Title: Front caliper upgrade
Post by: the cueball on 04 October 2019, 10:37:07 am
A lot of chat (rightly so) about upgrading the rear caliper of the 600 to the blue dot...

What about the fronts? Is it an easy upgrade from the blue dot to the FZS1000 gold dots??

Just bolt off, bolt on??

I don't have any issues with my blue dots, I think they are fine.. but have the chance of golds at a good price... and well...always good to buy stuff...  :rollin :rollin

Brakes are exactly the same on all the FZS600 from 1998 to 2003

Apart from the colour, what's the difference between the std Blues and these Gold ones?

Surely there can’t be much of an improvement?
If the front calipers are properly maintained and functioning correctly then they are more than enough for these bikes, in fact if you’re not careful and grab a handful of brake you may well experience what flying is like.  :lol

I seem to recall this has been discussed before and the only difference was the colour.

You cannot really upgrade from the blue spots unless you want to spend mega money and even then, the benefits would be smashed out the way by the front forks. Best upgrades on the FZS are braided hoses and thicker fork oil along with some new springs.

From memory, the silver-spot and gold-spot calipers have aluminium pistons in them: as such they're a softer metal and so the pistons are slightly thicker (internally) to compensate.  I believe the thinking behind them is less likely to rust or seize up.  They might also be fractionally lighter, but offer no improvement in braking quality, nor significant proof of improved heat dissipation.

:agree They are less prone to corrosion and pitting compared to the standard Blue Spot.

My only reason for changing them was only because I thought they look better, it was afterwards I discovered there was a difference in the pistons.

Yep it sure has and you can't not really.  These calipers were and still this side of a track the best out there.  Any money spent trying to up grade for performance would be a waste, if you want looks well fill you're boots but it's going to cost you for little or no gain.
