Check plug cap resistances, had similar on my foxeye 600 but not the whole engine dying, dropped a cylinder under hard acceleration (for a 600 :-) turned out to be a weak spark due to high plug cap resistance, ran ok otherwise.

Had my carbs off last week and noticed the same, there was nothing connected to the bit of plastic on mine, I did wonder for a while after but the bike is running fine, the manual doesn't mention it either.

Also had this, tried every damn thing to get the bugger out, couldn't drill as no bits long enough and it was no. 3 cylinder, inside bolt, ended up cutting down the replacement bolt I got off ebay and welding it onto the old stud, I then had to drill out the collet hole to allow for the weld, bunged a washer on and the nut, sorted and had no problems since, the hardest part was finding someone willing to weld the bolt on.

I wonder if that place in London used a different set of carbs then and got round the TPS, or was it an original set up? hmmmmm could be a challenge :-D

Has anyone bunged on individual k&n air filters to the carbs, junking the original air box etc and re-jetted? Does this increase throttle response and power? Is it even worth it on a 95bhp bike? It's been suggested it's not worth stressing a perfectly good engine. Any thoughts?

« on: 20 April 2014, 10:26:22 pm »
Never had bungs on but had some bars on mine, did a total strip down and rebuild a year back and left them off for cosmetic reasons, they really stuck out, a lot, I mean, way out! Guess it's a personal preference for cosmetic reasons, if you stuff it down the road, you're going to do a lot of damage anyway, esp to the fairing area, the bungs/bars will at least protect the engine casings.

£20 sorted it, but, as mentioned in another comment on here, well worth going over the whole lot, best service in years :-)

Tried my last option, plug caps, from the checks, one was high resistance anyway, so thought it might be an idea for a new set, originals at £50 a go ish and none on ebay got me looking about, saw that the old Honda CX500 caps are a good replacement and available from M&P, as M&P are 20 min away, off I want, they had 1 in stock, buggerit, the very nice staff dug out a NGK book and suggested these...

http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/505041/Spares/Spark-Plugs-and-Caps/NGK

Not impressed with the colour as I've resprayed my bike black (keeping the decals etc) and a few blue bolts for the screen, but red? Anyway, who am I to be fussy, I want a bike that runs, these do the trick, the screw for the HT lead is deep inside but the HT leads are long enough, they are totally waterproof, so I kept the original caps for the lead end anyway and pushed them onto the ends, perfect fit and not taking any chances with water....

One ride later

Big cheesy grin :-D

Happy Easter everyone :-)

I', 6'3 and had this issue, changed the standard screen for a DB one and all it did was move the wind flow from hitting my chest/neck to right in the middle of my lid, stuck with it though as I can slouch lower and into the dead air better :-) I have seen the air deflectors that go on top of the screen, an adjustable blade that you can move to suit your own height etc but at £100 a go......

Plug cap resistances, book says 10k, I've got 3 caps at 8k and one at 14k

Coil secondary resistance at 14k, book says 12k to 18k, so ok there, primary by the book is 1.87 ohms to 2.53 ohms and I've got 6.5 ohms per coil, so matched but way out.

Checked the plugs, all looking as they should, and the gaps were all at 0.8mm, book says 0.6 to 0.8 so closed the gap to 0.7

Another run after all checks and still the same.

Nope, wasn't that, ran fine but slightly less responsive due to gravity feed I guess, warmed up then crack open the throttle, back to the juddering.........

Carbs clean, air filter clean and seated properly, carb rubbers fine, fuel pump appears fine, all pipes not kinked.........

Back after a week away on holiday, saw loads of bikes, grrrrr :-)

Anyway, just about to bypass the fuel pump so I have direct gravity feed to the carbs, if it runs fine, then it's the pump, not touching anything else yet, the next to look at will be the plugs, I know they are only 2k old but got to be worth a look, as I'm on hols, I grabbed my multimeter from work, my own, not works and will check the plug cap restistances, 13 year old bike now, original plug caps, hmmmmm, the air filter is spotless and seated properly, will post the results of the test blast/fart later :-)

FZS600 / Re: Lost your front sprocket and washer???
« on: 11 April 2014, 10:39:01 pm »
Had this happen to me while on holiday in France in 2011, on my 02 FZS600, was heading home, still some 200 miles away from Calais, doing a nice 110 on a country road, like you can out there and suddenly, a clonk, something hit my foot and I lost all drive, pulled over, as did all the other bikers with me, whipped off the front sprocket cover, and my sprocket nut and washer had done one and are both still by the side of a road or in a field in France, did look but didn't find. Really glad the chain didn't lock up!!!! A friendly local bike shop sorted me out the next day after picking the bike up, a nice friendly local (bandit rider :-/) let me leave the bike at his over night, the bike shop fitted another nut and washer, old thickness, and charged me £40 for the whole thing, picking the bike up from 20 miles away and fitting the washer etc, bargain, got home and promptly went back to the Yamaha dealer I bough the bike from, who told me they had never heard of the problem or of any free fixes but only charged me £2 for a new style nut and washer, ordered in especially. I now keep a close eye on it, even though it's the new nut.

Checked all the carb inlet rubbers when I had the carbs off, all nice and clean and in good nick, no splits, the whole airbox is as new, a friend suggested kinked breather pipes but I know the issue isn't there, as the carbs are now spotless, inside and out, I'm ruling them out for now, though they do need a balance after my tinkering, I wonder if just a carb balance would sort the issue out, will see. I am wondering about plug caps, got to fire it up in the dark to check for arcing, the plugs are fine, 2k miles old but could be worth a check anyway, the battery is new and charges just fine. Will keep at it :-)

Laser temp gun on ebay for £10, got one myself for remote temp checks, well worth grabbing one :-)

Liking the IPA idea :-) After 10 of them, I won't care :-D

Bunged the carbs back on tonight, was a bugger of a job to get the air filter housing and tubes back onto the carbs, that took the longest, sadly though, was still the same, so, clean as a whistle carbs and not the carbs, maybe.

On one note, any revs above 5k seems to blast through the stuttering, blow 5k and it's tractor time, above 5, it stutters then takes off, change gear and no problem as the revs are high, but then, at those revs and speeds, you don't snap the throttle open anyway, so still stumped. Going to check the caps next me thinks and look at some IPA :-D

Thanks for the welcome and response :-) Tried fuel additives to stop carb icing, non worked really :-( I did know about the heating system for the carbs and wondering if the small pipes from the coolant system were blocked, I now know they are not as I've got the carbs off the bike, so no problems there, in response to ChristoT, I agree that smooth throttle works wonders but when you need to drop a cog and overtake a car or 3, the last thing you expect is for the bike to not go anywhere, not speed up, nothing, just judder and sound worse than Worzel Gummages tractor, not good really, so def a fault somewhere. Also had the bike almost 4 years and it's not restricted :-D Darssi, got the standard air filter in, it's clean too, as for plug caps, that is one for me to check y82ugp, was suggested I find somewhere really dark, easy here, and see if I have any arcing over, once the carbs are back on, that is one to try. I did chop off 1cm of the leads to the caps, it is a 13 year old bike and on original caps etc, made no difference but was worth a go. Arfa, I do have a multi meter, the coils are one thing I will need to look at. The local bike shop suggested fuel pump, any thoughts on this?

Got a problem with the bike, 2002 FZS, been great but had some misfire issues last winter, would start ok then would drop to 3 or even 2 cylinders after a few miles, always when under 5 Deg C or so, could get the other cylinders to fire if I revved it up or ride for 10 miles and they would kick in like a turbo!!! However..... maybe related.......

Now, as in April, if I ride easy on the throttle, no problem, she goes as a Fazer can, if I snap open the throttle, it's like hitting a rev limiter and the bike judders as though I'm not on all 4 cylinders, doesn't matter what gear I'm in and always under load, (In neutral and at a standstill, I can't replicate it) If I roll off the throttle and slow back on, the bike runs fine.

The plug were new 2k miles ago, 36k on the bike, stripped the barbs down and the diaphrams are clean, no perishing, the float bowls are clean, no gunk though had some crap under the diaphrams.

Any idea's as I'm all out.

Introduction / Hi all
« on: 08 April 2014, 09:54:43 pm »
Hi all, new on here though I have read the forum stuff without joining. On second FZS 600, had a 2003 model from new and now on a 2002 model that I've now had for nearly 4 years and loving every second of it. Got some issues with the Fazer, who hasn't, looking to see who can help and if I can help with my experience with anyone else's problems.
