FZS600 Fazer / Re: lowering kit
« on: 18 December 2012, 11:13:42 am »
I picked up a lowered seat froma chap on this forum. Basically just a standard seat, with the covering peeled back, foam trimmed down, then covering restapled down. Went this route, as I wanted to share the bike with my wife, whose quite a bit shorter than me (only 5'1 3/4"). The seat is a quick swap, and knocks about an inch or two off the height. Why don't you just get a spare seat off ebay and customise it yourself.

Well, about a month ago, you should have cleaned the bike right down, with cold water (hot water aids the rust process), and then doused the bike completely in ACF50, covering everything metal (but avoiding brake pads/discs/tyres). This creates a barrier film that halts any existing corrosion and prevents any fresh.

You can get cans of ACF50 on ebay cheap (~£15) or there are places you can go that'll load up a pressure jet with the stuff and really cover your bike and get it in  all the  nooks and crannies.

Check out ebay.it. Managed to get a brand new Givi one (340F) and monokey plate (M3) for £65 delivered. Loads of shops on there stocking it, some will post to UK, others won't, just send them all messages. Mine was from an ebay shop called 'Motopui'. Most of them speak enough English, so no worries there. And don't worry about duty/vat, being in the EU there's no hidden costs. Either way, it beats many of the crazy prices they go for second hand on ebay over here. When I was looking, most ended early before I could even bid, guessing someone just offered them cash up front. Plus buying new, there's no worries about all the bolts and stuff being included.

Otherwise, just order the bars (340F) from Italy, then source the M3 plate locally, as this is pretty common and fits many different bikes. Just make sure it comes with the silver metal brackets to fasten it to top of bars. I then picked up a second hand box local off ebay uk. Got an old E50 Maxia one for £57 quid.

Yep, all solid. Picked up a top box from chap off ebay last night and took it to work today all laoded up.  All fine, no problems.

Dunno why, but I'm now really struggling to get the bike up on centre stand. Dunno if the little extra weight of top box on back is causing it, but really struggled this morning, with all my weight on stand lever! Never had trouble getting it on stand with same luggage in panniers on back... Weird!

All sorted. :)

Though I can't get one of the plastic half screw clips back in, as the rack is now in the way. The other one was missing!

When bolting the M3 plate to the arms, I had to squeeze the arms together a bit, they were a little too far apart to match the holes on the rack. Bit tricky really. Is this normal? Have I fitted it right?!

I don't yet have a Haynes manual for the bike, and still quite new to it, so I've not pulled it apart yet. Any pointers to removing the rear body to fit Givi rack? Need to tackle this tonight to pick up a top box tomorrow!

I see two bolts under seat and two underneath, plus the four in the grab handle. Any others? Anything else need removing to gain access etc?

Can definitely recommend heated gloves. Just picked up a nice pair of Gerbing's in a recent VisorDown power buy at £100!

Cabling is a bit of a faff, threading it through your coat, plugging them in etc. But damned the're nice. Lovely and warm. Other night I had to go half way round North Circular and out into Essex, around 10/11pm and it was just a couple of degrees above freezing, loads of wind chill. Hands were lovely and warm. Was an enjoyable ride, rather than a grit your teeth get home fast affair. :)

Did get a spot of cool ness coming through if I clenched my fingers around the grips (rather than more forward over levers), but the heating elements compensated fine. Guess more surface area for wind to chill. But it was great, to get home and not have to lock and cover bike up with numb fingers...

Arfa, wouldn't it be easier to route it to the front, plugging unplugging near the crotch / left-thigh area?

To route the cable across my front would be a pain when taking jacket off - unzip, then pull cable out of way/over head. I'd be threading the cable down my right arm everytime I put the jacket on. :(

I was thinking by routing around my back, I can leave the cabling in place in my jacket, thus just stick arms in, zip up, plugs gloves in, then plug control box in. However, going round back, the cable from my right hand to control box near left thigh is only just long enough. The weight of the control box often tugs the right hand cable up my sleeve (when glove not plugged in) and the control box falls to the middle of my back. I guess if I tack it all in (safety pins etc) it should be fine.

The same restriction has been in place in Switzerland for a few years too.

Look up a little app called: POIWarner. Its a wee 3rd party app, that can run on most stanavs, alongside the existing nav software. It was it's own DB of speed cams, which you update via a subscription to someone like navigating.de or POIhandler.com. This will be an EU wide DB of cameras. Te app, just shares the GPS device on the satnav and pops up its own overlay box with speed cam warnings etc. Best bit though, is the POI warner app, has a 'panic' button which you can press, which will cause it to wipe itself and the POI database off the sat nav. Cunning.

Mine turned up Saturday too. Used Nikwax to waterproof them. Goes easy on the palms though, found it made them a bit slippy on the grips...

How are you all routing the cables? Threaded mine in jacket between zip in liner and outside, but still finding it a spot awkward, unless the box comes out the bottom, dead centre of my back... It's definitely fiddly getting the gloves on and plugging them in, but they were lovely and toasty on ride in this morning and that was only on orange.

Also, what's with the funny pocket under the knuckle protectors?!

Totally shit. I went with the RAC for insurance this time (best price...), glad I didn't opt for their recovery when they tried the up sell. I guess its tough to know who to go with as they all farm some of their recovery to 3rd parties...

Doh! Bad luck mate. Dropped mine the other week in almost as daft a fashion. Although it was wet and some tosser was about to pull out on me... Live and learn.

Looks like them crash bars did their job anyway. At least you've got no faring to scuff/crack.

« on: 22 October 2012, 12:08:32 pm »
Latest Ride magazine has an article about winter-proofing. Not sure if it's the bike or the rider though. Will post later when I've read it

Covers both. Actually quite a useful read. Also got some handy tips on riding in wet too (e.g. leaning your body rather than the bike when cornering).

Acf 50 treatment

when i bought my bike ,the engine had been treated with acf 50 ,but after riding it for 5 mins the smell put me off using the acf 50
does anyone else find this ?

Have heard other stories of this and big clouds of smoke etc. However, I had nothing of the sort when I recently sprayed down mine. Dunno if its down to how soon afterwards you get on the thing or not. I did mine on a Saturday, then didn't take it out until the Monday. YMMV.

Another tip I was told, was give the bike a regular clean, to wash off crud and salt, but importantly, use cold water. Apparently hot water can increase the rust process. And don't use a pressure washer, it just forces water into places where it won't dry.

General / Re: Keeping Visor Clear in Rain
« on: 19 October 2012, 11:51:16 am »
I've been using Raincoat, yet another brand of water repellent! Seems to do the job, so long as you going at a reasonable speed 30-40mph +  Anything less and the water doesn't get blown off. Similarly, it doesn't help i f it not really raining much, but road is wet and there's a lot of spray from other cars etc.  Needs recoating quite often (ever week or so), but each sachet in the box has enough for about 3-4 applications.

Think they usually come round every couple of weeks or so. I like the idea of heated gloves, just not sure about faff plugging them in.
