Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Clutch arm moving up?
« on: 08 April 2019, 01:08:40 pm »
The shaft is held in with a circlip, it could have come off allowing it to move up.  You can take the cover off and check

As above. The occasional click could be something to do with a circlip in amongst the clutch drum and other parts in the case. Certainly wants fixing before the clutch lever comes right out leaving you stranded or worse still something more major than a circlip drops us down amongst the clutch basket.

THANKS!

THANKS!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Clutch arm moving up?
« on: 05 April 2019, 06:57:44 am »
My clutch arm seems to be working it's way out of the engine. See photos - check out the spring, which used to be quite "compressed". Any ideas? Have I got to remove clutch cover to sort this? Engine is also making occasional click whilst ticking over but I'm having a hard time tracing this and wonder if they might be related. Bike has done 30,000 miles.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ignition advancer
« on: 23 June 2018, 05:02:20 pm »
I had my mechanic fit one whilst bike was in for first major service (at 30k, ahem).

I love the bike now, so much so I've left my Z1000SX in the garage this year, despite it being more "convenient" for my touring actiities.

I think it pulls a lot better from low down, although in fairness, this is in conjunction with Super Unleaded.

It did seem to run better on the Super Unleaded before, but since the advancer was fitted, it has felt a bit rougher on the couple of normal unleaded tankfuls I've used.

A satisfied customer  :) :) :)

With my own adaptor pipe and a Leo Vince can originally intended for a GSXR600, my Fazer makes a lovely crackling on the over-run.

But if I remove the air-induction system, won't the crackling stop?

yours, waiting to be convinced that AIS removal is a benefit......

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Brown gunk leaking from carb
« on: 04 July 2017, 09:17:22 am »
It's probably the residue of ethanol attack of your carb seals. It was previously obvious on my No1 carb, before BSD changed all my carb seals ( internal and external - which were all fucked) and reset the carbs - which had been over-adjusted by a German Yam dealer, to compensate for the variable fuelling. (i'd ended up with a litre of unburnt fuel in my engine.) This problem will be getting worse now as the Gen1 bikes get older because ethanol content is rising.

Damper on mine, fitted purely for cosmetic reasons........recent track day had to actually wind it on a couple of turns 'cos of wibbly-wobbly under hard acceleration  :lol

Dude, how low have you dropped the top yoke?
Have you run it like that without the damper at all?
I think I've dropped mine 10mm so far, but want to try another 5mm, but not sure I want to run a damper - never needed one on my 97 SRAD and they're flighty beasts ;-)

Hi, sorry to be coming late to the party.

Thinking about removing my AIS from 2004 Fazer.

I have previously had a Leo Vince can on this bike and I loved the popping and banging I used to get on closing the throttle.
I bought a MIVV for it, and the Leo Vince went back onto my Gixxer. The popping pretty much stopped, but the MIVV looked better.

However, I'm looking at putting the Leo Vince back on the Fazer.

Question is, if I remove the AIS, will the popping and banging stop?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 1 brakes
« on: 22 October 2016, 03:33:44 pm »
Depends on how badly your pistons have seized. I had a load of old SRAD calipers and those Sealey pliers didn't have enough leverage to even turn the pistons, never mind extract them, and the serrations on the tips (that are supposed to grip the inside face of a piston) just smoothed off. NOT impressed. I think someone needs to make a set of mole-grip type locking pliers.
Admittedly, these were old seized pistons, but just goes to show even special tools sometimes DON'T get the job done. In hindsight, I'd buy a set of those expanding piston pullers, but you'd have to split the calipers to use them.

Meantime, I made a brake rig out of a SRAD rear brake and reservoir and goodridge line, and I hydraulically pumped all the pistons out.

OK, how do you know?

i bet you ohlins don't actually make their own springs.
however i bet their QC is a damn sight more stringent than k-tech..............g'wan, ask me how i know.

« on: 06 October 2016, 01:16:42 am »
Before my FZS1000 was Full-Monty-ed, that used to surge on light throtttle openings under load but just above tickover - one of the reasons, I wanted the carbs sorting. Awful throttle response for such a refined/civilised bike.

14
Yup- due to the age of the bikes, I'd have to mention ethanol attack of the carb o-rings and valve seats. Amazed thats not already here????

Caused me a lot of grief on trip to Black Forest. It started playing up on a tankful of Euro-ethanol shit, dropping onto 3 cylinders on the autobahn. The boys didn't know i was in trouble so i kept it pinned to try to keep up. Then when the 4th kicked back in now and again, it was interesting to say the least.
But eventually dropped onto 2 just as we got to hotel. Seemed like the 2/3 cylinder coil had gone down to me.

German garage got the bike going again (and hired me an MT09 - top bombing), but as I still wasn't happy, I booked it into BSD in Peterboghorror who finally nailed the problem. Ethanol rot of the carb rubber. Replaced all the seals, dynoed, set-up and now has a solid and genuine 126 rear wheel BHP and a completely linear throttle response.
When Mike fitted my full Monty, he mentioned it was a common problem, now worsened by increasing levels of ethanol.
If you buy one and they haven't already been replaced, you gotta budget for this, surely?

« on: 06 October 2016, 12:46:05 am »
Thanks for all the help and guys. Due to the impending Welsh trip, on Tuesday morning, I contacted Abacus Alarms who flogged me one of their Bypass Plugs. Removed my paper-clip, plugged this in - it runs (thank fuck). They also offered me a replacement META357 for £120 but with the expense of the trip this weekend, that was a non-starter at the moment. The 357 is available on eBay for £99 anyway, and can be plugged in  later. Thanks again - REALLY  :thumbup

BREXIT should sort that out - I wonder if that means we don't have to have their fucking compulsory ABS now as well??

I Knew EU regs had to be involved in that somewhere :'(
Thanks

You gotta be checking the plugs first.

I had a misfire on my GSXR6, but couldn't find which cylinder was the culprit.

Lifted the plugs and one of the set WASN'T that lovely dry sandy brown. One of my coils was going down - swapped it - SORTED.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / HELP! META M357T-V2
« on: 03 October 2016, 07:01:33 pm »
Hi, all you FOC-cers :)

I've had what I thought was the well-documented problem, with my META M357T-V2 (NOT V2-1) internal battery dying.

I've seen all the previous posts plus similar ones from other forums.

Wanting to remove the immobiliser temporarily, I've tried to pin-out the plug(s) with paper clips.
as per photo found elsewhere on here (attached for reference).

The starter motor is now turning over, but the bike is making no attempt to fire.

Seems like the ECU pin-out isn't working.

I've seen on other forums (and our own FZ6) that there are different pin-outs for different bikes - is it possible I've got the wrong 2 connections for mine? 2004 FZS1000 (Mk1) by the way.

Sorry for the urgency but the bike is my only form of transport here at the moment - my other bikes have now been put up for winter and are in fact parked 170 miles away. Oh and I'm booked on a Welsh riding weekend THIS weekend. DOH!

PS - also, I've found a magnet (for a reed switch) which was glued to my seat, and the matching switch fastened inside the frame.
What does this do? I assumed it put the alarm in "service" mode. Coincidentally, the magnet had fallen off the seat but for the time being, I
have taped it to the reed switch, so it thinks the seat is in place.

Thanks, in anticipation. Dave

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Which Tires for a 2004 Fazer 1000
« on: 20 September 2016, 11:55:09 pm »
Bridgestone T30 EVO's on my Fazer Thou, although I've not tried PR4's yet, which were awesome on my Z1000SX.
Both were great in the wet.
My only complaint, T30 front whitelined badly when worn down, probably beyond the point where most people would replace them anyway.

Can I suggest it's probably the tyre profile - the PR4's probably different from whatever you've had before.
The 50 or 55 number just says it's the same height - but the shape of the profile is probably different. I'd been using BT20's on my GSXR6 - putting it on Michelin Pilots transformed the handling - it dropped soooooo much more easily into bends. Highly recommended for SRADs.

My Z1000SX was great on PR4's, rock solid stable but the T30's seem to make it skittish and less stable (I have tried both in a 55 profile - up from the standard 50) whereas the T30's were awesome on my Fazer Thou - again, rock solid grip, until they got down to a couple of mm - (hen whitelined badly. That said, I've dropped the Fazer's yokes 10mm so it actually steers now, and have an R6 shock and Maxton forks.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Dyno Charts - Full Monty & Fuel End Can
« on: 10 July 2015, 01:28:23 pm »
Had my completely standard FZS dynoed at 126 rear wheel bhp, then had Mike fit a Full Monty, both in early 2014.

Only just got around to having it dynoed with the Ivan's kit on and a MIVV exhaust with baffle out, but somewhat disappointed to see that it was only 128bhp (based upon 140 crank bhp less correction factor).

I'm guessing the exhaust alone should have given me that :-/

Got to go back to my dyno-man, to get a rear wheel print-out, so I can overlay and compare the shape of the graphs - maybe it's filled it out elsewhere on the curve???

For certain, the Ivan's kit has made the bike MUCH more controllable - probably worth it for that alone, but even the Ivan's website says I should be getting 135 - 140bhp.

SO.......going to book it in somewhere next month to check it out and see where my missing 10 horsepower are.

When I can find the dyno graphs, I'll post them up here, but something clearly isn't right.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / HELP! Snapped EXUP bolt
« on: 19 April 2015, 10:34:05 pm »
Sorry, I only seem to be posting problems just lately  :eek

Finally bit the bullet and decided to strip out the EXUP valve for a clean and regrease.

Bearing in mind where the bolts are, soaked them in ACF50, then WD40 and left it 2 days before tackling,

All bolts came out OK, except the bottom-most bolt in the valve end plate. This was tight, so as seen elsewhere, tried tightening it slightly to crack it before loosening. Bolt seemed to move 5 degrees or so, so seemed a good idea. Gradually worked it back and forward those 5 degrees and sure enough - SNAP. Obviously made of cheese.
Anyway, who's got experience, good or bad, on getting these bastards out "in situ" ? I've successfully drilled out snapped off exhaust studs on my GPz before now, so I'm happy to try it without removing the exhaust.  What worked for you, and just as important, what didn't??? Thanks in advance.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 2 suspension linkage bolts spec???
« on: 13 April 2015, 01:32:02 am »
Only high tensile bolts should be used for suspension linkages. I'd love to use something more corrosion resistant but I'm not even sure that stainless A4 are tough enough!

Haven't I read somewhere that the EXUP servo-motor is protected from burning out, in the event of the EXUP valve seizing?

I removed the shield cover from the EXUP valve to watch it working, and it doesn't seem to be opening/closing in synch with the revs. There seems to be a bit of a delay between revving and the valve moving, plus the valve doesn't always return to the "at rest" position. I ain't disconnected the cables yet, but they seem free, and with ignition off, I seem to be able to turn the valve slightly by hand.
So I guess I've gotta clean the valve first before anything.
AS I said above, this is first time bikes been left out and everything under the seat seems tight and is corrosion free.

I'll check out the starter solenoid as suggested, but what are the symptoms of a knackered EXUP-servo motor?
