than 1 Litre of fork oil. The actual amount needed per side is mentioned in the Haynes or workshop manual-check the downloads section on here. From memory its 400 AND SOMETHING ml per leg-actual amount varies with model year of forks fitted.

Thanks Dave!

I put 15W in my bike 18 months ago. I think the difference is astounding. And for that kind of money, its a well worth while job.

Hi all,

Apologies for dragging up an old post, i was going to do the 15W oil change this weekend, how many liters of oil should i buy?  I can find the air gap values, but cant seem to to find how much that translates to in ml in each fork?

just need a rough idea, no point buying loads if i don't need it, or get halfway through and realise i don't have enough!

Thanks,

For Sale & Wanted / Swap a fzs600 for fzs1000?
« on: 19 January 2017, 04:09:04 pm »
Hi all,

Would there be any interest in swapping my 2003 FZS600 for a 1000?  The difference in price could be made up in cash.

My bike is mint, 17,000 miles on it.  Road pilots front and back went on about 500/1000 miles ago. Front pads are new, braided front lines. pretty much fully stock except for the end can.

It was really just to gauge if there was any interest, if someone is looking to downsize maybe?

Cheers,

James

FZS600 Fazer / Re: What do you reckon to these springs?
« on: 15 December 2016, 11:52:30 am »
Progressive springs are a bit of a compromise - they might make the bike feel a bit more comfy over bumps but they won't give proper control in the same manner that a set of weight matched linear springs will. Depends on your riding style, but if you ride the bike more for enjoyment I would definitely suggest a set of linears.

Thanks JoeRock,

I have been having a good look round the site and there is loads to learn on this.

All i really want is to kill the front end dive when you throw on the anchors at speed.  But at the same time i like to do a bit of touring in the summer so it would be good to not have it set up to stiff that it becomes jarring on a long cruise.

Progressives seemed the natural choice, but do you reckon they would actually do much to stop the front end dive?

Hyperpro have a pretty good rep but not exactly the cheapest  :( Wirth springs on ebay £40 cheaper, tho you'd need to buy fork oil too. From memory Hagon springs are also cheap-ish

They're all much over muchness as progressives are meant to be a one size fits all (or more precisely, a spring rate that suits everyone)

Progressive springs would do you  fine as long as you also change the fork oil to 15w.

Personally I prefer linear springs suited to your exact weight along with cartridge emulators, but obviously more £££

Thanks guys much appreciated!

FZS600 Fazer / What do you reckon to these springs?
« on: 07 December 2016, 04:07:34 pm »
Afternoon all,

My work have kindly given me some tokens that i can use at my local bike parts store  :D (Laguna Motorcycles).  I am after some progressive springs so I rang them up and they said they have the below in stock:

http://www.performanceparts-ltd.com/road/Yamaha/1057_fzs-600-fazer-00-03/2003/categories/suspension-and-handling/hyperpro-shocks--springs/SP-YA06-SSA004

Has anyone had any experience with this brand?

I think they would also order in pretty much anything i ask for, so what is generally regarded as the best?

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

James

FZS600 Fazer / Re: The dreaded ethanol !!

This brought my attention to the dangers of ethanol,  this article is pretty clear it is not the best!

http://www.cycleworld.com/real-world-look-at-alcohol-in-your-tank/?src=SOC&dom=fb

Yet according to BP they do not put ethanol on "BP Ultimate";

Maybe there is some value in the expensive stuff after all?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: What have you done to your FZS600 bike today
« on: 02 October 2016, 09:36:34 pm »
Finally got around to a bit of winter prep.  Downpipes keyed and sprayed with the good ol' back to black.  Centerstand got a hammeriting (a couple of touch ups on the frame too), under the tank got a dose of PTFE spray while I was at it. Next weeks job is some fresh oil and oil filter and a magnetic sump plug. Account for fresh front pads and some wheel paint + stickers and its made for an expensive month, but it will hopefully keep her tidy.   :D :D :D

Had a look at the front sprocket, I couldn't believe the amount of chain lube/ road crap that had built up in there!  :eek :eek :eek
