FZS600 Fazer / Top speed on a Fazer?
« on: 26 February 2013, 07:49:52 pm »
Hi all,

After a heated debate with a non-biker friend of mine, I checked the MCN - they say that the top speed for an unrestricted Fazer is 135mph.

I've had my bike up to 110mph indicated (in controlled conditions, Mr Plod!), and I've only got 33hp!! Due to heavier oil, I now only get 100mph, but still! I'm guessing 150 is doable on the full 95 horses.

What's the fastest you've been on an FZS600?

FZS600 Fazer / Lights dead, help!
« on: 24 February 2013, 09:36:53 pm »
Evening all.

I have a strange problem with my '01 FZS. The tail lights don't come on, whereas the front headlamp and hazards work fine.

I had the bike in bit earlier, trying to source the problem. I think it comes from the ignition, the circuit to the ignition connector to the rear bulbs is OK (as are all fuses). Has anyone else had a problem like this, or know any potential solution? Problem is, I'm now confined by daylight, or risk having an unpleasant conversation with Mr Plod!

Any help appreciated!

FZS600 Fazer / Facepalm.
« on: 15 February 2013, 03:34:59 pm »
I was bored, so went out for a little spin on the Fazer. Going down the road, I heard a weird buzzing I knew shouldn't be there. I pulled over for a look, but couldn't see much. I headed home, parked up, and the bike cut out when I stopped... OK, that was weird. Now, the buzzing was coming on with the ignition on too! I panicked, got the bike to start, and headed towards town and the bike shop. I hadn't gone 300 metres when the bike died completely. So I pushed it to the side of the road, and tried to work out what the hell was wrong.

Just as I was preparing myself to push the damn thing the 2 miles to the bike shop, I suddenly had a thought. I'd lifted the tank up whilst failing to get at the spark plugs to clean them earlier that day... Surely I hadn't....

I had. The fuel tap was off. I switched it on, and the bike started immediately. So I headed home feeling very silly. Just proof that the simplest things can cock you up! Thank God I hadn't done that on the A1M (I'm off to Bury St Edmunds for the weekend). Breaking down in the Hatfield Tunnel would not have been fun!

General / The Lord's Prayer - biker edition!!
« on: 10 February 2013, 11:59:28 am »
Pinched from a French Forum, translated and tweaked:

Our Father
Who rides a cycle
Hallowed be thy name
Thy engine rev,
Thy foot pegs rub
On the A roads as on the twisties
Give us each day our daily hairpin
Forgive us our stupidities
As we forgive those who
Make us drop the bike
Lead us not into spilt diesel
And deliver us from gravel
For thine is the torque,
The power and the braking
For ever and ever

On the M1

Just an early heads up for those already loooking at their summer calenders (and in this weather, can't blame you!)

There is a two day event in central Brittany called "La Madone des Motards". Every year, for the 14th and 15th of August, 20,000+ French bikes & bikers descend upon the hamlet of Porcaro. They come to remember friends and loved ones who have passed away in the previous year, and to put their lives under the protection of Mary (that part *is* mainly aimed at Catholics, although all faiths; or lack thereof; are welcome). Of course, it's also a damn good bike meet, with a rock concert on in the evening of the first day, and an 80km rideout on the second day.

I went in 2012 on my 125 Varadero, and was deeply moved by it. I think it's a really worthwhile event, and (time willing) will be going to in this year. This is why I'm posting up now. I'm considering organising a week-long trip round Brittany and Normandy, taking in the Madone event, and also having a bit of fun in France.

Obviously, all the masses, etc are said in French. However, I'm hoping that organisers will send me copies of the orders of service and info sheets in advance so I can translate them. Regardless of placement, I can do that. I also hope to get the event publicised by MCN, get a few Brits over. When I was there, the only English bike there that I could find was mine. That, and a solitary Irish bike.

If anyone wants more info on the event, just ask below, I'll try to answer!

To quote the official motto: "Remember them, be careful!"

For Sale & Wanted / For Sale - FZS 600 (not mine!!)
« on: 23 January 2013, 01:54:39 pm »
Just thought I'd pop a note down - there's an FZS 600 down my local bike shop that's been there for a couple of months. It's silver, black and red. Has a Scottoiler, new chain and sprockets, and tyres in good nick. The dealer is asking £1350, but is certainly open to good offers.

The bike shop is Twist & Go in Hatfield (Herts), 01707 274457

« on: 23 January 2013, 11:10:56 am »
I feel really thick now, but I need to ask: How can you tell which slider goes on which knee? Unfortunately, mine aren't conveniently marked L and R! Any advice on how to distinuish them?

Thanks!

FZS600 Fazer / Knee down?
« on: 20 January 2013, 09:43:47 pm »
Hello fellow Foccers!

I've just got some replacement trousers, so now I can try to get my knee down! Previous trousers were textiles, so no sliders. However, I now want to give it a shot (well, once this bloody snow clears!  :wall ).

I've been reading plenty of articles and watching Youtube vids, but thought I'd ask here: a) what speed is right on a mid-size / largish roundabout? and b) I'm a bit worried about the exhaust, is that safe and OK at those angles? I have a stock exhaust, and am 6ft 3.

Any advice / input would be appreciated, thanks!  :)

FZS600 Fazer / Top box 'n' racks
« on: 25 November 2012, 09:58:36 pm »
Hi all!

I plan on fitting a topbox to my Fazer (carting stuff home, and keeping the laptop safe from english weather!), but I cannot find any cheap racks for the bike. The cheapest ones are Rentec, but they don't take boxes. I'm thinking of building my own (well, ask the techies at Uni to help me with it) based off the Givi rack.

Also, how does the Fazer like topbox? I mean, obviously handling goes to pot, but how bad is it? I ask because the last big lot of luggage I had on my Honda Varadero made it feel like a 2-wheeled tractor!

Thanks!

FZS600 Fazer / Tyre time
« on: 22 November 2012, 11:57:20 pm »
I know this is probably a recurring thread in various flavours, but I thought I'd ask anyway:

The tyres on my Fazer are (for want of a better phrase) dead. Unevenly worn, bald patches, cracks - you name it, they have it! Problem is, I am completely and utterly skint (will need to borrow money to replace them. Hell, will need to borrow money for food!!). I have Continental RoadAttack2s fitted front & rear, plan to replace both.

I've found Maxxis Supermax touring tyres at £152 bundle price. Could you please a) tell me what your views are on the Maxxis (and which tyres are best for the Fazer), and b) if you can find cheaper for a (literally) starving student!!

Thanks!

FZS600 Fazer / Headlamps - improvements?
« on: 21 November 2012, 11:43:04 pm »
Hi!

I was wondering if anyone had found a good way to improve the headlamps on the  square eye Fazer (without going full Foxeye)? Back on the Varadero 125 forum I used to be on, a few people had installed HIDs to their bikes to improve the awful performance from the stock setup. Has anyone done anything similar to the Fazer?

I plan on rebuilding the headlamp assembly over Christmas, but would appreciate any advice from those who've been there and done it!

Cheers!

FZS600 Fazer / Luggage from a Fazer 1000 on an FZS600?
« on: 20 November 2012, 02:17:58 pm »
Hi all,

I've found a rather nice set of hard luggage for a 2003 Fazer 1000, complete with rack on the interwebs, and was wondering whether this would fit my 2001 FZS600?

The ad says they're made by Krauser.

Many thanks!

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: a mudguard
« on: 14 November 2012, 07:22:14 am »
Hi

I'm on the lookout for a black mudguard for a 2001 600. The previous owners seemed to be keen on dropping my bike; the indicators are quite roughed up, and part of the front mudguard's been hacked off. And the mud in my face is getting irritating.

Thanks!  :)

Introduction / Hello!
« on: 12 November 2012, 11:22:42 am »
Hi!

I picked up my Fazer on Saturday from HGB in Ruislip. Only had it 2 days, already loving it!

I am an 18yr old engineering student at the University of Hertfordshire, but live in Northern France (hence why I traded in a Vardero 125 for the FZS).

The bike is a black 2001 FZS600, and goes pretty well (though I've had to have it restricted. Dang it). It's got a belly pan, hugger and part of the front mudguard chopped off (will be fixing that soon).

So yeah... Hello!  :)
