Nice looking bike.

Cheers.

I still have a soft spot for my gen 1 and wish I had not sold it mainly because I made it so special, but the latest crop of bikes are in a  different league when it comes to performance.

Just finished working on an old TDM850, which was running but cutting out when hot and would not restart until it cooled down.
Everything seemed ok and we both reckoned it was most likely tight clearances on the valves.

After an age stripping it to get at the valves, we discovered two of the six inlets were way out, one was .10mm and the other was 0.08mm whereas the mimimum clearance is 0.15mm.
Cam sprockets lined up and locked on to the chain with cables ties. Tensioner off, Cam spockets off, cam out and  a few shim swaps later we were left with a 186 shim. My friend spent 30 min with wet and dry paper to bring a 186 shim down to 170. Put it in place, bucket and cam back in, cam sprockets on, timing checked tensioner back in. 4 rotations of the crank. and the two dodgy clearances back in the ,middle of the tolerances at 0.18mm :woot

Put the kettle on and had tea, the rest can wait until tomorrow, hope that was the problem :rolleyes

We are still waiting for a TPS for the TDM900 to come, a freebie from Yamaha because it was part of the dodgy TPS recall which was never done.

Symptoms were erratic running at 3 to 4000 revs and cutting out intermittently. TPS tested and showed to going open circuit around 1/4 throttle which would correspond to 3 to 4000 revs

All in all a good evens work.
Arrived home to find a old Power washer in my driveway with a note, not working think its a dodgy switch, Paul.
Roll on tomorrow evening  :)

I do love all these Tuonos  :)

Don't know if I'll ever be in a position to have one myself (I'd like to), but I wonder how the V4 compares with the older V2? The 4s look nicer imo, but I wonder which would be the most engaging to ride?

V4 wins hands down. :)  Better handling, lighter, smaller, better brakes, sounds better, looks better, with tuning both bikes are excellent, but you can get 160 hp at the back wheel of the v4 with a simple ecu reflash and probably 135 hp with the later v2

What about the character of the V4 vs V2 engines? I've never had either configuration, but have always wanted to try a big sporty V twin. I'm sure either one would have sufficient power for my tastes, bearing in mind I find the power of my Ivanised Fazer to be enough?

V2's tend to have more midrange and less top end than inline 4's, they are quite commonly lumpy in the lower revs with sometimes snatchy throttle (Depends on the model) A V4 is like a cross between a v2 and an inline 4, as it tends to have similar bottom end, a little less midrange Than a v2, more midrange than an inline 4 and again depends on the model will have either more or less top end :)  Hope that helps.

Probably not  :lol
I might have been able to stretch to a V2 financially, but not a V4  :(

Never mind, my questions were more from curiosity than anything. Thanks for answering  :thumbup

The v2 is still a brilliant bike but you either love v twins or hate them. I have had several. Aprilia falco I liked, 650 v strom I liked, 1000 v strom I hated,  sv 650 was ok, both tuonos I like for different reasons - gen 1 for brutal midrange, gen 2 for smoother  power delivery and less aggressive throttle.
If it's broken, it's not fixed.

I had an SV650, but it's not in the same league as the kind of litre V twins I'm thinking about. I wish I could stretch to the V4 Tuono though. When I was still living down in Oxfordshire, several times I stood and drooled over one at Blade's in Swindon. Maybe I would find the grunt of the V2 a bit too brutal nowadays.

The v2 needs to be driven with the head. It's not really a bike you nimble along on, which you can do with the fazer.
If it's broken, it's not fixed.
