Title: Focer font of knowledge AV experts
Post by: fazersharp on 05 January 2018, 04:01:24 pm
I am trying to plug in a PS2 into my tv but the ps2 only has phono outs Red White Yellow and the problem is those sockets are at the back of the tv which is on the wall and although I managed to get them in it can not stay like that.
But i have accessible connections at the bottom which I can get to, the first 2 pictures are from the tv manual shows how to make the connection so I brought a 4 pole 3.5mm/ 3 phono in the last picture and plugged in but just get lines on the screen and a buz with very low sound of the PS2.

Although the manual shows the tv socket as being a phono it is actually a 3.5 socket like the one on the far right marked HP which is for the headphone.

So what am I doing wrong focers

Might sound silly bit have you definitely plugged them into the right colours in the 3 to 1 lead? I've mixed up white and yellow a fair few times in the past 😅 I have the exactly same set up for my kids nintendo wii and it works fine?
If not I'm sure darrsi will be along soon to solve the issue for you haha

Unfortunately i know sod all about gaming, or the machines, although if it was in front of me it wouldn’t be so much of an issue.
See if this helps at all, especially noting if there’s a setting in the PS2 to change from RGB to YPbPr, and see if it helps at all?

Thanks for the link seems they were confused also
The YPbPr conections are like this in the manual but the ps2 olny has the 3 YBW

Are you sure that’s a mini jack input?

Highly unlikely for a manual to get that wrong, plus it does say “component audio”.

The AV3 description above that is just the channel input.

Also going from a Composite cable (yellow, red, white) straight to a Component input (RGB) doesn’t make any sense to me?

YBW or YRW ?

Haven actually tried a phono type plug in the socket but the 3.5 jack gos in just like it should if it was correct also you cannot separate out vidio and left and right phono to just 1 phono can you as it only has two connections, the outer metal and the inner male plug ? unless the left and right get put into one as mono and the video gos on its own.

Just been informed it’s unlikely the PS2 has Component out......so you’re stuffed.

Sounds like an excuse for a new telly  :D

Here are the actual leads and how I am setting them up --connected before you start (Tommy ) - the ps2 is the Y R W with the square plug on the end on the left of the picture

The tv has HDMI - USB Optical, you name it - but the ps 2 only has the cable in the picture. AS I said I can successfully plug the PS2 using YRW phono to phono direct to tv but those connections are at the back of the tv which is mounted on the wall and when the plugs are in they hit the tv mount bracket so I have wedged a block of cardboard behind to take the pressure off.

So am looking at other ways to plug in and then found the info in the manual which is supposed to work.

Just for future reference, those mini jack to Video/Audio short cables aren’t actually all wired the same, as i found out at work.
I think it’s Sony ones that are wired differently for their own equipment at the mini jack end.

So basically if you were to have one of these connected to non Sony equipment then you may need to join the wrong colours together, ie: white to yellow, etc, to make them compatible.

So the photo only shows composite cables, they won’t work with a component socket at all.

You can buy Composite to HDMI converters, dunno how much they would cost though?

I know it's the easy way out but you could just buy one of these?

Plugs into the ps2 then you can just use a standard HDMI cable

OK I will try swapping around combos but before I do will it damage anything and also why is there a 4th section on the 3.5 jack when only 3 go in

It’s not 4, only 3 are wired.

Get a 3RCA to HDMI converter on Ebay, for under a tenner.

All of the cheap ones are China but I did read this on one of the listings
Set PS2 component video output to #Y Cb/Pb Cr/Br# before using the converter

So as you already have mentioned Darrsi I am going to try that now

I am trying to plug in a PS2 into my tv but the ps2 only has phono outs Red White Yellow and the problem is those sockets are at the back of the tv which is on the wall and although I managed to get them in it can not stay like that...

Is your problem with the back connection that the wall-mounted TV does not sit back on the wall enough with the phono lead connectors plugged into the back of the TV? If so, have you considered a right-angled phono adapter which will not stick out so much from the back of the TV. Here is an example:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phono-Degree-Socket-Adaptor-Converter-Black/dp/B01D0BCRRY/ref=sr_1_20/260-1881042-2555820?ie=UTF8&qid=1515174389&sr=8-20&keywords=right+angle+phono+plug (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phono-Degree-Socket-Adaptor-Converter-Black/dp/B01D0BCRRY/ref=sr_1_20/260-1881042-2555820?ie=UTF8&qid=1515174389&sr=8-20&keywords=right+angle+phono+plug)

(sorry, your explanation about the bracket being in the way of the connection was not visible when I posted the above.)

Yes thats my problem and the right angle ones dont help as thelip of the bracket on the wall falls exactly on the plugs if I cut off the lip then the 90degree ones would work

I tried changing the ps2 settings output but that did not help.

But I did also try the yellwo in each plug in turn and found that if I put the PS2 yellow into the tv White tail of the 3.5 plug I could see some flashes of the ps setup screen and when I pulled the 3.5 jack almost all the way out I got a clear picture, its like the 4 sections of the jack plug dont line up with the connection inside the tv unless my 3.5 to RCA is a dodgy one

Been fiddling and found that red-red and white -white without the yellow then I still get a faint buz sound but the left and right speakers are working from the PS2 as they should and soon as I add the yellow the buz gets loud and still no vid.
If I plug the PS2 yellow into the white of the tv and leave off the white and red from the ps2 then pull out the 3.5 plug almost all the way I then get the vid signal as I should. Its like the 4 connections on the 3.5 post are in the wrong place.

Don't worry: you will not damage anything by changing the order of the signals.

Thee phonos into a four-contact jack is correct (three signals [RWY] and one common earth [the three screens of the phono plugs]).

There are six possible combinations of three signals: just try all combinations and see if you find a combination that works.

To make it simpler to do, here are all the combinations:

RWY
RYW
WRY
WYR
YRW
YWR

what you are doing will never work since your are trying to get a signal "OUT" of an "IN" port.

It requires a special cable with a Sony unique plug to plug into the Sony unique PS2 "AV1 RGB" port. that will give you your Sound and video out.

Now I am getting some where the one that works the best is 231 but with the 3.5 plug all the way in I get a buz and a flickering screen until I partly pull out the 3.5 plug and then get a perfect screen and no buz but only sound out of 1 speaker - the right and if I very very gently twiddle the plug I get sound out of the left speaker but not the right no amount of twiddling at 231 gets the sound out of both speakers unless it is a loud buz with no vid.

I am getting close to a beer and if that happens I may well need a new tv and PS

The background to all of this and why I am not buying a PS 3/4 is because I do not game or need one but this ps2 was a friends who brought it around to Sharp Hall for new years eve and they have 14 singstars that only work on ps2.
WE had such a laugh that it may be used again for partys and new year but other than that its not used so spending £2 on the cable I have got I dont mind

By pulling out the plug a notch you are changing the contact sequence of the wiring to the socket and plug.

 Ps red to tv yellow
ps white to tv red

OK.

Can you try this:

(1) Remove all PS2 BNC phono plugs.

(2) Push the four contact jack fully home into and out of the TV jack socket at least ten times (hopefully to clean the contacts and exercise the jack socket internal switch- if fitted).

(3) Connect the yellow PS2 phone plug to the TV BNC phono sockets in turn.

(4) Which connection gives you a picture (there should be no sound from the TV left or right speakers).

I hope you don't mind me answering this question which was addressed to you unfazed.

The PS2 plug with the metal on the outside is a better plug than one with a plastic outside but the metal only acts as a local screen and has no affect on the functioning of the cable (other screen connections are included on the contacts of the PS2 connector). Of course, the metal version will wear better.

Ok thanks everyone I will try in out 10 times tomorrow, sounds like a good idea as that socket has never been used in 5 years.

So buying the lead with the metal instead of plastic will make no difference then. When I look down the connection socket that is actually on the PS2 I can see that there are metal contacts that would connect with a metal plug, unless they are just spring loaded do-dahs to hold any plug in place plastic or metal. Odd taht the OEM sony one is plastic and yet there are after market ones that are metal.

It is quite normal to have connectors with different constructions. Don't concern yourself with the plastic/metal thing. It could even be that the plastic plug is, overall, a better quality connector.

Oh Sharpie!
I am so surprised that Lady Sharp even allows you to fuck about on a play station, you should be out in the grounds of Sharp Hall doing maintenance not pissing around with the offspring's toys.
Get your wellies on and get out there man, for it will not be long before the visitors start to flood to the Black and Gold painted wrought iron gates at the end of your drive demanding admission to the Stately Home and its opulent grounds.
I feel loathed to mention that the visitors centre could do with a lick of paint, I did notice that the last time the wife and I and the rest of the peasants form Hampshire came up to visit during summer.

The picture below was the one i like to most of your pad, I sneaked the shot as we humbly approached the impressive gateway to the Estate, I got a few dirty looks from staff but they allowed me to keep my camera, for which I am eternally grateful.

Does the PS2 work when you plug it into the other sockets that you don't wish to use? - Just making sure there's nothing wrong with the PS2 and the output lead.

Looking at your original post I may have noticed a problem.

The picture of the sockets at the rear of your TV. You have circled the socket you wish to use, the line of that circle goes through another socket next to the one you're trying to use. To me, it looks like you should be using both sockets. One for Audio (left) and one for video (right).

The easiest option would be to buy a PS2 to HDMI Converter.

Yes, there does seem to be something odd going on because one of the combinations of connections should work OK on most TVs (as far as I know).

My thoughts are that:

(1) there is a specific fault with the system somewhere: jack socket on TV, or phono to jack cable (the PS2 to phono lead has been proved because it works when plugged in the back of the TV).

(2) the TV has a non-standard A/V jack socket arrangement (knowing the TV model may allow this to be resolved)

(3) the output from the PS2 needs to be set up from the configuration menu

(5) the jack plug is simply not going fully home into the jack socket on the TV for some mechanical reason

I know this is now a long thread but that has been delt with earlier yes the lead has been used ok when plugged into the back of the tv

The picture is direct from the pdf manual I have not circled it - that is how it is in the manual showing which socket to use.
Here is a picture of the input screen showing that the AV 3 has been plugged into and showing that AV 3 is a YRW - Composite and the second picture is how it looks with the 3.5 plugged all the way in - also comes with a loud buz if I pull out the plug part way the buz gos and I get a proper picture but only sound out of 1 speaker
I know i am no selected the input on the picture but i just moved the selection so that you could see that the AV3 is in colour and live (not greyed out)

(4) the output from the PS2 needs to be set up from the configuration menu

(5) the jack plug is simply not going fully home into the jack socket on the TV for some mechanical reason

Here is the tv LG 55lw550t
I have tried another YRW to 3.5
I have tried different output settings on the PS2
Quote
(5) the jack plug is simply not going fully home into the jack socket on the TV for some mechanical reason

Due to the nature of access I can just about get my fingertips to it so I will get the pliers out and push

Picture from underneath showing the original problem of the AV2 plugs hitting the tv mount and apart from that it is in practical to take the tv off the wall to plug them in even as a temporary measure leaving them bouncing on the tv mount. I hook for the tv mount is on the top so the tv is hinged at the top and pushing down on the plugs and the tv is slightly tilted up because of it.

The ultamate fix would be to buy a PS2 AV to DVI adapter but that's almost not the point now after all this

There are no pictures of the ps2 in this thread

Does the PS2 work when you plug it into the other sockets that you don't wish to use? - Just making sure there's nothing wrong with the PS2 and the output lead.

Looking at your original post I may have noticed a problem.

The picture of the sockets at the rear of your TV. You have circled the socket you wish to use, the line of that circle goes through another socket next to the one you're trying to use. To me, it looks like you should be using both sockets. One for Audio (left) and one for video (right).

The easiest option would be to buy a PS2 to HDMI Converter.

Component and Composite are different, the PS2 is Composite only, so it won't work.

This is how the tv is saying to connect component --- again it is showing RCA?phono to the tv but the connection plug is a 3.5 jack

I think I need a special LG one as I have found this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-TV-COMPONENT-ADAPTOR-CABLE-LEAD-FOR-BREAK-OUT-CABLE-LG-LM7600-TV-/142095710525 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-TV-COMPONENT-ADAPTOR-CABLE-LEAD-FOR-BREAK-OUT-CABLE-LG-LM7600-TV-/142095710525) and the tv is listed and the bottom section is a lot longer than the standard ones I have been trying

Also found this but from the picture it looks the same short bottom section. But why would they be selling it as an LG tV one if its just the same as any other YRW -3.5 the LG ones muse be different somehow

That's the exact one I posted a picture of earlier but mine came with my Samsung tv. I'm sure they are just generic but eBay sellers just list then for specific tv's

Still strange to me, that is a blatant photo of a phono/RCA connector?

As hinted earlier, are you sure that right angled RCA plugs won't do the job?
I have a feeling they might do.

Unfortunately i have to go back to work tomorrow, after 16 days off, if i can find some i'll post you them to try out.

User Manual for the LG 55LW550T here:

http://www.lg.com/uk/support/support-product/lg-55LW550T (http://www.lg.com/uk/support/support-product/lg-55LW550T)

From the manual there seems to be some ambiguity between the input connections (page12) and the input selection options using the remote control (page 43).

The TV has AV1, AV2, and AV3 connections and a single component connection, but the menu shows only AV1 and AV2 but Component 1 and Component 2.

(the AV signals are, composite video, left audio, right audio, and screen [earth])

Is this what you find in practice? If so, what input selection did you make when testing the composite jack input?

Thats good of you but I already have some 90 degree ones, I have a load of phono type plugs leads and the ones that I used and are in the picture plugged in were the shortest plug/plastic section I could find, I then cut back the plastic anti pul/bend sheath and some of the plug plastic itself so they are actually shorter now than the 90 degree adapters
you can see them here

From the manual there seems to be some ambiguity between the input connections (page12) and the input selection options using the remote control (page 43).

The TV has AV1, AV2, and AV3 connections and a single component connection, but the menu shows only AV1 and AV2 but Component 1 and Component 2.

(the AV signals are, composite video, left audio, right audio, and screen [earth])

Is this what you find in practice? If so, what input selection did you make when testing the composite jack input?

The manual covers a few tvs that are all slightly different and the input screen in the manual on page 43 is for one of the featured tvs but my input screen is this
(http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=23629.0;attach=31348;image)

AV 3 is the one I am trying to get to work and AV2 is the one with the plugs bouncing off the tv mount I am only on the blue highlighted RGB in thye picture to show that the AV3 is activated because it is in colour and not greyed out.
On the PS2 output I tried both Pb Rr - whatever and The other one and it made no difference.

This close up of the manual shows the AV 3 input in question and tells me it is aduid/ video and if you follow the arrow around it points to the socket I am using.

I have realised that using the Sony av to dvi is a non starter because it uses one the 2 USB connections on the PS2 and I need those for the singstar microphones and a quiz game called buz, we have two sets of buz so 8 people can play and two sets of microphones for sing star

Thanks- that clears up the TV input selection ambiguity nicely.

As far as I can tell, after reading the TV user manual and PS2 user manual, this is a summary of the position.

(1) The PS2 can output composite video, left audio and right audio signals on the three phono connectors of the PS2 lead.

(2) The TV AV3 jack socket accepts the (1) above signals.

(3) The depiction of a phono plug in the TV manual is simply an error and should show a jack plug.

(4) The TV component input is achieved by by feeding the three component video signals (Y, Pb, Pr) into the right TV jack socket (to supply video to the TV)  A separate cable then feeds left and right audio to the TV composite input (AV3) to provide sound as shown in the TV user manual. This is not relevant to the present exercise but is just to explain the two jack connections on the TV.

The conclusion is that the PS2/TV AV3 connection should work.

I suggest that the best way forward is to establish the video connection first and leave the audio disconnected for the time being.

The composite video input is the yellow connector on the cable that connects to the TV AV3 jack socket, so, (with the jack plug pushed fully home into the TV AV3 jack socket and AV3 input selected on the TV menu) if you could connect each of the signals from the PS2 to the yellow connector in turn and find which one (if any) gives a picture that would be a great help in getting the AV3 input working.

The only way I get a proper vid signal is PS2 yellow plugged into the TVs 3.5 jack white BUT with the jack plug pulled out by one section as in this picture

Here is some comparison pictures of a standard straight and 90 degree and the one I am actually using and still hits the tv mount I have plugged them into adapters to reproduce them being plugged into to tv socket so you can see side by side.
Yes shortest is the 90 degree but the one I am using is the middle one and I have paired back as much plastic as I dare down to the red mark and as that you can see that it is a lot shorter than a 90 degree adapter. Also the 90 degree adapter has quite a big and solid square block and the one I have paired down is to a thin point

The final solution then will be to get a new tv bracket that gives more space for cables behind the TV :pokefun

OK. I am now pretty sure that the jack plug, that fits into the AV3 socket on the TV, is not going in far enough (for whatever reason).

It it possible to remove some material carefully from the jack plug and possibly from the surface of the jack socket on the TV so that the jack plug goes in further.

A composite video cable with a longer jack may do the job. Like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Extra-Long-3-5mm-4-Pole-Headphone-Jack-Plug-to-3-RCA-Female-AV-Video-Cable-Lead-/171643411892 (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Extra-Long-3-5mm-4-Pole-Headphone-Jack-Plug-to-3-RCA-Female-AV-Video-Cable-Lead-/171643411892)

(I know you also found a cable with a long jack plug, but I think that was for component video)

You’re missing his point, the way his connector is wired is not the same as the PS2, so by pulling the jack out by one section will make it work......sort of.

I am not missing any point. I am quite aware that the colour of the connections between the PS2 and the TV might be a different order, as you have stated on a number of occasions and as I have tried to resolve by requesting various tests.

But the point that you seem to miss is that, the evidence indicates that the four contacts on the jack plug are not making proper contact with all four contacts on the TV jack socket. That, I think is the fundamental issue.

Yes, I think that supports the contacts not lining up theory. Did you see my post #82, about the composite cable with the longer jack?

By the way, for the image to be correct two connections must be correct: 'Composite Video' and 'Screen'.

Ok the yellow from the ps2 only gets any vid when connected to the white on the tv side BUT the resulting picture is all broken up NOTE I can push the jack all the way in but when I do the result is broken picture and a loud buz from both speakers.

The photo of the party inserted plug is showing the plug when I have pulled it out and not the fact that it wont go in any further.
I only get a good picture when the plug is pulled out to that position BUT only sound through the right speaker

Looks to me like the TV needs a manufacturer specific cable. Probably cheaper and easier to fit a block of wood behind the tv to give you the space you need or get a new bracket that is slightly further off the wall.

That figures. The video connections might be using one of the audio lines (L or R) as screen (ground) connection. To video, (high frequency) the audio channels (low frequency) could act as a ground, sort of.

A rolling distorted picture could indicate a correct  video connection but no screen connection of any sort.

I am not using oem LG ones  and there are "official" LG ones on ebay -etc but the post sections look the same so it must be the ground position along the posts that I am using is different to the lg one. The official lg ones it seems should of been supplied with the tv including a component to 3.5 jack. I have a big box of leads and connectors but not any that supposed to come with the tv. I will get up into Sharp Halls loft and check if they are still sitting in any of the tv/blueray boxes.

In case you don't know:

The cable on the left is for component video (to connect to the jack socket to the right of the TV AV3 jack socket)

The cable in the middle is for use with component video to give L and R audio (to connect to the AV3 jack socket on the TV)

The cable to the right is a SCART (Euro) adapter (plugs into the SCART socket on the TV)

You could get a SCART to Phono socket adapter and connect the Composite, L audio, and R audio phono plugs from the PS2 into the SCART to Phono adapter.
