LED headlight conversion for FZS600 2001
« on: 07 October 2015, 11:35:15 am »
Hi new to foc ( this is my third time trying to post as my laptop is running me a merry dance  :eek )

I am about to purchase a 2001 fzs 600 2 owner nice example and very standard.  I will be using on a lot of country roads and in low light.  I have seen the comments on other conversations re poor headlamp.

I am thinking of options.

1 is to convert to a bug eye lamp (remove the boxeye(?) fairing and go street triple style) i suppose a streetfighter fzs600 thing.

my other thought was to consider led headlamps.  I have seen the below lamps as a starting point, and should i be able to find a suitable mounting location would be quite tempted, however my concern is the power rating at 125w each.  does anyone have any ideas/thoughts on if this would be suitable or better still a recommendation to assist in any way.

Thanks in advance.

i see no links to any bulbs?

and from my experience led bulbs suck!

ive never seen a 125w led bulb but  have seen claimed 100w leds which are in reality probably 90w, require a lot of cooling and are overkill!

i use 2x 20w led spotlights, a cheap 4w led on  right hand side to keep power consumption down and a hid on the left side and have no problems.

googling 125w led i find this: http://www.lightinthebox.com/hot-new-125w-motorcycle-moto-u5-led-running-driving-light-lamp-headlight_p2454263.html

They are not 125w and never will be, more like 15w, ive seen these in action and theyre more for seeing at a distance in a small area as the light angle is pretty low like 10 degrees you want more like 30 for a wider view and a bit of distance.

the spotlights i use are in this thread:

sorry,

the link is here,

I think your are correct re the claimed output.

Your link took me to your posts, like the beam pattern, certainly improvement.

In theory then I could wire both standard headlamps to come on ( i have the seen the conversion somewhere on here) and then wire spotlights on for main beam.  the trouble living in the countryside is i will be on dipped beam most of the time for oncoming and need the added "firepower" :D  for normal driving

i use mine in the country a lot, ive got the spotlights wired to main beam and an led bulb in place of the original h4 main beam bulb so its only draining 45w or so from the plug.

dip beam is usually crap so osram nightbreaker or hid (nightbreaker is easier) and inside it has a bowl that reflects the light back, peel back the legs holding it and take it out it improves the lighting.

Do the HID conversion. You will be turning night into day with that and wont have any worries about seeing things on a dark country lane anymore.

I did a hid conversion on the left side its bright but im still having issues with it. been through 3 ballasts and 4 different types of bulbs, flicker fix and wired in a capacitor and still flickers and doesn't fully light up to the right colour.

I did both sides on mine. Flicker is down to low voltage which is normally resolved with a thicker cable to power the ballast.

How did you do both sides HID? I'm just waiting on another set of lamps coming then I'm going to experiment, 2 HID H4's is what I'd like to do but need to see what happens.
Have you any pics of your mod?

I did the two H4 HID conversion but my ballasts messed up so i removed them. its easily done but youll have to cut into the rear of your headlights as the left side isnt a H4 i just cut the hole big enough for the H4 bulb and made my own little pin bracket to lock the bulb in place, it worked brilliant until my ballasts started messing up.

How did you wire up the stuff to allow the two dipped to be on then the two main beam to come on with the switch?
Also I'm wondering how you wired up the nearside to get that to work, because at the moment, mine's a standard dipped configuration for that light.
Any info would be great, thanks.

I've got a set of the Cree U5 LED spot lights fitted to the sides of my radiator on some brackets that replace the existing covers.

They aren't that bad really, just bloody annoying that every time you turn the bike on/off they go into one of three modes: full brightness, 50% brightness and flashing. They even switched to flashing while I was on my way to work.

I need to strip the PCB out of it and remove half the gubbins to just have them on full brightness. Just not got round to it yet.

Ok all options being considered. I picked up an h4 xenon plus bulb, recommended by guy in local bike shop. Going to try that and reconfigure main beam so both lights come on initially. I took bike out at night ok Saturday, fortunately I followed wife in car as it was bloody scary when I lost her beam! Talk about candle in the wind!

How did you do both sides HID?

Simples. I got an H1 and H4 kit from hids4u

With the dual headlight mod it means you have both on for dipped
barely needed full beam but when the switch was flicked, one HID stayed low, the other went high.

I get that but I'm curious on the wiring for the H4 as I'm led to believe that you need a power lead for dual element?  I'm thinkingbof going down the route of 2 H4 bulbs so I'll get dual dipped and dual main as I've now got a spare headlamp unit and was going to use that as a donor for my experiment :)

On the right side of the standard FZS600 lights the h4  is there with only 1 element connected. Doing the dual light conversion uses the second filament.

Using the HID4U  kit, it uses the standard build connectors to tell the ballast which "filament" to light up. The new big wire from the battery provides the actual power.

Yes I know that, but if I use my donor unit and take out my nearside H1 reflector and put in the other H4 reflector I can then have twin H4's, that'll be bright enough with HID's I'm sure :)

That's what I thought but wanted to check, cheers.

Reading this interesting thread. Also I learned elsewhere on these boards that LED or HID bulbs are now a mandatory MOT failure.
Very strange that the DOT would legislate to keep shitty vehicle lighting shitty.

Not sure what to do.

Dual lamp mod and Osram HID bulbs, removed for MOT I guess.  Cant fit spots as I have a full fairing.

LED and HID were a mandatory failure but that changed earlier this year to only fail if the beam pattern is an issue.

Dual lamp mod is fine for the MOT too as long as you set the aim correctly.

If you really want spots, you could fir them under the nose cone as long as they are not too big.

Thanks a load BB.
I dont "want" spots, I just want a bit of visibility in the dark. The boxeye headlamps are like toy lights on a pedal car. I often run home down the A38 from Nottingham after gigs, and there are few streetlamps. Really cant imagine daring that on my fazer without serious headlamp improvements.

I'll try the basic stuff first.
