Title: engine re-paint, silver
Post by: red98 on 06 May 2015, 08:27:31 pm
The silver paint on my thou's engine is flaking bad, ive just replaced the fork seals so thought it a good time to sort the flakey paint out, forks off the bike so I can easily get to the front of the engine, started dismantling at the weekend, exhaust, radiator, oil filter +oil , clutch cover, generator cover and timing cover, going to blast the three covers as they are quite bad and are the first thing you see, will paint them off the bike and refit with new gaskets, front of the engine I will attack with gunk and a selection of wire brushes, a lot of it will be hidden by the rad and exhaust but it looks awful  :eek....I bought a blast gun years ago but my compressor is not quite man enough to power it, got loads of air at work, most of it hot  :rolleyes and the boss is away untill next week, guess what iam doing friday  ;)

so, anyone else done this job ?.or got any tips ?...

Repainted mine a couple of years ago , I cleaned the engine with engine cleaner , removed the loose bits with sandpaper , lightly rubbed the engine down , used Simonez is aluminium engine paint , doesn't need priming , I reckon it will be good for a couple more years , I did remove the radiator , downpipe , sprocket and air filter covers beforehand and used loads of paper and masking tape .

I would not be grit blasting my engine with all of those holes leading to the internals. I know somebody who had an old Gardener engine and did exactly the same as you intend. He sealed all the holes, or so he thought. Guess how long the engine lasted when he started it up? It costs thousands for a strip down.

hi OLD SON......just going to blast the covers off the bike, then a good flushing with gunk and an airline  ;) ..then do as ESETEST ,with the rest of the engine ...

I did mine while the removing the induction system thingy......cleaned it down with an anti greaser, lightly sanded off the remaining crap and used Simoneze Aluminium high temperature paint....came up a treat

That looks good BBB.....painting the exhaust clamps was a good idea, mine are in a terrible state   :\

here's when i did mine. like any painting work it's time consuming to get right but it still looks good today... the thread turned into a sheared stud removal debate for while but essentially it's engine painting.

WOW.....nice work BLUDCLOT  :thumbup.......mines not going to be that good, its in a far, far worse state than yours  :o

done a bit more this weekend, blasted the three covers , generator, timing and clutch.off the bike on friday, got rid of all the flaky paint sanded down too a smooth finish and are ready for painting, gunked the front of the engine and then I noticed the cam covers looking a bit rough.so...next job is to remove the AIS.had a look but cant see the best way to get it off so just about to sit down and ask mr haynes.......not taken the oil cooler off yet, so thats a job for one evening in the week, all being well I'll be painting next weekend....oh.need to remove the front engine mount crossmember and give that the same treatment.......very time consuming job, but will be worth it in the end  :)

My engine is paint is appalling. I'm too scared to remove the exhaust in case anything breaks/snaps.  Maybe I'll grow a pair and do it soon

Yes, when I put it back together after checking the valve clearances, changing the plugs and replacing the downpipes. (full stainless OEM ones)

I used the Holeshot kit which is run by Dale Walker , great guy to deal with.

There is no drilling or tapping with his kit  http://www.holeshot.com//imgsrv/w_640/fz1/fz1_ais_cap.jpg (http://www.holeshot.com//imgsrv/w_640/fz1/fz1_ais_cap.jpg)

great link...thank you UNFAZED  :thumbup .........looks better with the AIS out of the way and plenty of room to remove plugs and cam cover.......not my intention to spend money on extras for this bike,i bought it to ride it.think i may make an exception here though  ;)

Wonder how it would look with black covers and a silver engine?  :eek
Title: Re: engine re-paint, silver
Post by: red98 on 15 May 2015, 08:06:36 pm
Funny you should say that UNFAZED...the round plug in the timing cover is rubber/plastic and I dont really want to paint it, its just starting to flake on the edges, hardly noticeable but I know its there  :rolleyes  so was thinking of stripping the silver off and leaving it black.........might work...

instant gasket it is then for the timing cover   :thumbup

no work on the fazer today, started work at 7 this morning and only just got in.....time to chill   ;)

FIREBLAKE....back of the engine was ok so didnt paint, I just blended in on cylinders 1+4.when I de-mask I'll take a piccie of that area and post here...

Cleaned the rad bottom center bracket tonight, the one that bolts to the centre of the engine, sprayed with grey primer in readyness for a top coat of black, hung it up to dry and then brushed by it and knocked it too the floor    :o...I'll start again tomorrow  :rolleyes

Fitted the slotted timing cover plug to see what the colour match is like, I haven't painted the plug, not perfect but not bad ....

looking great red.

painting can be a nightmare - i finished my r6 wheels with their final coat of lacquer on my garage floor, stood up and knocked a spanner off the shelf which fell into the rear wheel and bounced around it before settling, took a step backwards in horror at what i had done and back heeled the front wheel which fell off the wooden supporting blocks and put a load of marks into the rim!

:lol :lol :lol......think that might be a little to much for me.....I am a bit worried with the amount of silver I've added to the bike over the last couple of weeks, I recon its got to amount to an extra 25 bhp, remember my bikes bodywork is also silver, all in all I think the beast will be pushing out close to 250 bhp by the time iam finished....

just fitted the clutch and timing cover, also painted the exhaust mounting flanges.........yep, more silver   :eek

When I put my Akra silencer + link pipe on it needed some loops welding on the collector side for the springs (the link pipe was a race Ti one for an R1), I knocked off the surface dirt etc with a sanding disk and it was bright and shiney, I always wondered if anyone had taken the time to polish it all up.

It always amazed me that Yamaha didn't add a little screw on chromed cover either side to hide the bare metal? I suppose that would just be another thing with Cheese bolts the 2nd or 3rd owner would have to sort out before sorting the seized EXUP bolts.

Out with my son yesterday on our push bikes.a great day spent at bracknel forest   :thumbup....got back early evening and straight out to the garage, fitted the rad, front forks, mudguard and brake calipers, up at 6 this morning and fitted all the little bits and pieces and filled the coolant system, pushed the starter and started instantly.  :).........let it run up to temperature and checked for leaks both oil and water, all good.....5 mins on the PC and its taxed, iam off     :D :D

I also replaced the fork seals and oil and could feel the difference instantly, well worth doing if not been done for a while.stopped after about 5 miles and gave the bike a quick check over, oil, water etc, all good so I head out towards oxford and drop into 'H's cafe at dorchester for brekkie, about 100 miles this morning in brillant sunshine and thd bike ran well, stopped at wallingford for ice cream and piccies....happy with the results, but it has made other bits and pieces look a bit shabby   :rolleyes

Thank you UNFAZED  :)........such a nice day I went out again this afternoon, just up to the ace cafe for tea, about 25 miles, got off the bike and I had a little trickle of coolant running off the bottom of the front sprocket cover, could'nt see where it was coming from and no tools to get the cover off, stopped after a couple of minutes so I bought a bottle of water and took it easy on the way home stopping and checking the level every few miles, got home ok, took the sprocket cover off and moved the hoses about a bit and got sprayed with coolant from the hose that runs from the union to the left of the front sprocket to the back of the cylinder barrels, I must have trapped it when fitting the cover  :o.......

Title: Re: engine re-paint, silver
Post by: red98 on 07 June 2015, 09:52:27 pm
Well spotted devilsyam.i bought some stainless domed nuts, went to fit them but were too shallow, hitting the inside of the dome before being tight on the exhaust flange, should have checked size before buying  :o....might remove the exhaust to paint the collector box, if I do I'll get the correct nuts and fit them then...

Seams to be a common problem on the silver engines...took me longer than expected but had to be done...if yours is not too bad how about touching it up with a small brush ?

Touch up would probably do, your colour match looks good do you think spraying a bit into the lid and then a small brush is viable.

Yeh, I think that would do it, ive got a couple of small chips to do and plan to paint them this way...ive used hycote paint, the match is good but its a bit too matt, ive also used simoniz on other projects and this has more of a sparkle to it, think this would be a better match for the fazer....

Have a heart! "A bit shabby", it makes my bike look positivly unloved!

A bit like the day I saw my mates ex-wife after she got a boob job. I had forgotten just how good looking she could be.

Seams to be a problem with the silver painted engines, worth putting up with though as they have a lot more horses than the black ones  :pokefun
