FZS600 Fazer / Re: Tyre recommendation
« on: 20 March 2024, 06:59:05 am »
Tyres are like baby nappies - have you noticed how the new ones are dryer than the old (cheaper) ones - are they saying the old ones were crap ( forgive the pun ) same with bike tyres "our most grippyest yet out performs this or that - so you are saying your old cheaper ones were crap then  :rolleyes I went for the metzler ones precisely because they did not last as long as others. :D

My last front tyre was a Michelin PR3, and i must say that it was great in ALL weathers, and served me well for a long time too. That's important for me as i ride all year round in anything the sky can chuck at me so grip is a massive priority.
I had a PR4 fitted on the rear a few years ago and a week afterwards i got caught out in what i can only describe as a blizzard and as the tyre was brand new, plus i had no history of using that particular model, i really got a bot worried. By the time i got home i looked like a snowman, with about 5 inches of snow compacted above my visor too, but the tyres held up remarkably well in very bad conditions.

A few years before i misread what i was buying (from a company abroad) online and bought a rear Michelin Power 5, but after looking at reviews it made sense to just give it a go as they were all good and i could not be arsed with the thought of sending it back, and it's been fine so no harm done.

And the latest front tyre i got, a Michelin Road 6, took ages at the time to turn up due to being on pre-order and a lack of stock everywhere, but i got a good deal on it and it wasn't urgent so i just waited patiently for it to turn up months later. I've not really had the chance to review the Road 6 tyre yet due to being off road for the last 5 months due to a bad injury, but i have zero doubts that it will be extremely good.

Neither of these tyres are what i'd call inexpensive though, but if you're patient enough and spend time online looking around then eventually a good price or even a bargain will suddenly appear from nowhere, so it's always worth having a look around if you feel you may need a tyre in say 6 months or so.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: 1999 FZS 600 - Low RPM bog down, ideas?
« on: 02 March 2024, 08:06:22 am »
Make sure the bike is set to around 1250rpm once it's warm, it might be a bit low, especially in cold weather.
I'd check the TPS as well, as your symptoms are similar to a faulty one, or one that's possibly in the early stages of going bad. Only takes a minute and worth ruling out.
If you use a hose again to clean soap off the bikes engine it's worth warming the bike up and leaving it ticking over as you're doing so to avoid water getting into unwanted areas.

Standard length dog bones are 140mm from centre hole to centre hole, will it really make that much of a difference altering them by only 2mm?  :look

Make sure you get the oil level correct.
The forks without adjusters on the top take more oil than ones that do have them.
The air gap is the easier way to get the equal levels right on both sides.
I personally prefer 15W fork oil instead of the standard 10W, i found it a lot more stable.

98/99 models (without fork adjusters on top):
475cc oil 121mm air gap

00-03 models (with fork adjusters on top):
465cc oil 132mm air gap

My bike is a 2000 model but i swapped my forks with earlier model ones without the adjusters, so i have to remember to put the correct amount in each time.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Starting issue 🤦
« on: 16 January 2024, 06:33:18 am »
Am I right in thinking that your bike turned over normally but wouldn’t fire up with this duff starter relay?

Thanks for the reply!

It was unknowingly breaking apart, so it started misbehaving at first, mainly with trouble starting, then i was on my way to work and everything electrical cut out. But this was during cold weather too, so if the battery is low when when sets in that can cause starting issues too, but i wouldn't have guessed the starter relay to be honest, even more so as it had recently been replaced.
I had replaced it, but bought a cheap one that just fell apart, which i found weird as it doesn't even move anywhere the way it sits beside the battery?
Not something i had much knowledge of though, i must've just bought the first one i saw online.
Spent more money on another new one and got it delivered very quickly to the bike shop who got it up and running straight away for me, as my bike is my only transport.

G'Day Mate  :lol Sorry cant help with track bikes but there are some on here who can help. Also  "Fazer which has been stripped of its fairings and headlight" In the UK we generally call that a bike that has been crashed  :D
Search Track Day and member agricola as I think they have done a lot in this area

Yes, I take mine onto the track several times a year (as often as I can afford). Mine is the FZ6 S2 model, so later than your FZS600. Mine is currently my only bike, so has to double up for road use too, but I have modified the bike as follows:

Scorpion decat link pipe and twin tailpipes
Hydraulic clutch conversion
Gear indicator
Power Commander 5 and Dyno setup
Crash bungs/frame sliders
One tooth down on the front sprocket (track use only)
Brake lever guard (compulsory in the UK for track riding)

As for the FZS600 on track, Ive never seen one on track, but there are videos on youtube of them. One point to remember though, is that you can take most any bike to a trackday within reason and if its in good enough shape. You dont have to spend money on them. You dont need slick tyres, fancy levers, lap timers etc. I'm sure that some of the boxeye owners on here may also advise you that K&N air filters may require some serious fettling on the carberetors to get the fuelling right. At this stage , my advice would be, get the bike running smoothly as it is now, and in good order because ridden hard on track puts demands on suspension/tyres/engine /rider etc. Do a trackday or two, then think about what you want to do with the bike to improve it for the track, or wether you think another machine would be better for what you want. Before you go on tarck, change the oil and filter, coolant, brake fluid, and the front fork oil. Ensure that the rear shock is in working order and tyres are modern and up to the task. Let us know how you get on, its blisteringly good fun

K&N just pops straight in and tends to improve things immediately, in my opinion.
Balancing the carbs would sweeten things out, but not a necessity, as long as the bike is generally in good shape.

That’s a shame but totally understandable. I think facebook is responsible for the demise for many forums, which I suppose is just a reflection of modern times. Even this forum is far less active than when I joined only 7 years ago, but possibly folk have just moved on to a newer model of bike.

Could it also be that it's far less active due to the age of the bikes and pretty much everything has been covered in one way or another?
So you can do a search and browse the forum for mechanical issues over many years and someone would've already asked the question, with hopefully a resolution to read as well?

« on: 28 September 2023, 04:02:18 pm »
Is the clutch adjusted properly from the bottom end first, then tweaked at the top? And as unfazed suggests, lubricating the bearings in the sprocket cover with grease can make things a lot smoother. It's not an obvious thing to do but worthwhile.

How old is the cable? Maybe that's on its way out?

Not sure if I mentioned this before on here because I told loads of people?
But I got in the passenger side of my mums car a while back and asked her how/why her phone number was on the cars clock?
And by pure chance it was her mileage!  :lol

The exact digits, or most of the first part anyway.

My Moto GP can that I have on at the moment is sold as road legal, has the proper markings too, but is loud with the baffle in, and stupidly loud with the baffle out.

Got an MOT advisory once but he hadn't seen the markings.
I've saved the website page on my phone now in case anyone questions it.

I've tried it without the baffle before but suddenly became "that" person that everyone looks round at as you approach them. Way too much attention for my liking, plus the noise can get a bit tedious too.

General / Re: Pink lights
« on: 12 September 2023, 08:10:26 pm »
Quoting from the MOT Inspection Manual:

Headlamps’ colour must be one of the following:

    white
    yellow
mainly white light with a blue tinge

If a motorcycle is fitted with front position lamps, they can emit one of the following:

    white light
    amber light
mainly white light with a blue tinge

Rear position lamps must be red.

So these would be illegal, also imagine everyone having their own favourite colours on the front of their bike, it would look a road full of Xmas trees!

Of course I am not talking about a free for all  :rolleyes - I am talking about a law change requiring new bikes to be fitted with the pink colour DRL then all older bikes can add the CORRECT colour LEDs if they like.

If I want a bike with pink lights on I'll go to Hamleys.
But they ain't going anywhere near my Fazer.  :look

Don't forget the 0% ethanol at Esso is only in certain counties, not nationwide. From memory Hampshire, Sussex,Kent,Surrey,Essex are ok maybe Devon but not Cornwall. A definitive list was posted quite a while back.

I guess that also covers all pumps for them then by displaying "up to 5%" (E5)

Sounds about right :thumbup

Looking on the Esso website, it more or less states that from this month there will be added Ethanol at all pumps for the Supreme 99.  :thumbdown

V Power still has Ethanol in it. If you haven't tried it before ESSO Supreme 99 has zero Ethanol in it.
They have to put an E5 sticker on the pump, but it actually means "up to 5%", it's a legal thing.

Never been a fan of Redex, only stuff I'll use maybe once a year is STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner.

If you're using 99 RON fuel regularly though you shouldn't really need to use it anyway?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Horrible Noise Under Acceleration.
« on: 29 August 2023, 06:04:07 pm »
Just a suggestion, but needs care and two people when doing it.Try simulating acceleration with the bike of the centre stand foot on the brake and bike in whatever gear it sounds worse in open the throttle a bit that will put pressure on the bearing and allow you to locate wher the noise is coming from.Anytime i have had to do this it is on a lift tied down

If you're gonna do this it might be worth seeing if the noise can be recorded in case it becomes obvious to the right ears.
Maybe put a video on YouTube so it can be viewed and listened to if you manage to recreate the sound.

Have an update on this.

I just phoned TfL...in India...and they checked my Registration and said it is showing up as exempt.

Apparently they are doing major maintenance to their website in preparation for tomorrow so it is not functioning correctly today.

Cutting it a bit fine I reckon, this should've all been sorted out ages ago.  :thumbdown

General / ULEZ -TfL Drive app
« on: 28 August 2023, 01:40:53 pm »
Just a word of caution.
When you get your bike modded to pass the ULEZ emissions they tell you to download the TfL Drive app which you can then enter your Reg. Number and it will say "Nothing To Pay -Exempt"

Well, lo and behold, that app has crashed, and sends you in a loop for a software update that doesn't exist.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that never worked.

I've seen it myself that my bike is exempt and have the Dyno records, but when I tried on a different website it takes my bike as standard and says It is NOT exempt.

I'm sure it will be okay, but I better not get a fine through the post, because I will not be impressed.

Although my mate just told me all the cameras on the main road near where I live have had the cables cut.

Ignore the the brake caliper comment.   They will just bind or tick, excessive brake dust, you'll feel resistance/loss of performance and possible blueing of the disc/s in extreme cases.  What you're describing is drive/transmission issues.

:agree (for now) as the OP has said at a constant speed the noise isn't there , just when accelerating. If it was the calliper the noise would potentially be different as speed increases but wouldn't stop when you stop accelerating.

As the noise appears to only be there as speed is being increased, you need to look at things that are only affected by increased load. Chain, sprockets, output shafts and alignment of all of these things (wheel alignment). Looking at brakes would be VERY low on the list.

Would take seconds to check them out and eliminate them though, no harm done?

Check the front lay shaft bearing for play/noise.  These can and do wear/dry out mainly due to overtightening the drive chain.

It's also possible one or more of the gearbox bearings has had it.

Check the wheel alignment, the rear sprocket carrier bearing, rear wheel bearings these can dry out with no play.  Also check every link in the chain, then check swing arm and shock linkages.

Erm, excuse me?
We don't know what's wrong yet,  including you, so how about any idea is a possibility, and appreciated, eh?

Seeing as we're no wiser, what about the front brake calipers?
If they were seized up your pads might be worn to the metal, holding the bike back and causing the grinding sound?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: HORRIBLE NOISE UNDER ACCELERATION
« on: 20 August 2023, 09:52:17 am »
Now i'm thinking that you just need to properly adjust your clutch cable, from the bottom end first, then tweak at the top. Only takes a minute to do with the correct tools (buy yourself a deep offset ring spanner)
Is the cable very old, maybe it's time for a new one?

And if you ever put the bike into gear on the centre stand the chain will always jump about due to wheel momentum trying to overtake the engine speed.
If you VERY GENTLY use the throttle the engine will then pull the chain and wheel and smooth things out.
