No, it's a conventional thread.
I always use an old wood chisel (or an old screwdriver that's been sharpened), just position the blade on the rim of the filter aiming at an angle so that tapping with a hammer partly makes it dig in to the metal slightly and partly forces it round in the desired direction.

I'm with Fazerrider on this one, sharp screwdriver or chisel on the rim near the engine, few gentle taps in the right direction and it should come off.

I had this problem once, only ever use K&N filters now with a nut welded on the end for easy removal with a socket and extension bar.

When you eventually get the filter off, smear a bit of oil on the rubber seal of the new one and just nip it up, you don't need to ever go mad with it.
If it ever does drip, do it up a tad tighter, but it doesn't need tightening up a lot at all.

A smear of oil, then tighten by hand is all it needs. I've got several tools to remove oil filters but never need em on a filter that i've personally fitted. A handy tip is to loosen the filter when the engines cold so you don't burn yourself on the exhausts. Once you get it loose, re-tighten gently and then warm the engine before draining the oil and removing the filter.
