Just been to halfords and they are selling magnatec oil for £17.99 has anybody used car oil in there fazer or any other bike and does it make a difference from using bike specific oil?
-
wouldn`t recommend it. car oil have additives which play havoc at times with wet bike clutches. if your lucky you may get away with bad clutch slip. fully sythetic tends to be the worst culprit. stick with proper bike lubricants. will save you a lot of headaches and dosh. you aint saving anything trust me ;)
-
Don't use "Magnatec" ... it has molybdenum sulphide in it and that may well bugger up your clutch. That's what Mr Yamaha means when he says "Avoid oils woith friction reducing additives"
Having said that, several on here have used Magnatec or fully synthetic with no reported problems.
Any standard car oil that meets the SE, SF or SG spec or has a grade "CD" or higher will do fine: (ie NOT "Car-lube's" cheapest offering).
Asda or Tesco semi-synth are both cheap and good.
If you like your oil to be "reassuringly expensive" then use something with a picture of a motorbike on the label.
Bike oil is simply car-oil with added marketing by suits that sponsor bike-racing. I have yet to see any evidence otherwise.

I remember on the old site someone has always used car engine oil and says the same thing.
Makes you wonder.
-
choice is yours.............its your wallet !! :rolleyes
-
its your choice......its your wallet, but only bike graded oil goes in my customers bikes !! :rolleyes

its your choice......its your wallet
It certainly is ... and I choose to use oil from people who tell me what's in their product.
If they sell it in the USA, the dead give-away is the MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheet) . Look under "Clean Water act"
That's the only place that they're FORCED to tell you what's in it and its the same as any modern car oil.
Zinc Salts (that's Zink di-alkyl phosphate, which is in all modern car oils) and some phosphoric acid derivative (detergent).
-
ive used halfords motorcycle oil for years...not expensive and no problems :)

Carlube 10w40 mineral is SL and CF. No problem there then.

I'm having deja vu. Hasn't this subject come up before? :lol
-
Think i will stick with me motul.
Just thought i would enquire about car oil.. ;)
-
wemoto sell rock oil semi synthetic at around £6.50 a litre or synthesis4 at about £12.00 a litre. ive used synthesis 4 since the early 90s in all my despatch bikes and toys.expensive but worth the extra for me.
-
Been using Asda 10 / 40 for the last 15k miles - changed every 2k miles and oil filter every other change - change the clutch springs recently - looks brand new inside @ 37k miles now!
EDIT: Its £16 for 5L too!!

i dont wanna fight this one too hard!!! cos everyone has their own thoughts.................
however..................for FZS600 prior to 2002 Mr Yamaha states DO NOT USE "CD" OR ABOVE!!!!
this includes all cheap oils since 2007!!!!..........
i love my Fazer!!!....... im not gonna deny it an extra £10???

Car oils marked 0w or 5w will have friction modifiers and should not be used.
10w car oil will be fine.
I have used Comma eurolite in all my bikes, but I have to keep a barrel of bike specific stuff in the garage, as I do work on other peoples bikes and they can be a bit fussy. Still it's their money.
-
Bought my fazer new in Easter 2001
I've run it on fully synthetic all its life (usually get it from Asda or Tesco).
Bikes done 77,000 miles and I've never experienced any clutch slip problems.
-
Please don't confuse 0w and 5w oils with fully synth.
10w fully synth car or bike oil will be fine in your engine. Although you could save yourself money on oil and spend it on gas. :D
-
These bikes are meant to be run on 10w/40 semi synthetic motorbike oil , that's the manual recommended oil anyway.
Brand isn't too much of an issue as long as it's changed at regular intervals, anywhere between 4000-6000 miles, the choice is yours.
This is an old post resurrected, but i do remember using Magnatec before, years ago, i'm not sure if it was in the Fazer or not, but the bike did not like it at all.
I can't remember what the actual issue was but it only lasted about a week in the bike, then when i done a bit of research it does actually say not suitable for motorbikes.

Don't use car oil. The make up is focused on car operating characteristics, rather than bike. Upto u, you bike, Your money. But think first !!

I use the silkolene 10w40 semi synthetic bike specific oil , just paid £27 for 4l from fowlers , I change the oil once a year and do 4000 miles annually .
-
Because bikes are now marketed as toys for those with disposable income rather than as a cheap mode of transport for the masses, the marketing people at the oil companies know that these modern bike owners are prepared to pay a premium for oil rebadged as being specifically for bikes. If you're happy paying thirty odd quid for your oil, then fine, whatever makes you feel good. I will continue using car oil in my 160bhp ZRX and in all my other bikes.
As I said earlier I have to keep a barrel of bike specific oils for people whose bikes I work on who won't be persuaded that they are being conned. I paid fifty quid for 25l of Elf oil. Funny thing is these people who insist on having the bike specific oil also insist on paying a premium for it, so that barrel will be used up at thirty quid for each four litre refill. If I charged them any less they wouldn't be happy.
-
I'll continue letting this be bumped.
I normally use 10/40w Castrol GTX in my bike (good semi synth car oil), didn't have any laying around this time, so put in Halfrauds 10/40w semi synth. No problems yet, also 'car' oil.

There exists some contested argument both lines....Read up on bike wet clutches and contaminant due to wear, read up on car dry clutches, read up slip agents, on friction and viscosity, engine materials and stress/fatigue
You'll actually find market forces at work rather than you sinister perception perhaps... The oil companies respond to demand, if all the 'modern bike owners' you refer to did not demand it, then we would all be sticking car oil in our engines... But we don't... Because we're not conned by proper riders who spend grands on a ZRX THEN scrimp on a few quid in proper oil.
Who cares..Carry on mate... You do what feels best for ya,
In fact let me help you...ALDI have an offer on, 5ltr car oil for £4.99 .... Hurry , but if you are going to ignore the labels on oil ... run your ZXR on their veg oil, a mouth watering 99p. :rollin
To show I'm only taking the piss a little... Here is something from the respected MCN you will enjoy...

That would be ZRX not ZXR mate. :rolleyes
Think i would trust pal as he does a lot of engine work on the zrx forum of which i am a member as i also have a zrx1200r,he can strip your engine and make your bike give you a big smile. :D
-
Great. Good luck and enjoy the ride then ;) if youre using magnatec then you too can become an expert engine stripper and put smiles on faces :lol

It's the subject title that's probably why people are thinking that.
But as i said earlier, i have actually used Magnatec myself in one of my bikes, and can personally say it did not like it at all and i would never use it again.
