Thats awful!! isnt the UK embassy doing anything about it??!?!?

Yes the reason i was looking at tours first is mainly due to security.

The route would mainly follow the trans africa route going egypt, sudan, ethiopia, kenya, tanzania, malawi, mozambique, zimbabwe, botswana, nambia, south africa and my partner grew up in cape so he know where to avoid there.

I definately want to keep away from somalia and the kenyan coastline.

Though we may have just recruited our local backstreet mechanic, who is a big hungarian guy, which would help in 2 aspects.

Just read about the problem of the front wheels snapping off on pre 2003 bmw f650s. hmmm, pushing me towards the XT 600 but how safe is it to drive with a jerrycan of fuel on the back?

okay, thanks for the websites, some good info on there.

have sent some emails to various tour and hire operators but in the meantime ive been looking a bit more into doing it independently.

the rental of a f650 would be just over £3k and a gs1200 would be £3600. but it seems you can pick up some nice f650s for £1200 on bike trader and im sure it cant cost more than 1800 to ship it over so seems more economical. My partner has family in cape town so we're thinking we could stay with them, change the plates, and sell the bikes once we're finished to save having to bring them back too. fuel shouldnt be more than £1k for the trip either and if we camp it should mean we could be able to get by on the 5k budget.

My dad reccommended using an XT 600 since its air cooled and simple to fix. not sure if this would have as good a fuel range as the bmws though?
but it may be more feasable for me (5ft 5)

Its just the border crossings we are dubious about and general security. has anyone here had experiences of borders in africa?

cheers

Hi
my partner and i are wanting to do cairo to cape town around september 2013.
we are wanting to hire the bikes (bmws) and want a guide for easy negotiation through the borders.
we want to cut costs where we can and dont have a problem sleeping under a tarp rather than hotels (obv cant do that in cities though)
All the tours ive found at the moment are extensive offering 4* hotels etc. but are charging $25,000 (£16,000) we'd prefer to keep it to £5000.

Has anybody done one of these tours or done it independently and if so, how was it and how much did it cost?
did you use your own bike or a rental?

any advice / reccomendations welcome.

cheers

Yam UK just said the reccommended time was 11.5 hours, but didnt say there was a 'book' like you get with car work.

Ive asked a few people i know from other independent garages for quotes, which if more realistic i could use as reference to ask why the yam dealer are charging so much, but obviously they wouldnt be able to do the work.

when i asked southampton why it was so long, they said 'ohhhhhhh, well, there can be problems taking it apart if anything is stuck.....'

well the quote from southampton yamaha was 20 hours labour  :eek

and yamaha UK's only advice was to ask for a written breakdown of the price and labour to justify the extra.

hmmm...

think it came out as £66ph labour (which is bad enough) and the rest was charges for consumables (of which i'd most likely provide myself)

£1700 was the estimate from the dealership that i asked them to work out for my own curiosity, of which 370 needs to come out of my pocket potentially.

this is Crescent Yamaha Bournemouth. I'll maybe give Southampton a call tomorrow.

I usually wouldnt mind stringing it out to get the best price but i need it back on the road.

on a seperate note - does anybody know if they automatically do the shims while they're in there?

oh, yeah obviously 370 is a LOT better than 1700 but its still money that i dont have, i am just interested to know how many hours labour other people have been charged for the same job, to see if its standard or not.

if yamaha are providing 11.5 hours they must have got this figure from somewhere and my dad has done rebuilds in less time.

just a query for peace of mind before i splash out really.

does anybody think its worth getting a quote from another yam dealership?

cheers

Hi guys

so this has happened to me too. the nut and tab washer has come off, allowing my inner sprocket to damage the drive shaft (or something like that)

i went into my local ymaha dealer and after much too-ing and fro-ing they have come back to me saying that because i am still on the original chain and sprocket and theres no proof it has ever been tampered with (which as far as im aware it hasnt, even at 24000 miles) that yamaha will supply all the new parts and 11.5 hours labour out of 'courtesy' (not warrenty - they liked to make this clear)

now the garage is telling me that 11.5 hours is not enough time and they require 16 hours labour for the engine rebuild + consumables, and at dealership prices thats coming out at a £370 bill for me, though they estimated if yamaha didnt contribute it would be £1700!!

I just want to ask how many hours labout it has taken for anyone else to have the rebuild and if they had to part with any of their own cash because of it - to make sure they're not trying to fleece me to get something for themselves out of this.

cheers

Hi, i have a 2003 fazer 6, had it 2 years as a summer commuter.

I took it to castle combe bikesafe day yesterday and it lost all drive after a few laps (it was my first time on a track and i wasnt pushing it very hard)

its currently in the garage waiting for the mechanics to come back after the bank holiday but im pretty sure this sprocket nut is the cause of the problem, it has happened to my dad's fazer 6 (2002) twice! once on a motorway with a lorry up his backside and my mum pillion!!

my bike has got 21k miles on it, i havent changed the chain but i dont know if its original or not.

my dad has told me about an aftermarket kit which has a thicker nut or washer number 90891-10124
if i go into a Yam dealer will they supply it at a subsidised cost since it seems to be a design fault?

thanks v much
