New Bike - Petrol Leak - Carb Cleaning
« on: 26 June 2015, 09:04:32 pm »
Hi everyone!

I bought a Yamaha Fazer 600 1999 today. I rode 20 miles down the road and noticed that I had a fuel leak from one of the hoses that empties any over fuelling from the petrol pump (I'm not very technical). After speaking to a few biker friends they have told me that as the bike I bought has been sitting in a garage for over a year with no fuel in the tank that a type of wax builds up in the fuel tank so when inserting petrol the wax and fuel mixes into the carbs creating blockages... Basically I need to clean out my carbs....

I have absolutely no idea how to do this. I bought a Haynes Manual but I'm finding it difficult to understand it... Does anyone know a user friendly link of instructions of how to do all this???

Please help me!!

Nick    :'(

Hi Nick, welcome to the forum and congrats on the new bike  :D
You say you rode 20 miles, how did it run? If the wax build up were to be a problem the bike would have been running really rough.
Then again you say that it has been stood for a year with no fuel in it, so is unlikely to have gummed up much anyway  ;)
If it's running ok, I'd be tempted to just give it a good service then ride it.
As for the fuel leak, that sounds more like it could be from the carb float bowl overflow, possibly sticking or damaged floats from lack of use, which will mean a carb overhaul.

Of course I'm only speculating as it's pretty much impossible to diagnose without seeing it or at least some pics.

Good luck though,
Steve

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I continued riding the bike back home (30-40 miles). I was told to give it a good run to clear out the carbs but it still continues. When the choke is enabled the leakage stops but as soon as it's off it gushes out again. I had to ride home with the choke on! Used 3/4 of a tank up! Performance wise the bike seems fine! I will give it a good service tomorrow too going through the Haynes book especially as I want to make a few adjustments to the breaks etc.

I've never done a big job (I'm really nervous) like cleaning the carbs so any links or tips or even an extra pair of hands from anyone who lives near by (west london) would be much appreciated!

Everytime I see my bike I get more attached to it... It's only been a day and my baby is poorly! I want to give it a good looking after to get it back to normal again!

It's night time now but I'll try and get some picks of it with the gushing petrol.... meanwhile I'll attach some pics of it from earlier on

Cheers,

Nick

if youre up for a big ride :D come to dover ill give you a hand, the carbs on the fazer are a pig!

getting them off is a lot off taking bits off and wiggling bits about, loom getting in the way making life difficult. then putting them back on getting the airbox on is a huge pain!.

the airbox has 2 grooves on the left and right at the back, almost as if its a leverage point to get a jack handle in there to brute force it back in (ive done this)

take your time with it plenty of slippery stuff when putting them back on.

Hi, welcome to the forum :)

My bike had been sitting around in a garage with no or little use for about a year, so when I got it, I filled with premier fuel and ran it through the system,  seems to of cleared any left in the engine and it's been running fine ever since but I'm still looking to do my carbs as i think ive develped other problems since riding it

That's a bit confusing?

Oh FFS, anyone without a microbiology analysis kit may want to know, i previously wondered why the fuel doesn't leak when the air is cut off (choke)?

I gave up trying to access the carbs as it seemed too complicated (the haynes manual that is!). But after putting new sparks in and giving the carbs a bit of a hammering I started the engine and the leakage stopped! So i went for a bit of a ride and 45 minutes later the leakage started again. Came back home washed the bike, then notice that petrol was gushing out from the petrol tap underneath the petrol tank... so I rushed and grabbed my tools took the petrol tank off and swithed the tap off... but its still leaking from even when off! So after all that it might not be the carbs but the actual tap not flowing through correctly!

Any ideas????

HELP!!  :o :\

Have you removed the fuel line from the tank with the tap turned off. Even if the tap is letting by, the fuel hose is still only braided rubber and have been known to split with age so check the hose - mine was shot a year ago. These naturally can be cut back or a new length from Helfrauds for a fiver (7mm inside diameter).

Good luck fella.

I think it could do with replacing for sure as it does look a bit split... but the actual tap which is connected to the fuel tank leaks even with the tap off... is this normal?

Thanks for the tip lol

Well a friend of mine said that I need to get a fuel repair kit: http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/fzs_600_fazer/98-99/picture/fuel_tap_repair_kit/

He said that it's a lot easier doing that than getting in the carbs so in a way this is good news! Hopefully this will resolve the issues...

nico when you put fuel tank back on give the black pipes a good tug down these are found in front of the centre stand this will make sure you don't get a face full of fuel when you open the filler cap.
