As i said earlier mine fused itself on, but this was definitely to do with the problem so count me in, that's two.

I would imagine any problems relating to the original 9mm front sprocket nut, whether that's stripping the threads, welding itself on (like mine), totally disappearing, etc.

Is the point of this to quantify the number of defects and then send the results to Yamaha UK so that in future any claims get viewed faourably?

If you check the fix I put in the downloads section http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads) it has been downloaded 155 times, that would equate to at least 140 who probably had the problem if you exclude those who may have downloaded it out of curiosity.
The fix is still holding after 3250 miles. I would like to know if any of those who downloaded what I did have tried it.
I started a new topic http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,4546.msg45712.html#msg45712 (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,4546.msg45712.html#msg45712) on the issues last September after finding my shaft was down to 2 threads and the issues I had with Yamaha to try resolving it. I finally got a little satisfaction in way of getting all the parts I required to repair it at half retail price in a take it or leave option after trying to get the half price on the trade price.
For anyone who might consider stripping the engine to replace the shaft this is the list of parts you will require. I am lucky enough in that I can undertake the repair myself which rules out the labour costs.

1           5DM-11181-00              GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD
1           5DM-11351-00              GASKET, CYLINDER
1           4HM-12213-00              GASKET, TENSIONER CASE
4           90430-10188                     GASKET - OIL DELIVERY PIPE
4           3YF-14613-01                GASKET, EXHAUST PIPE
1           93210-12152                     O-RING – CRANKCASE
1           90430-06166                    GASKET – CRANKCASE
1           93210-06422                    O-RING – CRANKCASE
1           4TV-15461-00              GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER
1           4TV-15462-00               GASKET, CRANKCASE COVER
1           93210-48364                   O-RING – CLUTCH
1           4TV-17421-00              AXLE, DRIVE
1           93440-30077                   CIRCLIP - AXEL DRIVE
1           93102-35368                   OIL SEAL - AXEL DRIVE
1           90891-10124                  SPROCKET NUT, WASHER, KIT
1           4JH-16340-00               PUSH LEVER ASSY
1           4YR-15427-00              COVER CAP
1           90890-85508-00          TUBE YAMAHA BOND 1215
For those who are wondering why it requires a full engine strip is that Yamaha in their wisdom put 2 crankcase bolts under the cylinder and the only way to get at them is to remove the cylinder

Even though I have the parts now, I will not do anything unless my fix fails. Interestingly I measured the threads on the new shaft and they measured 17.80mm. I found the measurements I took when my sprocket fell off originally and it was 17.35mm and my shaft at the moment is 17.2mm.

Obviously I am another who has the issue and I thought that this was done before when someone posted the issue on the old site with the same intentions in trying to get numbers to contact yamaha and it seemed to fizzle out. As far as I can make out I am one of the very few who got anything out of Yamaha in relation to the issue. It really renders a bike scrap as putting a seconhand engine is not a good fix since that engine may have the same problem. Hopefully my fix lasts and solves the problem for me once and for all.
Rant over for today  :grumble :grumble

+1 to above, no issues (84k on the clock!) but I've updated the nut anyways :)

would the importers listen? they know the problem exists but claim ignorance when pushed on the subject!

My sprocket nut went the other day, heard a bit of a knock so I took the sprocket cover off and no nut or washer, got a new one on order from Hayballs Yamaha in Salisbury for 8 quid, they said it will be the updated one but it probably won't be! :P

is this just relevent to the 600 s or has anybody with the 1000 suffered with this loose nut issue
Title: Re: how many have had a loose front sprocket ?

It appears to be accross the 600 range only with the all 600 Fazers,  R6 and Thundercats being the worst offenders.
There is no hard and fast rule of years or models of the above.
I have never heard of any of the 1000s giving this trouble

Nope, its merely a matter of doing the job right. I have been working on Fazers for years..... Ask any of the old guard on here as I have worked on most of their bikes at one time or another and have rebuilt more FZSs than I can remember.

If what you say is correct why did it happen to my bike and it had never been touched. Bought the bike new and 15000 miles later the nut went awol, sprocket came off the splnes onto the threads and lost all drive just after overtaking a car with my son on the back.

My previous nut had been rust welded on! Had to lock the back wheel with a metal bar through it onto the swinger just to get it off! :eek Ordered the updated nut and washer from wemoto 2months ago and not had any problems so far(checked the other day) so no and no from me! :)

Found mine was loose at 28000 miles though it had never been touched apart from cleaning. Treated the bike to a new chain / sprockets and had the dealer fit the new nut. Still fine at 40K...

What constitutes doing the job right then? I replaced my chain and sprockets  a couple of years back, new tab washer fastened over nice and tight, a dab of locktite and torqued to the right spec [ just not in that order !] . So far no trouble and nor do I expect any,  but just in case, did I miss something ? if theres something else that  needs to be done a bit of advice  would probaly help a lot of owners out.

If you are using the original nut, it was a very thin design with very little threads. In a lot of cases (nearly 50% on this forum alone), the nut over a period of time stripped itself regardless if you had your tab washer fixed properly or if you have it torqued or locktited.

You say "so far, no trouble and you expect none"........have you actually taken off the cover and checked it?? I was riding around for a known 1,200 miles doing speeds of up 100mph on occasions and when I heard about this I did a check for peace of mind. My nut and tab washer was gone!! It was only the Grace of God a maybe a little rust that kept the sprocket on!!

Don't ask the why's and hows...but believe me this does happen....a lot!! Now you could be one of those on the lucky side of the 50%....but you need to envisage your bike locking up at whatever speed and ask yourself....do you want to take that gamble on your life on a flimsy flawed nut design??

The first positive step is to get the new BIGGER nut and washer from Fowlers or from some vendor like that. Make sure that the part number is 90891-10124

Most people are happy to just fit the new nut job in the same manner as you already have described....but there are others who are a bit more paranoid and went a step further. See link below to a PDF download from the poster "Unfazed" and you will also get an idea of whats going on and his fix.

http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=43 (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=43)

.....and see the next post for my Mickey Mouse effort with a little wire. Check your inside cover too. If it has a dampner fitted on the inside of the cover (see unfazed download for what a dampner is), then you are sorted. The sprocket will fit it hard to bypass the dampner.

Maybe we could forward the poll results to Yamaha and ask for a free upgrade? :b

Me as well, had new chain and both sprockets changed last September, garage rang me to say nut was loose and chewed up. thought it had just not been done up properly last time but obviously seems a common problem.
