General / Wide bars = comfort?
« on: 21 October 2013, 05:25:47 pm »
I get pain in my shoulder blades and left wrist when I am riding either of my bikes for any length of time. Especially on the motorway. The same goes for almost every other bike I have ridden too. Except for my mates supermoto, which has silly wide bars. So I conducted a little experiment to see what my natural stance is when I hold "air" handlebars. Measuring from the outside of one hand to the other is 840mm. I have had a look online and found some bars that are exactly 840mm. Has anyone out there changed their bars for the same reason, and if so, how successful was it?

General / Clutch change question
« on: 13 October 2013, 04:35:55 pm »
F.A.O Moderator - please leave this here for a couple of days so I can get feedback from ex FZS 600 owners.

Hi Guys,

I changed my clutch plates and springs to EBC heavy duty stuff. I also changed the chain and sprockets and broke the gear selector rod whilst doing so, therefore I had to change that too. When I built the clutch back up, I did it one piece at a time, so I know that side is ok.

So, today I assembled it all and when I pull the clutch lever - nothing happens. It is flaccid. I was wondering if I need to change the clutch cable to? It is probably the original one, so about 32K old. Will this solve my problem, or have I made an error somewhere else?

Any help appreciated

FZS600 Fazer / Sorry, front sprocket nut again.
« on: 10 October 2013, 01:55:48 pm »
I went to my local Yamaha dealer today (Ride on Glasgow) to get the front sprocket nut and washer. I have read on here that people seem to have paid around £2.50 for both. Ride on wanted £9! Is this right? I though it was a recall.

General / Snow... Already!
« on: 07 October 2013, 12:28:49 pm »
I was just on the beeb weather site planning which of my two days off is best to go for a run. Tuesday or Wednesday. So I have a look at my usual places en route to check the general weather and found this -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2635277

Heavy snow shower and minus conditions on Wednesday  :'( . Its 17 and sunny in Glasgow today. How can this be, Tyndrum is only an hour up the road. You foccers south of the boarder have no idea what we have to endure up here, so enjoy it  ;) .

Looks like I'll have to dig out the winter clobber then.

General / Euro Tour and the Nurburgring
« on: 24 September 2013, 11:55:46 am »
Well, I got back a couple of days ago from my mini Euro tour and Nurburgring experience and for the most part it was good. The accommodation was cheap and quality, the food was good and the bike returned 62 MPG over 1600 miles, including 4 laps and a FULL tank at the ring!

Being quite late in the season, the weather was a mix bag of tricks. We had some sunshine (on the day of the nordschleife :D  ) and some rain (the day we were meant to go to Europa park  :rolleyes ) and everything in between.

The scottoiler I bought made NO difference to my need to adjust the chain and sprockets every 600 miles or so. It turns out that it is a racing set up that came on the bike BEFORE I bought it, and it needs constant maintenance. I wont need to worry about that any more as it died at the ring, along with my clutch. Yip, my clutch died before I reached the karussell on lap one. Only 3 1/2 laps  of the ring and 6 countries to ride through before I'm home safe.

On the plus side, I did manage to record a full lap of the ring. I will not be putting it on youtube as there seems to be a lot of pressure over there for having the nordschleife closed down. All these internet films do it give the health and safety mob ammo, and I for one will not be a part of that. I did manage a time of around 12 minutes. Not the best, but for my first visit and a focced clutch on an old 600 with a luggage rack, I'm happy enough.

I also managed to come home with over 200 euro, so that has went straight into the Nurburgring jar for next year. I definitely have the bug.

The roads around Nurburg, the Rhein and Mozel are beautiful. The city's of Bonn and Koblenz are well worth a visit too. Brussels I though was a dump and Amsterdam is Amsterdam, love it or hate it (I love it).

We did a mix of motorway and twisties. Around 60/40 in favour of the twisties. I think it might have been more fun stuff if my bike was ok.

The total cost for the trip, excluding any kit required, was around £950 - £1000 for 10 days incl. a ferry crossing. That also included a 50 euro gift for my better half. It could have been done cheaper if necessary, but I enjoy my food and beer and count the cost on my return, not on my holiday.

The bike was great, apart from the afore mentioned items going. The clutch is 13 y/o and 32000 miles in, so I am ok with that. And the chain and sprockets were on the bike when I got it 2 years ago, so 8000 miles of fun and a tour with the ring thrown in for good measure, I am also ok with. It was comfy enough for 500+km days and the touring screen helped with the wind fatigue and the viper seat with the bum. The Maxxis tyres were up to the job and got shredded at the ring. No chooky strips on the right and hardly anything to mention at the left :D .

All in all, a fantastic experience that will be repeated in one way or another.

I managed to kill mine dead at the Nurburgring last week (first lap) and had to nurse the bike all the way back to Glasgow. That was fun  :'( . I have priced an EBC clutch and it will cost around £85 for a heavy duty kit, including cable and delivery. So a used unit will have to be considerably less for it to be worth my while.

Chain and sprockets have to be new. I would prefer to change the gearing down, but if the price is right I will go standard.

Thanks guys

General / Garage Upgrade/Repairs...
« on: 03 September 2013, 08:59:48 pm »
Hi Guys,

I am thinking of giving my garage a bit of a fix up before the winter sets in. It developed a crack in the floor a few years back when the temperatures hit -10c and some, which has caused c separation in one of the breeze-block walls. I was thinking of making a reinforced mesh that would basically make up a steel belt going round the garage. I have seen this being done on tenement buildings in Glasgow my whole life and am hoping this will keep it in place.

I have decided to paint the walls and the floor too. It is a normal sized garage (takes a average car and 2 bikes, with tools and other garage related stuff). I was wondering if any of you have painted your garage and hoe porous were the walls and floor?

I am also thinking about insulating the ceiling. The building is watertight, but it gets cold and damp in deepest winter. Its so cold in there that we use it as a fridge for drinks (true story  :lol ). I don't know if the insulation would make any difference?

To finish it off, I will fit some strip lighting I already have and voilà.

Any pointers from folks that have attempted or successfully completed such a task would be welcome.

Cheers

General / Ready for touring
« on: 26 August 2013, 07:48:14 pm »
As some of you know... Nurburgring... bla bla bla. Anyway, I had some work to do to the bike before I go, and some things I did not have to do,but did anyway  :D .

I had posted about a broken exhaust clamp a few weeks ago. I decided to get it welded, which meant taking the system off the bike. 2 studs broke (not bad considering the nick of them). So I then had to get the broken studs out, which involved removing the radiator and fan, so I did a full flush with that too. Removed all of the radiator hoses and gave them some rubber treatment whilst I was at it. I then got the studs out (after a few choice words), got the exhaust welded and re-fitted (after an hour of polishing the pipes and buffing the carbon fibre end can). Sounds ace.

Then I set about doing EVERY service item in the Haynes manual. 31 jobs in all. New fluid all round. New front pads. New rear tyre. One of the items was carb balancing, so I got myself a Morgan Carbtune. See pics of before and after.

I also posted about chain adjustment when touring. A Scottoiler V system seemed to be the tool of choice, so I got one of those too. Works a treat.

I also got a Ventura luggage system, Mini tank bag, Viper touring seat, sat-nav mount (for my phone) and a waterproof sports camera.

I got out yesterday for the first time in a couple of months and had a 110 mile run to bed everything in and see how the bike is feeling post alterations/service. I have to say, I am very, very pleased. The carbtune did its job, well worth it. The new pads are street racing grade, and with the Hel lines, it stop's well. The luggage hardly affected the ride and the seat is fantastic.  Got that tyre scrubbed in too  :lol . There is a wee bit of test ride footage from the sports-cam below. You can blame youtube for the poor quality, the original footage if much better.

So thank you to everyone who helped me out with the advice mentioned above. I will do a lap of the Nurburgring in honour of you Foccers.

General / Chain adjustment while touring?
« on: 07 August 2013, 12:02:36 am »
Hi Guys,

As some of you may know, I am going to the Nurburgring next month (I have posted it up here enough over the last 6 month, so you should know  :lol ). Well I have never toured abroad on the bike before, and touring in the UK is usually under 1000 miles, so chain adjustment before I go and upon my return is fine. However, I expect to cover 2500 - 3000 miles in 10 days. I would expect no more then 500 of those to be on the motorway, and 120 of them going round a track. If I were at home I would adjust my chain about 4 times doing all that. I have a quality Renthal set up and I own the tools to do the job, but is it worth taking a big bar and wrench and 2 big sockets? Given how heavy and bulky they are, and the fact that they don't fit under the seat, is it acceptable to adjust BEFORE I go, and not again until I return home? How do you foccers deal with this when your away?

General / Broken exhaust bracket advice
« on: 03 August 2013, 01:35:06 pm »
I am preparing the bike for a euro tour next month. I noticed the other day that the 3rd exhaust bracket (sitting on the bike) that holds the down pipe to the cylinder head has snapped in two! Now both sections of the bracket are held onto the bike with their bolts, and the exhaust is securely fixed by the other three down pipes. Now I am wondering, do I take the whole system off and get the bracket welded before I go, or do I leave it as it is and keep my money for my holiday? I have a full Leo Vince 4-2-1 system with a carbon fibre can, so I have no intention of replacing any of it. It will be a repair. I won't be using the bike for another week or two anyway, so no worries there. It just whether its worth the hassle or not... Oh, and I can't get a decent picture of it as a result of its location.

General / Sticking Throttle Cable
« on: 29 July 2013, 06:13:33 pm »
Advice please...

I have a 2000 model FZS 600. The throttle cable has been sticky for a while now, and on the last MOT the guy said to get it sorted before the next one.

When I open the throttle and let it go, it sticks. I stripped off the metal throttle cover and rubber goz and cleaned/lubricated the cable and all of the parts. I let the oil sit running down the cables since Saturday (till Monday) and they feel quite smooth. Soted, I thought. That is until I put the metal cover back on and tighten it. Then the problem comes back, possibly worse.

Obviously I can't leave these parts untightened, so where an I going wrong? Is this a common fault? And what can I do to resolve the issue, which I would like to do sooner rather than later as it is pretty dangerous.  :eek

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi guys,

My mother-in-law got me an android gift card for my birthday, but I am on windows and can't use it. I took it back to morrisons with the receipt, but was sent packing (by a very rude "customer service" employee). I will post it in the UK for £20. If anyone wants it, let me know. I can do PayPal, but bank transfer is preferable. Thanks

General / Chicken strips
« on: 18 July 2013, 11:46:31 pm »
Right-o, to start off, I'm no GP Hero, or even a wannabe. In the last 4 years of constant riding, I have managed to reduce my chicken strips to about 5mm'sh, with slightly more lean to the right than the left.
Next year I am looking to grow my garage again and add something more focused like a GSX-R750, Triumph Daytona 675 or Fireblade 900RR. I have been looking online to get an idea of prices and noticed that ALL of the ones for sale have 25mm+ chicken strips on both sides. Have a look yourself. I know that maybe that IS why they are for sale, but surly there must be some capable riders moving on to pastures new?
So, I guess my question is, what is the point in having a bike like that if you are incapable of using it? And, what about you guys and girls, do you/can you utilise everything your bike has to offer? I know I can not (yet), as I have that 5mm I spoke of before.
