Hey all,

2001 FZS 1000

I've just replaced my exhaust valve control cables and now have a fault with my neutral light!!!

Just wondered if anyone's seen this before. It's intermittent - just occasionally, the neutral light fails to come on when it should. Most of the time it works fine.

I guess I've disturbed the circuit somehow. I've traced the sensor line through the block connector in the left-hand fairing (blue/white wire), through the block connector on the left of the seat to the bullet connector on the right of the seat (black wires) and then on to the sensor. The sensor is a bugger to locate! Eventually found it on the left rear of the engine behind the coolant tank.

Having had all those connectors apart, wiggled them and re-connected them, the fault was gone... then, on my test ride, the fault came back just briefly.

Anyone seen that before? Is there a connector on the sensor itself that I might have disturbed? Or maybe I've broken the wire where it meets the sensor while I was running the new exhaust cables into place - it was a bit tight/awkward getting them in.

Any ideas welcome.

Cheers,
Dave

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Luggage options for FZ1S - NOT Givi or Kappa
« on: 12 April 2021, 09:21:30 am »

Hey all,

I have a 2001 FZS Fazer 1000 with the Givi kit fitted and I'm very happy with it. It's not the prettiest thing ever but it doesn't stand out too bad and it gets the job done. It looks like this:

I'm looking for luggage options for a 2013 FZ1S Fazer 1000 and I'm seeing this:

Now... I understand that the tail is much shorter on the FZ1S... so that causes issues for mounting luggage... but hmmm. Well, it does look a bit like a load of scaffolding hung off the back of the bike. That's unfortunate but the big problem for me is that the black side rail that supports the top plate actually obscures the rear light! When I think about my trip back from the IoM a couple of years back, 6 hours at night in rain so heavy you couldn't see a thing... the thought of someone joining the carriageway behind me and my rear light being obscured by my luggage... Well, that's enough for me to avoid the bike altogether - if I can't fit it with a luggage system that's safe.

So my question is, are there any other luggage system options for the FZ1S?

Cheers,
Dave

General / Ever ride alone?
« on: 06 March 2020, 07:32:46 pm »
Ever thought what would happen if you ended up in a ditch unconscious out of sight?

Ha! Yeah, cheerful thought, huh? I was watching Emergency Helicopter Medics or something similar recently and an old fella did exactly that - he was there for four hours, I think it was, before he was found.

Wouldn't it be cool if you phone noticed and texted your exact location to summon help?

Anyway, I wrote this Android app for the Bloodrunners to automate controller messaging and stuff and I've extended it to do that - if you turn the tracker on it will monitor your location and if you're stationary for five minutes it will alert you to ask if you're OK. It'll ask again every minute for five minutes. If you don't respond it will text your exact location to the number you've set up.

Anyway, like I said, it's mainly for Bloodrunners but if anyone wanted to try it our for me that would be VERY helpful. It's very hard to test because every device (and GPS chip-set) behaves so differently - different accuracy, timings, reliability.

If you fancy giving it a go please do - it's called Bloodriders and it's on the app store at:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.serv.ridersapp

Just one ask from me - please let me know how you get on with it, GOOD OR BAD. Like I said, it's very difficult to test. I've tested it really just on one phone so I have no idea how well it will run on others.

If you like it post a review and tell your mates.

If you hate it tell me about it ;-)

Cheers!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Can W-rated tyres be repaired?
« on: 23 January 2020, 04:38:21 pm »
I picked up a puncture this afternoon - rear Metzeler Roadtec 01 180/55 ZR17
It's done about 2,000 miles.

The entry point is about 1cm left of the centre-line and it's on a proud part (not hidden in a tread channel). You can see a 5mm-long line where the tyre has been damaged.

The garage who fitted it says "Ooo, you can't repair W-rated tyres, no, that'll be ker-ching for a new one".

The other fella down the road says "Some manufacturers say 'No repairs' and others say 'Yeah, fine' and there's no rhyme or reason. If it's a nice neat hole like a nail has gone straight in and out then it should repair just fine. If it's more of a cut then no."

What's the deal? I'm tending toward getting a new tyre for the obvious reasons but I'm also thinking "I've had so many bike tyres repaired over the decades, are tyres suddenly not repairable any more for some reason or are people just more risk averse / grabbing?"

Has anyone had a workshop-fitted repair fail??

General / Anyone got a broken Givi Monokey pannier??
« on: 30 November 2019, 04:02:19 pm »

I've recently started volunteering with SERV (the bloodrunners) and I need to make up a board to strap the boxes on to the back of my Fazer - I have a Givi Monokey plate on there and I want to make the board up from a sheet of aluminium with angle riveted round the edge and the locating and locking bits from a pannier riveted on too so it will snap on and off the plate like a pannier.

Panniers sell on eBay for £30 but I don't really need an intact one - a smashed-up one will do fine if the locating and locking bits are salvageable.

I'm happy to pay for the bits and postage.

It has to be Monokey rather than Monolock to fit the plate.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Metal (aluminium) filler???
« on: 23 June 2019, 07:59:12 pm »

OK, so I've ordered new caps to go on the swingarm but the pivot outer was really scored and pitted on one end - it was gonna chew up the new oil seal in minutes. So I smoothed it with some sand screen (like emery cloth) but it's still not good - see photo. Is there a product I could use to fill this? I was thinking of just using body filler but I don't know if that will work well with the grease and the oil seal rubbing across it. The swingarm is aluminium so it needs to be approximately as soft as aluminium. But it's only a surface for the oil (grease) seal to seal against so it's not super-critical. I just want to get a good seal, basically. Any ideas?

Cheers

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Seized swingarm spacer off 40,000 mile bike
« on: 23 June 2019, 03:32:11 pm »

I thought I'd have the rear end out for a once-over while I was fitting a new chain and sprockets - I was expecting to find that it might need a bit of a re-grease. What I found was the swingarm spacer seized solid with corrosion (2001 bike). So solid that was actually difficult to knock the spacer out. The photo shows the worst affected end which I'm guessing was the left-hand side - I'm guessing that it was sitting in water when the bike was leant over on the side-stand.

The bearings were a nightmare to get out - I put a chisel on them but the chisel was wrecked and the bearing was entirely unmarked. But I found that the spacer itself made the best drift to knock them out with.

So if your bike's got wet much you might wanna have a little look see. New spacer, bearings and cover caps about £170 from Fowlers.

General / Ear plugs - recommendations??? Minerva any good???
« on: 17 June 2019, 10:48:36 am »

Test rode a Thruxton on Saturday - 3 hours across Essex and Suffolk. Superb. Want one.

But after the ride my ears were RINGING. So I've decided I can't get one until I've found some hearing protection that works (which means another test ride :-)
I was using the same old disposable yellow foam plugs I've been using for decades but the extra wind noise (from having no fairing, I guess) was too much for them.

I'm looking at getting the Minerva custom-made BikePlugs at £115 fitted and supplied through SpecSavers - reviews? recommendations?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Chain & sprocket recommendations
« on: 31 May 2019, 11:32:33 am »
So the trip to the Isle of Man convinced me it's time to replace the chain & sprockets. The slack isn't too big and the 10-link length isn't too big but the difference between the looser and tighter spots is big enough that at a slow cruise it slaps about horribly. Also, the rear sprocket teeth are pretty worn.

On Internet searches I'm seeing a lot of chains with split links. With a 140bhp bike I would automatically go for an endless chain. I'm gonna service all the suspension linkages while I'm at it so there's no extra work required to fit an endless chain anyway.

Do you go for a split-link chain for the FZS1000???

Also, any other advice / recommendations on product?? Replacement gotchas / tips??

I've been given some Maxton link rods which raise the back end so I'm planning to fit them too - anyone tried them?? I recently notice that the previous owner had rammed the pre-load right up to the max, presumably to improve the geometry so hopefully I can put these links in and put the pre-load back to mid-range.

Cheers!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Tweaking suspension when fully-loaded
« on: 27 April 2019, 07:26:57 pm »
Hey all,

The little Yamaha manual is pretty good on describing where the suspension controls are and how to adjust them. But it says bugger-all about what adjustments you should be looking to make for different loads.

I don't usually bother adjusting the suspension at all as it's either just me (~80Kg) or me + light luggage or me + pillion for short trips and I've never felt it warranted messing with the set-up.

But I'm planning a long trip two-up fully loaded and I'm thinking that's gotta be worth a tweak on the rear pre-load at least (as that's where most of the load will be).

But I'm not sure what else if anything is likely to need adjusting.

Front pre-load - yeah, I guess so, to firm the front up a bit, especially under braking?

Front & rear compression - maybe? Especially on the front to firm it up under braking again?

Front & rear rebound - really don't know why that would be needed!

Any advice? Any recommendations for step-by-step guides?

Cheers,
Dave

We're off on a tour soon and as we're two-up I really need to get my old 36 litre Monokey Givi panniers mounted on the Fazer (2001 FXS 1000). I really didn't think it would be difficult. Expensive maybe, but not difficult...

I did a bit of research and it looks like there's no way to mount my old Wingrack which would have been ideal but there we go.

So a couple of weeks back I ordered the side rack (PL348) from www.modulemoto.co.uk. The side-rack blurb says it must be fitted with the top rack (348FZ) so I ordered that and a top plate (M7) from www.motocard.com

All's good.

Then, yesterday, I emailed ModuleMoto to find out when the rack will arrive and they said "Oh, we don't stock them any more"... what's more, I can't find one anywhere on the web (that will ship to the UK).

So, I have a top rack and top plate on the way (which I only ordered because the side-rack PL348 requires them) but no side-rack and no way to mount my panniers on the bike!!

Does anyone know of any way to side-mount Monokey panniers on the 2001 FZS 1000?

Thanks!!

The PL349 rack seems to still be available but it looks like it doesn't fit the 2001 model. Anyone know if it can be modified to fit?

I would ask Givi but they have convinced me that they know nothing about their own products.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / How free is your front wheel?
« on: 27 October 2018, 03:36:00 pm »

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH YOUR DISCS WITHOUT CHECKING HOW HOT THEY ARE FIRST! THEY CAN GET HOT ENOUGH TO GIVE BAD BURNS!!!

(Yep, learned that one the hard way, many years ago)

I just finished cleaning up my front calipers - a job I'd done because after I replaced my tyres I noticed that the right-hand disc was getting hot and the left-hand disc wasn't.

I'm pretty happy that the brakes are in good condition but...

If I lift the front and spin the front wheel, giving it a good heft to spin it, it rotates just one full rotation. And I can hear a bit of rubbing.

Without that calipers fitted it does many rotations and is silent so I'm happy with the bearings.

On a good-distance run, finishing with some slow riding through town, when I stop the front discs are a similar temperature - warm to the touch but no where near hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold on to. On a faster run they do get hotter but still not so hot that I can't hold my fingers against them.

But I'm surprised that there is so much drag. Is that normal?

At the end of the day, it's the temperature of the discs that are the indicator if there's too much drag but I would expect the front to be a bit free-er.

Also, my rear disc gets hotter than the front discs. That's weird too, isn't it? I just put HH sintered pads in but that wouldn't explain the rear getting hotter than the front, surely??

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / General techniques: Cleaning brake pistons.
« on: 22 October 2018, 10:57:17 pm »
I've gotta share this coz I'm dead chuffed with how well it works!! Maybe it's well-known already but I'd never heard of it so here goes.

I was cleaning up my front brake calipers coz the right-hand one had started to drag a bit. Haynes has its usual text - push the pistons out a little and clean the edges up so you don't push any crap back under the seal when you push the pistons back inside the caliper. But while you can get to most of the piston edges, on some parts the clearance between the side of the piston and the caliper body is minute - maybe less than a millimeter. My brush sure wouldn't go in there! And there was plenty of crap that needed shifting. I couldn't rotate the pistons either. The technique I used was this:

Get some thin material (mine was an old shirt). Tear off a strip about 5mm wide. Use brake & clutch cleaning fluid. Thread the strip of material into the gap and work it back-and-forth round the piston. That's it - works a treat. Cleaned up the piston and the caliper body around it. Pistons pushed back into the caliper a treat. Lovely jubbly.

So like I said, maybe everyone does this already but hey, if not, give it a go next time.

General / Paint job - any recommendations?
« on: 16 September 2018, 07:03:35 pm »

I fancy having a bit of a paint job done - nothing too complicated but maybe incorporating a Union Flag or something like that. The bike is currently blue and I'd want the whole thing re-painted to a much darker colour scheme - mostly black/grey with maybe some other dark colour.

Any recommendations in the Suffolk area? Any examples you wanna post to inspire others considering it?? Typical prices?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bizarre EXUP self-test behaviour
« on: 26 April 2018, 09:08:01 pm »

Does anyone know how the self-test turns the EXUP???

I imagined it would open it right up and then close it to the 'zero'd' position - with the tabs over the hole. Mine moves it from the zero'd position even MORE closed!!! It doesn't get very far because that's as far as the valve will turn. The self-test then fails and I get the 7k error displayed.

I've taken the cables off and the valve feels free to turn. I've freed the cables up so they have decent slack and the tabs line up over the hole (zero'd).

I usually do my own work on the bike but when I went to service the valve I discovered that one of the pulley plate bolts had sheared off before I bought it and I didn't fancy trying to drill that out of there so put it in to the local mechanic. When it came back the pulley plate bolts were good and the valve serviced but I now get this 7k error. Don't ask why I'm not returning it to the mechanic - it took 6 weeks and a ton of cash last time and it's not an experience I'm in a hurry to repeat.

Anyway, I'm now wondering if I need to adjust the cables further so the valve sits rotated in a more open position so the self-test can close the valve further - currently the test is driving the valve to it's fully closed position and failing - if I adjust the cables to rotate the valve to a slightly more open position the test can then close it further like it wants to...

But is that normal - for the test to start by *closing* the valve?? Like I said, I expected it to do an open-close cycle, not close-open-close - or whatever it is supposed to do...

The servo does start to open the valve when I rev the engine up (though I don't know at what engine speed as I can't watch the pulley and the rev counter at the same time!).

BTW, thanks Yamaha for putting the servo there - I hope I never have to get it out!!! I also found that the mechanic had disconnected the electrics to the coolant filler (temperature gauge??). Ah yes, that's why I do stuff myself...

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / HELP! EXUP Nightmare
« on: 11 June 2017, 10:35:35 am »

Hey all,

I decided to service the EXUP yesterday and discovered that one of the bolts securing the cable bracket was sheared off - that'll be why the cables were loose then!

I knew the sheared bolt was a show-stopper but I thought I'd press on and see if I could do the service, reassemble and then decide what to do about it. But despite plenty of care and penetrating oil, one of the other bolts also sheared and the last one's allen head rounded out. So I now have the top two sheared off and the bottom one siezed in place without any purchase for turning it.

It's a thousand - 2001 model with 37k miles.

So it looks to me like the whole exhaust has to come out in order to drill out the bolts... and that probably means more sheared header bolts.

And I don't have a great history with drilling bolts out, myself.

So I'm planning on calling my local mechanic and asking what the damage will be if I drop it off to him unless I get any other suggestions.

For riding it down to him, I was hoping to pull the fuse out to disable the EXUP servo but it doesn't seem to have a dedicated fuse. So I guess I'll just make sure the cables wont fall out and leave it running but disconnected. And the valve held closed.

Grrrr. Any ideas, suggestions, gotchas, advice or estimates of what the mechanic will charge much appreciated!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Seat replacement / modification
« on: 30 May 2016, 08:44:41 pm »
So I'm gradually getting the bike all sorted - 2001 FZS1000

All running very nicely but I still have one bug-bear - the seat. It's the original seat. At low speed when I want to sit upright I can sit where I want. But at high speed, when I want to slide my arse back and get down behind the screen,  the shape of the seat causes me to slide forward every time I hit the slightest bump, making me sit up in the wind. GRRRRRR. I have to shift myself back several times a minute - it's infuriating. Also, it's quite convex, causing arse-ache much quicker than an arse-shaped seat would.

I had a Yamaha FJ1200 years ago which had a seat which almost seemed as if it had been designed by someone who once actually sat on a motorcycle, or maybe even ride one once! Remarkable. Clearly, that person got sacked so that Yamaha could pay the marketing people more. Either that or they once tested the FJ by actually riding it several miles.

Anyway, I digress - do others hate the seat as much as me? What do folk do about it? I've looked at some of the websites and their seats look lovely. But I don't want a seat that looks lovely - I want one that I can sit on all day and not feel like I've been riding a bucking scaffold pole. Also, the sites tend to show the seats before they're fitted to the bike so I can't see what angle they lie at once fitted so they could be just as bad as the one I've got.

Any advice much appreciated!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Can't find the carb sync screws!!!
« on: 09 January 2016, 02:14:29 pm »
Guys,

I'm trying to synchronising the carbs - simple job, done it loads of times before... but on the Fazer - NO SYNC SCREWS!!! They're not where the Haynes manual says they should be and I just can't find them!!! What's going on there then!!?? The carbs do need balancing as they're a bit out but I can't find the bloody screws - a simple job is impossible. How do the bike designers manage such a shitty trick!!??

It's a 2001 FZS 1000

I'm hoping the sync will cure this weird issue - if I accelerate moderately at about 15mph in 2nd gear out of a bend I get a weird noise that sounds like some slack in the transmission slapping about. Pulling away from the small roundabout at the end of my road is the litmus test - always happens. Carb balance may well solve it... if I can figure how to sync them!

Any advice much appreciated!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Where can I get valve shims in 0.01mm increments?
« on: 15 November 2015, 10:00:51 pm »
Hi there,

Does anyone know where I can order valve shims in 0.01 increments rather than the 0.05 increments you get on most sites? The acceptable range is 0.04mm (0.21 to 0.25) so ordering a 0.05 smaller shim will take me from just under tolerance to almost over.

Introduction / Ello!
« on: 11 October 2015, 12:49:03 am »
Hello from Suffolk!

I have a lovely 2001 FZS1000 in really nice condition which I bought a few years ago for £1,600 - bargain!

It had a badly dented tank covered in a Baglux cover - sold that on eBay and bought a good tank for £100 or so - job's a good 'un!!

I tarted up the plastic radiator end covers (replaced peeling silver paint with black) and the bike's very presentable.

Hoping to find loads of expert advice on here for any future jobs. The first job is to respray the valve cover - any advice much appreciated!

Cheers,
Dave

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / How to respray valve cover
« on: 11 October 2015, 12:42:44 am »
Hi,

I'm doing a major service and when I got the valve cover off I realised that the paint is all coming away - currently it's just bubbling away on the top where it doesn't show but obviously, it'll creep round to the ends and start to look really bad.

So I thought I'd respray it but don't know where to start - what material is it made of? Aluminium? Some exotic magnesium alloy?

And what's the right way to spray it - some special primer?

Obviously it'll need preparing well as it'll be badly corroded where the paint is bubbling up. I'd plan to attack that with wire brush attachments on an angle grinder unless the alloy is too soft???

Also, is there anyone who reconditions these that anyone can recommend? If he's cheap it might be worth it...

Cheers!!
Dave
