Squeaky rear brake
« on: 15 July 2013, 01:50:26 pm »
When i spin the rear wheel there is a squeak coming form the rear brake, the wheel spins one turn with a bit of effort.
I assume that there is a sticky piston.
I'm going to take the caliper off, remove the pads, put a bit of wood inbetween the pistons and pump them out to give them a clean and regrease.
Does taking the resevior cap off help in returning the pistons to the in position?
Don't want to strip them down as i need the bike and am planning putting braided lines on in about 3 weeks so want to do it then if needs be.

It shouldn't make any difference, however probably best to take the cap off then you wont push the pistons in too far and push too much fluid back into the reservoir and overflow it.

Also check if your disc is warped or not. Get the caliper off and just put a marker very close to the disc and then spin the wheel. Look at the disc end on and see if there is any lateral movement. The gap between your marker and the disc should stay constant.
Feel the Fear and do it anyway!

Ok good advice thanks.
One piston moves freely so i've slapped some red grease on it. The other wouldn't move so i clamped the free one and forced it out, but now won't go back in.
Is this now a strip down job?

Or further to above do i replace with the braided line now, and with no fluid behind the piston maybe i will be easier to move???

To push the piston back in, try opening the bleed nipple to relieve the pressure (if any) - if that doesn't work it couldn't hurt to sort out the seals and remove the piston completely

Thanks deadeye.
I'll try that but might just put the new braided line on whilst i'm at it any way.

I use adjustable water pump pliers (2 0f) to push pistons back in if I can't do it with fingers, but if I do need to use them then I know the caliper's not far off needed a proper strip down and clean!

Oh, and when I do try to push them in with fingers I always remove the reservoir cap, makes it much easier!

The 2 little seals in the top right corner of the picture are they the ones that go inbetween the calliper halves????

I believe that's what it says in the listing,

Also- if the piston isn't pushed 'straight' in it can jam easily and give the impression its not going anywhere, this is where the adjustable wrenches come in handy and why you need 2 to push evenly on both sides of the piston, beware of damaging the paint Finnish on the calipers though so tape up the metal grips with gaffer tape or something.
Personally after pumpinmg out the pistons slightly and cleaning them with brake cleaner and a toothbrush and lightly greasing them I put the old brake pad back over the pistons and push against that so I don't mark the pistons!

This is just a reference as I think they have several names, can get them from halfords etc

I used a small-ish G-Clamp instead of those grip sort of things - found it fairly easy to use even with the cramped space between the caliper.
