I bought a seat on here that had already been modified like this (I believe raised by 50mm). Definitely helps with the knee bend. I'm planning to sell the fazer in the spring so I would sell the seat if you are interested. PM me if you want more details.

Decided that I'm going to sell - price reduced to £2490.

Kebab19 – thanks. I have tried adjustable foot rests that gave about an inch drop along with an air cushion on the seat. It does help, but my problem is that serious painful cramps set in after an hour or so.  Its now at the stage where I’m using the bike less as a result. I had a seat on a Triumph Explorer 800 at the weekend and it started me thinking that it was maybe now is the time to part with the Fazer – I’m 60 next year and want a bike I keep riding for a few years yet. Any suggestions on how to make the Fazer more comfortable are very welcome as I would rather keep it. I can set the footpegs with up to 40mm offset, but that means the gearshift and brakes are out of adjustment range.

I’m reluctantly considering parting with my Fazer 1000. I’ve owned this bike from new but I’m getting to an age where the knee bend is just too much and is becoming a deterrent to riding. It must be one of the best available at its age having only covered 17,300 miles and rarely been out in the wet. Pictures show the condition, here’s a summary of its features;
Perfect running order (as you would expect)
1 owner (me) from new (2005)
Full monty Ivan’s kit fitted by Mike
Blue (the later darker blue)
17, 300 miles
Carbon Can exhausts (std can available if required)
AIS removed
R6 shock (around 5k miles on this)
Venhill brake lines
R1 Shift mod (plus std parts)
Heated grips
Hugger
Mirror extenders
Exup valve maintained regularly from new!
Yamaha engine bars
Gear position indicator
Alarm
MOT till May 2019

On the negative side, there is a small crack on the left hand side infill panel and a slight scuff on the alternator cover.

I’m looking for £2700 or very near offer. Bike is located near to Glasgow. Note that bike is cuurently fitted with Garmin satnav mount that will be removed prior to sale.

It appears in you case since the Neutral light works and the bike will only start in neutral with the clutch pulled in would appear that diode 4 is not knackered.  :)

Excellent write up though ...

"So yours wont start with side stand down in gear clutch in ??" - that's correct. Not only will it not start, engine will cut out if bike put into gear with sidestand down - clutch of course is "in" when you drop it into gear. As BBrown says its a safety feature on all modern bikes.

In neutral fzs1000 starts with sidestand down without touching the clutch (at least mine does and has done from new).  Will cut out if put into gear with sidestand down as you say. Will start only start in gear with sidestand up and clutch in.

Are the disconnected alarm wires at the standard alarm connector? If so there are two pairs that have to be connected (looped). These would be cut and fed into an alarm. One pair inhibits the ignition circuit, the other inhibits the starter circuit. I'd check those first. If those are ok then its onto the relay/diode assembly behind left side panel.

With everything connected are you able to probe the voltages at the rectifier connector? If so what do you get between red and black with the engine stopped and with it running? What is the a.c. voltage between the white wires when everything connected with the engine running.

Did you measure the 1.8v with the rectifier disconnected from the battery - not a good idea, you might damage the rectifier.

Sounds a bit on the low side. I assume you are measuring with the rectifier disconnected (you should be). The three voltages should be the same, and up around 50V when you rev the bike to 5000rpm. I'd take the cover off and see if any of the coils look black or burned.

1. Do the dynamic test as recommended by Paul. If you get at least 30v (make sure you use a.c. range on your meter) at fast idle, increasing voltage with revs. You can then more or less assume stator and rotor are ok i.e. the generator is ok.
2. If batteries ok, then its either the rectifier/regulator at fault or the connections between. Can you measure the battery voltage between the red and black wires at the recitifier? The red wire connects to the battery positive and the black wire to ground.

Do you have a multimeter? Check resistance of stator windings. Should be around 0.3 Ohms between each of the three white wires and no continuity (open circuit) between each white wire and ground. If not then change the stator.
