Engine paint
« on: 10 March 2013, 07:26:42 pm »
My engine is looking quite tatty after winter, especially around the fins. Was thinking of respraying them when the weather's a bit better - can anybody recommend a paint that's a good colour match?

I was looking at this:

I was only going to paint around the fins. Was the hammerite a good match to the original paint? Thanks

I would say it's more gloss black than satin so would recommend this, on fins only your get a better coating & possibly less mess. :)

is available in satin if you prefer.

Done mine the other day, mind you engine was missing paint left right and centre and while I was at it, removed the fairings and sanded down any rust from frame under rear fairing( last owner didn't look after it at all :\ )
Sprayed all with gloss black, cleaned off fins straight away and used some metal polish on the fins, looks very clean now, not perfect and bit more glossy than original, but I like it!

But for a bike that had 124,500 miles on the old engine it's not looking too shabby now!!

I just used that Plasticote Gloss black. Work well, has a good finish and stays on well despite the heat. I don't bother with the fins. I don't like them polished and prefer to paint them too.

You can use heated paint that you get in the DIY for barbeques too. Good finish and lasts for ever, so be careful. If you plan on spraying pipes to black, or get some overspray on your shiney pipes, make sure you deal with it instantly. Once that shit goes on for a few hours, there is no getting it off....not even with paint stripper. Trust me, it clings that good.

Thanks folks, will get some gloss paint then and wait for some decent weather. Why is it snowing & what the hell is spring doing?
