FZS600 Fazer / poor idle and TPS
« on: 02 September 2014, 08:27:07 pm »
I thought my bike was idling ok until I saw some vids on youtube of FZS600 yr 2000 (same as mine) with the RPM needle stuck on 1250 (or thereabouts but the key was the needle was stuck fast like a fuel injection system), not even twitching. Mine twitches probably between 1150 and 1350. Exact variations are not easy without a separate tacho as the gauge markers are so close; Anyway I've balanced the carbs with a Morgan Pro and there was no apparent vacuum leaks and the carbs were all balanced fine; the valve clearances were checked recently by me and were in tolerance and bang on; the bike has done 17K miles. New plugs and gaps checked + New air filter + new fuel filter all fitted last week.

TPS shows 5K when disconnected/reconnected but I was wondering if there is a slight adjustment that can be made and it would still read 5K but improve idle; for example, could it be turned a few degrees and still read 5K but improve idle; im not that good with electrics so dont want to attempt this without posting here first.

thanks.

FZS600 Fazer / what to look out for on a 4 yr garaged fzs
« on: 01 September 2014, 09:41:36 pm »
going to my pal's tomorrow to look at his fazer 600 which belonged to his deceased Dad. My pal now wants to sell the bike but it wont start. I've tested the battery and its dead so ordered a new battery. What can I expect in terms of starting/turnover problems?? All I know is that it has been garaged and not fired up for 4 years and has about 1 litre of petrol in the tank by the sounds of it - I'm told the petrol has been in there for the same amount of time.

FZS600 Fazer / recommend polishing kit for steel and alloys
« on: 31 August 2014, 10:44:56 pm »
Can someone please provide a link to a kit they have actually used, to clean and polish all its alloys and steel, on mi bike...levers,links,pegs etc

Thinking of a dremel or is this too small? would I be better off using a normal drill polish kit. Could I even get away without tool based cleaning and use some fan dangy super good cleaning fluids / compounds and rags/cloths

The steel is dark and black pits and blemishes. In some cases slightly rusty

The alloy is clean but dull with white marks/pitting/blemishes

i have looked on you tube and Google and different people swear by their methods but I could not find an article, on bikes, specific to cleaning and polishing old steel and alloy using products I can buy locally or easily (eBay uk)

Please could you impart your own experience as to what has worked for you

FZS600 Fazer / Paint spraycan colour match please
« on: 30 August 2014, 09:39:05 pm »
Does anyone have a clue as to what spraycan make/colour/code I can use for the factory black used to paint  the engine and alternator/clutch/sprocket covers etc. on 2000 FZS 600 - in other words, the best black colour match (satin/gloss - I'm not sure its matte but could be wrong) - ideally I'm looking for a simple solution such as Halfords, B&Q, or a brand name I can get in a motorfactors.

FZS600 Fazer / Bar riser recommendations please
« on: 29 August 2014, 08:57:38 pm »
I'm only 170cm and short arms, I would like some risers to make things a bit more comfortable..

Seen these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CNC-30mm-BAR-RAISERS-RISERS-FOR-Yamaha-MT-03-FZS-600-1000-FZ1-FZ6-Fazer-XJ6-XJ9-/181457149320?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2a3fb05d88

But look a bit cheap and not fitting true and tight (in the images at least)

Can anyone recommend something they have actually used and find good quality

Your Suggestions and How you can help / Knowledge base forum
« on: 28 August 2014, 10:03:01 pm »
Why not have a section 'knowledge base' assign a mod to it, use it for sub forums:
FAQ
HotPoop
articles
101 and HOWTO

consolidate information sources from across the site into the above sub forums. Many of us-muskeg included- use a tab/smartphone and having this info in a forum structure simplifies things and extends s logical structure around the data warehouse on here

FZS600 Fazer / scottoiler
« on: 27 August 2014, 08:31:27 pm »
If you search for yam fzs 600 here .. http://www.scottoiler.com/us/installation-guides.html
They show a image of a well pulled yet rusty chain
Thinking of getting the tutoro auto but I guess they don't oil the outside of links either and thus do we get rusted chains. I currently use lube that lasts for a hundred miles ... maybe more ... or so before it vanishes (gold so you can see when it's gone) and my chains are always well lubed out and in. ?? What views have we this foccers?

FZS600 Fazer / Fork oil 15w
« on: 27 August 2014, 04:55:25 pm »
Going to replace stock 5w with 15w in the forks... Found some guides

DIY How to Replace Motorcycle Fork Oil Yamaha FZ6…: http://youtu.be/zll8jjdi9XA
How to change fork seals in traditional (right wa…: http://youtu.be/0TCYIEcDcts
And a link  on focuk that doesn't have the pics

Looking for some ideas tips but the above either miss out tips n hints, or the methods differ slightly,  or the images are missing...
Tips like how to get the rod out, get right oil level, order of bolt removal....

Does anyone have a link to a 101 for a fzs

Rather bemusing... For fork oil change, The Haynes manual says refer to chapter 1, chapter 1 says refer to chapter 6. But I guess you just miss out some (unknown) steps although I have had bad experiences with Haynes as the odd thing gets left out or wrong order

Oh,and what will 15w give me over 5w. My commute is through B roads and country lanes, if that matters. My firms don't bottom out and roads are very uneven and potty and scarred tarmac, so, should I sick with 5w. The fork oil hasn't been changed in 17k according to previous owner

Cheers

FZS600 Fazer / 530XV chain spec / rivet diameter
« on: 25 August 2014, 11:38:33 pm »
Found this the other day and used it when fitting my "DID 530VXHeavy Duty" chain...

but the rivet size diameter on any of the chain pin rivets is around 5.7mm so I've riveted mine at 5.8mm , but the chart suggests the pins are 5.24 in diameter; so I just wondering whether the extra 0.56mm is sufficient to keep this chain together !! I'm using a vernier calliper with three decimal place resolution so quite accurate.

FZS600 Fazer / rear wheel and chain adjustment query
« on: 24 August 2014, 04:47:10 pm »
No matter what I do , and how I do it, with  the calliper torque bar loosened and the rear axle nut just biting , and adjustment of each of the chain adjustment nuts - I cannot get the rear wheel markers to align. Everything lines up on each side of the swingarm but after  I torque up the axle nut, the l/h marker is just before the 3rd major mark (mark cannot be seen) and the r/h is just after the 3rd mark (mark can be seen). I' say there is about 2mm difference between the two

Tried 5 times , and yes the adjuster nuts are torqed up as it calliper nut, before I torque up the axle nut.

Is this slight discrepancy  ok or do the adjuster marks need to be bang on each side - mm perfect.
