Cross contamination....I mean compatibility
« on: 04 March 2024, 12:54:02 pm »
Wondering if any parts from other models are easily compatible with each other?

From my other post about the 'starter cut off' - found that it's the ignition switch at fault - it has led me to confusion and frustration trying to find the correct replacement part.
My switch (2002 fzs600) has the 7 wires (5+2) but all I see are ones for up to 2001, or ones with every year listed, but with 6 wires (4+2)

I've seen a couple posts on here about Foxeye/Boxeye (???) and a mention that the 2001/02 fzs1000 ignition switch is the same.

Seeing the official Yamaha parts catalogue says they are "unavailable",  is there another option apart from converting my 7 wire to a 6 wire which I'm not sure I have the necessary patience to do?
I'm getting kind desperate as bike has been off road for too long and I need to get it sorted for transport.

IIRC, the change just involves joining two wires together but may be as "difficult" as cutting the connector blocks off the old and new switches and just using some connectors to join the old connector block to the new switch wires - someone has provided you with the full details already. Should be no more than 15 minutes more time than simply plugging in the right one.

The only other option would be to speak to someone like Fazer Chris on the faceache sites and see if he has a 2nd hand one with a key.
Another ex-Fazer rider that is a foccer again

I did a quick image search, and it seem the FZS 1000 switch looks the same, the only difference is the type of connector, but this is the easiest problem to solve. The harder part is this switch isn't available anymore...I simply bought a cheap switch from china, rewired it to match, and that's it.

The 01/ 02 1000 does indeed have a 5 + 2 configuration, whether they're are the same, I don't know they have different Yam part No's.
but why bother 02 600 unit is available here

These ignition switches definitely not available, I'm afraid. That CMSNL page says: "Product is not available, add it to the watch list and receive a notification if it becomes available again." The only chance to obtain a new one is to find some old stock somewhere.

Email them and ask. I've used them in the past many times and they've always got things you might have to wait.

Failing that you or find someone who can modify as pointed out earlier.
