Definitely Oxford Muffs in winter. I fitted these to stop the wind blowing the muffs against the levers: works a treat. Heated grips and summer gloves are all you need.

General / Re: Boots gor-tex and polish
« on: 18 January 2014, 11:24:06 am »
My Alt-Bergs are leather with a breathable Goretex type lining. Alt-berg recommend using their polish to help the leather repel water. If your boots have a leather outer, eventually the leather will dry out and crack I'd you don't treat it, especially if it is getting wet then drying out through riding in the wet.

BTW normal shoe Polish is not designed to repel water. Outdoor shops stock the stuff to help repel water. Alt-Bergs own stuff is very good and can be bought online through their website.

Sandy Bike Spares SS downpipes and original end can on mine. Downpipes very good quality and fitted easily onto the bike.

Splash out and get the heavy duty gold one, they're priddy and will last longer with little maintenance if you treat it well.  :)
Get it from anywhere but M&P or Busters if you want it before 2015, they take the piss every time with delivery.

+1 for this one. Just put one on mine after a piddly inferior chain lasted 4k. The heavy duty gold DID that I had on had done at least 17k.

The cone on my light broke which caused a mot fail. I removed it and it passed its mot.

I don't think you can cash in a pension. As far as I was aware, you can either transfer it to another pension, or leave if until it is due to mature. Ring the pension company. They will tell you what you can or can't do.

Gear box oil for me. Brush it on with a paint brush. Less messy than most chain oils. You have to reapply more frequently in winter. Also cheap and goes along way.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fixing puncture of a ZR rated tyre
« on: 16 November 2013, 01:23:01 pm »
Got the puncture repaired for £12 at a local bike tyre place. Seems ok. Let's hope it holds out. Gave me chance to clean the inside of the swing arm that was caked in a few year's worth of oil whilst I had the wheel out.

According to Crafty Plugger's website it is more of a 'get you home' fix rather than something more permanent. Have you had one in a tyre for a longer term fix?

« on: 10 November 2013, 08:26:04 pm »
Just picked a puncture on the rear tyre of my Pilot Road 2s. A screw nicely embedded. Just checked the website o the tyre place I normally go to get tyres to see his prices for repairing punctures to find he doesn't repair ZR rated tyres. Is this normal? I had one repaired a couple of summer's ago on Pilot Road 2s at a different place.

My dad bought his CBF1000 from them in feb last year. Got a good deal. Had no problems. They didn't offer a very good trade in price so he sold his bike privately and bought the bike cash. They turn over bikes quickly because they buy from all over the UK cheaply. they can sell them relatively cheaply. I don't know what their after sales service is like if you had an issue.

4.5K!!

Lubricate your chain man!

You should see at least 30k from a chain...

I lube my chain after every ride. It was a cheap chain that the garage put on. The previous DID chain did at least 15k.

Fitted lever protectors on to stop my Oxford Muffs pushing against the levers. Seems to work. Also had new gold DID chain fitted. The last chain lasted a proxy 4500 miles. Expecting at least 12k from this chain.

Out today. Seaways cafe Fridaythorpe. Gold Fazer with yellow screen parked up there as well. A bit wet on the way there. Dried up on the way back to Huddersfield although the wind was picking up. Staying in tomorrow. The sofa is looking tempting.

General / Re: Lacking in Confidence
« on: 26 October 2013, 09:25:52 am »
I find if I've had a few weeks off the bike, it takes a little while to really throw the bike around in the corners. Last year I did about 12000 miles on the Fazer and felt very confident; second nature. This year my riding has been a little more intermittent so it takes a little while into the ride before I'm at that same level of confidence.

I wear Altberg http://www.altberg.co.uk/product/clubmanroadster/

Not stylish but totally waterproof and extremely well made. I needed to go up half a size and get a wider fitting.

interesting. when they say 5 widths. does that include the calf size? I find it a PITA getting boots to fit my big (fat?) calves. so much so, ive switched to ankle boots as its less of a nightmare.

I'm not sure about calf width. I went to the factory to try some on.

In winter I wear my cycling roubaix thermal cycling tights under my textile winter lined trousers, nice and warm. Likewise my Assos Winter Windstopper jersey is my second layer in winter. Not bulky and it is tight fitting so I can get other layers over the top of it.

What hand guards do you use? I have Oxford muffs and find they press onto the levers at high speed or on particularly windy days. I was looking at ways to prevent this and Hand guards seem a good idea.

I got them tomorrow deefer when he was breaking a fazer for a song but they have no brand name. On ebay search for universal handguard - the bikeit ones for £20 look very similar but any bark guards would keep the muffs off the levers

I have ordered these. I reckon they will work.

My choice for mid winter riding - heated oxford grips, handguard, fleece lined muffs and summer gloves. The handguard keep the muffs off the controls and the muffs keep the rain and windchill off the lot. Ridden 100 miles in sub zero temp and hands felt toasty. I got a heated vest last winter in he sales for keeping my core warm but the I'm too fond to find the cage these days to spend long on the bike in the snow.

I've got my third set of PR2s on my 600 Fazer. I can get a tad over 7k out of a rear before it has got down to the 1 mm mark on the rear. The front has more life but I always change in pairs. I'm fairly 'spirited' in my riding. There's no way I could get 10k plus out of a set of tyres unless they were made of rock.
