Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Numpty Question
« on: 24 February 2024, 06:27:32 pm »
Does the gen 1 use JIS screws? I’ve managed to confuse myself😂😂😂😂

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Also….
« on: 23 February 2024, 09:55:48 am »
I’m thinking of replacing all the visible fairing and side panel bolts/screws.

Do I go via Fowlers or has anyone got any better suggestions?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Getting ready for Summer!
« on: 23 February 2024, 09:34:46 am »
Looking forward to getting back on the bike again (if it ever stops raining) so it’s time for the old oil change/exup valve maintenance.

One thing I was looking to do was the carb balancing.
This reminded me of the last time I did it and one of the metal stubs that the carb balancer pipes attached to came out of the rubber inlet stub.
I used some loctite to hold it in place but was wary of doing anything more in case I did more damage.
Anyone have any suggestions for a permanent fix?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Northwest 200
« on: 30 April 2023, 12:39:39 pm »
On the spur of the moment I’ve decided to visit the Northwest 200 and wondered if anyone has been and could offer some advice to save me wasting valuable time?
I’m going with my two (adult) boys who have very little interest in bikes so don’t want to tie myself into the inner circuit.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Fork help
« on: 19 October 2022, 05:17:58 pm »
I’m changing the fork oil following the Haynes manual.

It says to take note on the distance between the damper locknut and the top of the threaded damper rod. I measured it at 15mm.
I remember the guy who changed the fork oil last time commented that he didn’t know what this measurement was and had to Google it to find out.
I wondered if anyone knows if this is set correctly?

Thanks!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Noisy tyres, but only when warm?
« on: 28 August 2022, 04:03:33 pm »
I’ve got a noise like a stone rattling around in a plastic box coming from what sounds like the front end.
It’s not a mechanical noise but I can hear it until about 50mph. Above that it’s drowned out by the wind. Trouble is that now I’ve heard it I can’t ignore it!

After much playing I believe it’s nothing to do with the engine (noise is still there with the engine switched off and coasting).
It’s not the brakes as applying makes no difference.
I’ve had all the fairing panels off and applied tape at the joints.

It does however seem to be related to road surface, even though it doesn’t change pitch with speed. The coarser the surface the louder it seems to be. Looking on line it seems the tyres, Metz z6 roadtecs have a reputation for being noisey
So I thought I’d remove the front mudguard to see if it was amplifying the noise from the tyre.
I’ve just been out for a ride and thought I’d cracked it. The noise was absent, so went for a ride well pleased with myself.
Came back after a couple of miles and it made the same noise on the same road I’d been on not 5 miles earlier! The odd thing is that it was quiet after I’d already been out on a 5-10 mile run so the tyres shouldn’t have been appreciably warmer on the second lap.
I don’t believe it’s wheel bearings as it was only mot’d yesterday. The chains freshly oiled too.

It’s been put back in the garage and I’m having a sulk. Anyone have any ideas?

Almost since as long back as I can remember my bike has been making a noise that I’ve been unable to locate.
The closest I can get to describing it is that it sounds like the rattle you get from the clutch basket when you pull the clutch in.
Its not overly loud but I do notice it up to around 30 to 40mph. It might be there at higher speed but its drowned out by other noises.

Its a constant tone and doesn’t change with road speed or if the clutch is in or out.
I’ve checked just about everything from fairing panels rattling , through from mudguard resonating to chain tension.
I did at one point think it was the front tyre as it seemed to disappear after I replaced it, but I soon heard it again.

The one thing that’s just struck me was that perhaps its no more than a loose Exup valve rattling  away.
Could it be this? I’ve serviced it regularly so I know its free. I wonder if its too free!

I took the side panels off a month or so ago whilst I did a bit of tinkering.
Went to refit them and noticed that both of the top rubbers are missing.
Looking at the exploded diagram on Fowler’s website it shows the rubbers at the bottom but the top is shown as being attached to the air box cover not the frame.
Does anyone know if the top rubbers are the same as the bottom?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Pilot Screw adjuster
« on: 27 August 2020, 07:05:37 pm »
Was thinking of having a fiddle with the pilot airscrew adjusters.
Can anyone recommend a tool to do this with the carbs in situ?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Workshop Lift stand
« on: 28 January 2020, 08:15:46 pm »
I used to be able to rummage about under the bike, but with the advancing years. I’m finding it more difficult to actually get up afterwards!
I’ve therefore decided that a Worksop lift stand is required.
Looking around there seems to be a baffling array of stands ranging from cheap eBay lifts to expensive tailor made air powered jobbies.
There’s also variations on a Skylift theme with a single pole giving front/back wheel up poses or level with the use of straps.

I’ve never been able to make a decision so wondered if you guys had any advice?

I’m drawn to something like the Clarke CML3, but I’m open to suggestions.
I’d really like to buy used (cause I’m a tight) but they seem to be as rare as hens teeth!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Ivan kit and revisit to cold starting
« on: 19 October 2019, 05:54:29 pm »
I tried to put up with the ongoing cold start problems I’ve posted about before with the view that maybe it’s normal behaviour.
However, even if I left it idling for a couple of minutes it would still bog down really badly when I tried to drive off.
As we live off a busy junction it was getting dangerous trying to merge with traffic when the bike would just lose power when I let the clutch out and put the engine under some load.
When I did manage to coax it into moving It would be OK after a quarter of a mile or so.
From then on it pulls ok and idles with no issues.
So, I’ve decided that there is still something wrong with the carbs.
This time i decided that if I’ve got to whip them out again I also want to fit Ivan’s kit.
So The carbs are off the bike but before I fit Ivan’s kit I wondered if someone could offer advice on what I should look for in the cold start circuit.
All the plungers are moving and from the outside everything seems ok.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Coolant change
« on: 10 February 2019, 05:42:47 pm »
I’m about to have a go at changing the Coolant.
Any advice, suggestions, gotchas etc..?

Had a look on Pats page and a search of YouTube but there doesn’t seem to be anything around.
Maybe it’s dead easy then?

Looking at the drain bolt it looks like a right b’stard part to refit.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Another Exup question
« on: 26 January 2019, 04:01:30 pm »
So I’ve moved on from the TPS to exup  :D
Stripped it all down and cleaned/greased it.
Having put it all back together I started her up and could see that the valve moves about 45 degrees clockwise and stays there whatever the revs. When I switch the engine off it stays at the same position. Switching the ignition on will cause the valve to reset to the correct position over the hole.
I’m sure I’ve got the cables the same way round as before (black outer at the bottom - I might try to swap them over to check anyway) and the valve rotates fully without the cables attached.

Looking on YouTube it seems the valve is continually moving in line with engine revs.
One odd thing I noticed is that with the ignition on but the engine off,  I can hear the servo motor under the tank crackling intermittently (hunting?). It’s a very quiet noise and to be truthful Ive heard it before and just put it down to it being held in the correct position. Obviously I cant hear it with the engine on and there is no smell of burning.

Just thought - Could I have messed up on the TPS setting and that’s causing the Exup to have a paddy??  :eek

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / TPS question
« on: 24 January 2019, 07:19:16 pm »
Just giving the bike a good seeing to ready for when the sun comes out.
Decided to check the TPS for the first time (only had the bike for 10 years!) and following the advice elsewhere I got a  steady 10k reading.
Initially I couldn’t get it to move to a steady 5k - was bouncing between 5k & 10k until I twiddled with the tickover adjuster. I read elsewhere this is normal.

The question I have is that during this the cooling fan came on!!

I hadn’t started the engine and it was bloody cold in the garage so I was a little surprised to say the least.
Is this normal when in TPS set up mode?

Also, how would you set it up? As I said I’ve got it so it just sticks at 5k, but I’ve read elsewhere it should bounce between 5k & 10k.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Cold Blooded Starter
« on: 21 October 2018, 04:27:03 pm »
The bikes always been a bit hesitant when cold, needing a good couple of miles before its settled down, but last time I went out (it was sunny but nippy) I couldn’t pull away without it dieing on me.

The choke had an effect, but not enough to stop the engine bogging down when trying to move away.
Once I did manage to get going, it ran perfectly, tick over is fine and I get good power through the rev range.
I cleaned out the carbs this year so I know its not all gummed up.
Whilst the bike is an 05 its done less than 10k miles and is always garaged so all the rubbers are perfect.
Any ideas?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Recommended Dealer in Bristol area
« on: 23 October 2017, 06:28:48 pm »
I’ve got a 2005 FZS1000S (9500 miles) which was stored in a dry garage for about 3 years whilst I did other things.
I’ve just put it back on the road and it feels like its running out of fuel below 3k (sounds like a Subaru) before sort of clearing its throat.
It goes up to about 80mph OK but doesn’t feel like its as powerful as it used to be.
I’ve changed the plugs, serviced the EXUP (the valve was sticking so I hoped that was the problem, but it wasn’t).
I’ve let the fuel drain down and added some fresh fuel and that didn’t make any difference and I removed the air filter and sprayed some carb cleaner into air box again making no difference.
All the hoses seem in good condition and theres nothing obviously wrong.
I’ve decided I’m not really getting anywhere so plan to let a workshop have a look at it.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a workshop in the Bristol area ?
I live in Thornbury and I’d prefer them to pick up too if possible.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bike won't start noise from ignition switch?
« on: 18 April 2014, 03:49:55 pm »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone might be able to help me.
I've a Gen 1 Fazer 1000 with 9000 miles on the clock.
Planned to go for a ride this morning to enjoy the sunshine and it wouldn't start - the old starter solenoid clicking but not actually turning the motor over problem.
Thought it might be the fact that I'd not charged the battery, even though I'd used it last week with no problems, so I put it on charge.
Took about 10 minutes before the charger showed a full charge, so I don't think its the battery. (might be wrong of course)

Whilst I was messing around looking for a fault I noticed that when I switch the ignition on there is a crackling from the base of the ignition switch for 10 seconds or so then a click from the starter solenoid. Then the crackling stops.

I've looked at the plugin connector from the switch at the solenoid end and it looks free from corrosion.

Soooo I guess I'll have to remove and clean all the connections, but before I do I wondered if the collective knowledge here might be able to tell me its the 1st dooda on the left that's faulty and save me some time. I might even get out  before the good weather comes to an end!!!

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

thanks.
