FZS 1000 rather than an FZ1 Val

I was looking to improve my seat and finally decided to go with these guys at some point:

http://www.sussexmotorcycles.com/elite-comfort-motorcycle-seats.html

The price seems very reasonable and they say good memory foam is better than gel.

I am inlcined to beleive that.

Make sure they are not too old, power extinguisher have around 10 years lifespan.

I have one in the car and one in the kitchen, probably would be good idea to get one for the garage too  :lol

« on: 22 June 2015, 01:26:07 pm »
hi all what size and best cover can you get for a reasonable price??

and how do you rate the muck off product

I have used in the past this one, it is important your cover to be breathable so that the bike can dry off after rain ride:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorcycle-Motorbike-Waterproof-Protective-Breathable/dp/B005UUY5HO

Muck Off - not very pleased I was expecting more. WD40 cleaner again very weak. Both can't do much for old grime without serious elbow grease. I was using in the past Castrol Greentec and it is better than Muc off and WD40.

Again really not happy with these expensive cleaners. Now I just use some cheap car shampoo. Will try soon the cheapest oven foam cleaner that I can find.

The bike needs fresh air otherwise it will catch mould  :lol

Just joking, misus does not like bikes, but likes sleeping long time till noon weekend mornings, hence I am  going on bike fun trips mostly morning time in the weekends.

Afternoons we are off all together on 4x4 somewhere. Fair enough to me, because it will be kind of hard to get all the family, including two naughty boxers on the bike.

Weekdays I am commuting with the bike.

« on: 21 June 2015, 02:33:56 pm »
been in simlar position buying bolts recently......one thing i learned, be aware not all bolts are made equal, they all have different properties and will have been chosen for their purpose when the bike was put together, i have in the past purchased bolts that were not OEM but i made sure they were the same material and grade i.e. 8.8, 12.9 A2, etc....there are international standards the allow you to usually detemrine the type and grade of a threaded fastner....

http://www.westfieldfasteners.co.uk/Ref_Strength_Spec.html

https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/Materials-and-Grades/Materials.aspx

When it comes to parts like engine mount bolts and suspension linkages i would be tending to side with OEM, i don't know enought about the material physics and properties to make the correct informed decisions....but thats just me - i am a little OTT sometimes!

Hi anutz, sorry to hijack the tread, I have a lot of rusty bolts and want to replace them, any chance you can post the sizes and threads and grades for the ones you have bought? And from where?

Thanks if you can help. Guy

General / good cheap grime and dirt cleaner?
« on: 18 June 2015, 06:02:24 pm »
Hello,

I am sick of paying a lot of money for expensive grime and dirt cleaners.

I have used in the past Castrol and it is good bike cleaner. Have read very good reviews about SDoc100. Have used plenty of WD40 for cleaning.

The problem with these is they are expenisve like hell and frankly I am sick of paying £5-£10 pounds for 500ml cleaner.

Any ideas for homemade or possibly cheap kitchen cleaner that will do the same job for lot less?

I will try soon oven foam cleaner have read very good reviews for using it to remove grime from car engines.

Here is my list to try, feel free to add any homemade ideas.

Note do not like idea of puring large ammounts of diesel fuel in the drains. If you have anything that is cheap and nature friendly that would be great.

General / Re: when does filtering become DWDC?
« on: 17 June 2015, 12:11:46 am »
Cops I've spoken to about this subject and other things bike related have always quoted "you must be able to stop on your own side of the road that can be seen" so in general terms, if it's deemed that you can't when your filtering and an accident prevales, guess who's at fault? Regardless of the cage driver turning into your path as you filter :eek
Law is an ass really.

Acually cops do not have any word whatsoever on the legality of filtering. They can do you for dangerous driving, but again nothing to do with filtering per se which is perfectly legal.

London cops are pretty relaxed about filtering. Obviously for local ones filtering may look like thousands of kittens bloodbath  :eek

Anyway if there is an accident thankfully not the cops, but the court decides who is to blame  :D

So, I've been riding with Motul oil that I changed 3 months ago and I must say I don't really like it...  :\
The gearbox in particular became noticeably harsher, gear changes louder and harder.
Even my friend, who had Fazer 600 a few years ago said he once put Motul in and never again, due to same reasons.
Gonna switch to something else as soon as possible, probably Castrol.

Try Fuchs Silkolene Comp 4 10w-40 XP Synthetic Ester Based 4-Stroke Engine Oil For High Performance Motorcycles

that looks good to me....same price buying blind on ebay......surely they cant referb cast that's breaking away

hang on they don't send old ones back when done do they?????

They do actually if you can afford to wait till they rebuild or refurbish it they will send you back your original caliper if you want. Exchange is for guys that can't wait.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: changing sprockets, +1 on front only
« on: 15 June 2015, 01:46:29 am »
i dont mind loosing some acceleration as itll pop up in 2nd with the clutch and 1st under power which id like to get rid of really as spritely acceleration off lights often ends in the front wheel off the floor.

ill go +1 on the front and see how it copes if i need a little more acceleration ill go -2 on rear.

Actually +1 front equals approximately to changing -3 rear.

Means if you go now with +1 front =16 tooth this will give you ratio of 48/16=3.0 the standard ratio is 48/15=3.2

If you want to go back to standard ratio without changing the front sprocket you'll need to go +3 rear to 51/16=3.1875

Going -2 means ratio 46/16=2.875 means you will loose acceleration more but gain top speed and lower your rpms more.

Personally I have decided to go for +2 front only which will be 48/17=2.82 lowering my rpms with about 500 to 800 rpms depending on the gear and increasing the top speed from standard 142mph to 162mph, of course I can't get that speed legally  :lol

im often sat at 70-80 and it feels too revvy for my liking, i dont mind dropping gears to overtake its worth it for the fuel saving.

I am looking to change the ratio or not, have not decided yet. Going up or down or to stay at standard.

I do town riding mostly and I am looking to go say 14/51.

If you have a lot fo motorway make sense to go with lower ratio. According to this guy who has done +1 front and -1 back, he said that probably would like to have done it more like +2 front means 17/47:

http://www.bikesandtravels.com/biker.aspx?ride=379

Obviously you need to try it to see do you like it. Some people like it some not.

See this guy running 17 front sprocket:

hi darrsi

don't think new seals and pistons are gonna cut it....when pumping the brake to move piston out...
the seals were getting pushed out with it ...looks like the wall around the piston has started to brake away.

Yamaha support pad number 6 on the parts list AJ SUTTON

there is one on ebay re-con looks ok £148 sound ok on price?

That sounds expensive. I am planning to do a caliper exchange at some point.

There is a company you send them the old caliper they send you back immediately the same brand refurbished one. And by refirbished they mean better than rebuild with complete makeover with new parts if needed.

http://www.powerhouseautomotive.co.uk/content/motorcycle-brakes/motorcycle-brake-caliper-exchange-service.php

They have ebay shop too. And are an UK based company with calipers for sporty cars and bikes their main business, not some dodgy ebay seller.

I do not think it is wise idea to trust your life to some non-professional about brakes.

I do a lot of bike DIY but I would not trust myself for that matter.

If I was you I would give them a call.

« on: 13 June 2015, 01:28:20 pm »
Afternoon All,

Just returned from a fantastic 6 days in the Scottish Highlands, enjoying my new toy :) However, a small lane with some gravel caught me out and I dropped the bike at 5mph :(
Damage to front cowling, FR indicator, clutch crankcase cover, front brake lever, rear brake pedal, FR bar-end and exhaust! Dammit!

I know I can look through eBay for all of these parts, but can anyone recommend a website which offers all genuine parts? I'm struggling to find one. One shop do all?
Any advice much appreciated.....

Sorry to hear that.

try https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/

Having said that always double check your part number with oficial Yamaha catalog here

http://www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/services/online-parts-catalogue/index.aspx#

Fowlers part catalog sometimes gives dodgy part numbers.
