2005 Fazer Thou Ignition Barrel - What else will fit?

My ignition barrel is pretty shot and I've put an wanted topic in For Sale and Wanted.


Are there any other barrels that will fit? I've got R1 forks on my bike. The ignition lock only works when the steering is dead ahead. Does that mean an R1 lock might fit?

 i tried one of these chinese ones from an ebay selller called imighthavewhaturlooking4 it fit but i what have to swop the two connectors over from my old one or try megazip genuine yamaha one think it was 170 quid shipped from japan

Dodsy, thanks for letting me know. Did you buy the switch? Is it still working?


I can get mine to work if I wiggle as I turn. I've made a cover that fits over the switch to protect is from the weather when I park up.

When my lock starts playing up I spray a load of dry lube into the barrel through the attached straw, the liquid cleans out any crud and then evaporates leaving the dry lube in place which makes turning the ignition on much better. I wouldn't use a 'wet' lubricant because this can allow crud to stick to it and cause issues over time.

Can I ask a question please. My 04 Fazer does not have  switch for turning off the lights. They come on when I start the bike and I can turn on high beam. Am I correct to say the ignition barrel I want has two plugs, one with 2 wires and one with 5 wires. Thanks

I've looked at the wiring diagram on this site and the 2003 Fazer 1000 diagram seems to show 2 outputs,  4 wires and 1 wire. Am I right in thinking this would equate to 2 wires and 5 wires with an earth wire in each output?


I was directed to a lockset on eBay. That seems to have two wires and three wires?? The guy said his bike was converted to run on two lights?? It sounds like I need to avoid but I want to know how many wires I need in my replacement ignition barrel. I think 2 plus 5. Am I right?

i would just bite the bullet order a genuine  one from japan end of problem my old one left me stranded no matter how much i played around with the key no joy

This hasn’t gone to plan. I was expecting delivery by 4th April. I checked FedEx website on 5th to see they claim they delivered the switch in 2nd. Clearly not the case both my wife and I were home all day. So I’ve paid £194 for the switch and £42 customs with nothing to show. I’ve contacted both supplier and FedEx but heard nothing back yet. Very frustrating.

Assuming you paid by credit card, file a visa chargeback on the seller with your bank. Make sure to email a copy of all corrispondance shwoing to tried to resolve it to your bank.

I paid by PayPal so I’ll go through them. I think I need to give them a couple of days to respond. I wrote to both parties yesterday.

The switch you suggested turned out to be the wrong one, two plugs with two wires each. I couldn’t get to the bottom of what ‘stuff to turn’ meant and it was an uphill struggle trying to find out if it was any better than mine. I wasted 5 days writing and responding and getting the same replies. I just gave up.

I got a knock on the door last night. My neighbour with a package!  They have has it since Tuesday and FedEx did not advise where they had delivered it or even that they were delivering on what day. A really bad service.

The ignition switch is an OEM unit in Yamaha box. All looks legit. I’d read there were two plugs, one had two wires and one had 5 wires!! The new unit has two plugs, one with two wires and one with three wires. I’ve taken the tank off today to check and it is the correct number of wires.

Just got to arrange fitting now.

Whew, glad that’s all sorted. Very poor from Fed Ex and also your neighbour. Good luck with fitting the replacement.
