Not officially..

My company are a multi-national. I have seen the forecasted figures for next year (which take into account currency changes and economic contraction).

Also there is the consideration that my company manufacture all across Europe and sell all across Europe.. ANY tariffs or logistical delays will have a direct impact.

Plus all of my whole industry anticipates a reduction in spend. Conclusion next year will be harder than this year, yet profits must be maintained. Result company wide austerity. :-(

General / Where to find employment legal advice?
« on: 03 November 2018, 01:33:32 pm »
Hi guys,

I'm not really asking for legal advice (unless you're qualified or have experienced this.)

Buy how can I go about getting some (cost effective) legal advice around employment law, specifically around being made redundant? Where do you go? Citizens advice? ACAS? Or can anyone recommend any specialists?

Specifically I need to be prepared for some HR interveiws and may have a case for unfair dismissal, and also want to challenge that they are withholding some bonus payments.

To coin a phrase, "Brexit means dogsh*t".

I was told on Thursday I am being made redundant as a direct result of the economic contraction anticipated as a result of Brexit.

Our currency crashing makes the international company I work for less profitable for investers. The slowing of the UK economy also.

Oh well look on the brightside...?!

I'd have thought house prices falling by 10% was a good thing!.

Makes them more affordable for first time buyers and doesn't affect those who already own because everyone else's drops too.

Bring it on I say.

Haha, I've heard that said a before. It makes me laugh because it defies logic. Think it through... The economic downturn will mean people are worse of with less access to credit. The result being people have less opportunity to buy houses and the prices fall.. (Cause and effect)... and you're saying it will help people to buy houses, the people that are now worse off with no access to credit.

I've never used one. But this seems like a good idea:
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F132724896815

I'm pretty hot on my blindspot and shoulder checks. But in London kamakaze moped/deliveroo riders are a nightmare sneaking up on you at lights and doing dodgey under/overtakes around junctions. You can't have too much help.

What has the plastic bag tax achieved?
An 86% reduction in single use bags.

Ths is a classic case of making the story fit the agenda.  :rolleyes
In my experience I probably use a 1/5th of the number of "single use" bags I used to. I still sometimes have to buy a "reusable" bag because I've either forgetten or done a convenience shop... but now I have to buy a bag that is 5times thicker and probably takes 10times longer to biodegrade. The nett result is the same as before, the difference is now I'm paying 5p!! How is that the answer?  :rolleyes :lol :b

I used to use the single use bags as bin bags around the house... now I buy an extra roll of bin bags.. :rollin :rollin :rollin

I'm only messing with you. I agree something needs to be done. But there is lower hanging fruit that doesn't involve charging Joe Public.  :\

It is funny. Put what you want in whatever bin you want. You're local council probably just incinerates the lot and sells you back the electricity generated!

They use the "illegal levels of nitrogen" in london to justify congestion charging.. then build incinerators all around london. It doesn't make any sense to me. They always change the story to suit the agenda.

We also have the biggest sewage treatment works in Europe.. and all the bio material is burnt and sold back in electricity.
Pretty amazing these site probably emit more carbon and nitrogen then anything else you can think of.

Oh well, keep the ecomentalists occupied with plastic bottles, cotton buds, straws and cigarette ends while these sites keep chugging along.

What has the plastic bag tax achieved? I notice the supermarkets are already making the '5p' bags thinner and smaller already. Any idea where the revenue has gone and how many turtles have actually been saved?

Also don't be tempted to go too thin on the tyres. If you think the roads are bad on a motorbike, try riding in the gutter on a push bike! Thanks to the buses there are loads of jumbo pot holes, dodgey ironworks and road markings. In traffic you can't always avoid them or dive round them. I also run Michelin puncture proof tyres. They are a bit heavier, but never punctured and means I don't have to carry any tools.

Brakes on left because I'm left handed and they are not very grabby.

It has a back brake build into the wheel (pedal back) But generally less components means less bits to get stolen, break and maintain. Also less weight means more speed and easy uphills so I don't need gears!

My bikes live outside in full view of the main road in London. Anything good gets knicked!!

Custom build your own. I bought wheels and frame off ebay. Cheap and light was the criteria. No brand stuff. Initially £50 all in, then another £30 tinkering. I love it!

For a start. Ride what you like and ignore what the mamil's say. Do you really want to listen to a man that shaves his legs, that takes the padding off his seat and stitches it into his pants?!

I ride a single speed bike around london all the time. It has a comfy seat and bars. Front brake and coaster brake which I built into the back wheel. It's super light and quick. It also freewheels.
It's so light I can ride from one side of london to the other (often 4-6miles) no sweat.

The only reason I use a single speed is so i can lock it up in central london and not worry about bits being nicked. I fitted the front brake at the beginning of the year after that guy got prosecuted.

I'll post some snaps later.

General / Re: Can't decide which convertible - all advice appreciated
« on: 28 September 2018, 08:22:41 am »
I've driven 100,000 miles in both a Saab 9-3 2.0T and an Audi A3. Both non-convertible, but good faultless cars. The audi was genuinely exciting to drive. Saab was a bit more mundane and plush.
Something you never consider is... People pull out on you a lot more if you drive a saab, because they look less agressive and often driven by older people. Seriously it's noticeable! Merging treffic pushes in front of you and people edge out at junctions on you. My next car was an aggressive looking vauxhall and it was night and day.

I might lose all credibility here (if I have any left) but personally, I with that budget, I'd get an SLK. I think they turn more heads and look less dated.

« on: 26 September 2018, 12:58:38 pm »
Which gaskets have you got? There are fibre ones and copper ones. The fibre ones seem to require less torque to seal. The copper ones really do distort to seal, but you need to make sure they are a good fit in the bore or lined up. I stuck them in place with copper slip so I can get the exhaust on.
Make sure you stick to the apecified torques on the studs.

I used to have a tomtom mounted for european touring. But now you can buy large mobile data bundles with european roaming. I just use my phone with non-waterproof mount. It also bluetooths to my intercom so I can take calls, listen to music and navigator.

I just swapped the centre stand on mine. I just took the tank off and layed the bike down on a cushion (old sofa seat). No need to drain anything.

It is a bit off a ballache to get to.

I do use my centre stand a lot. To spin the back wheel when lubing the chain amd to check the oil level.

I can't see why a canister would have a shelf life?.. But i personally have never liked them. If they are small canisters you can lose a lot of air, if you have a leak attaching them to the valve.. and be careful you don't freeze it to your hand and burn the skin off (as I watched a mate do a few years ago)

I have one off these. It's great and compact and I use it all the time!

Hmm, I didn't realise it was an offence to use them when moving. I use my hazards when driving all the time, usually to thank people that let me into merging traffic.

« on: 30 August 2018, 07:40:41 am »
I don't think an mot is even that stringent. Does it not just check it's legal, not going to fall apart and that it stops?
It blows my mind every year when my ab/used (t)rusty fazer sails through the mot without even an advisory. It's the same conversation with the mot tester every year: "Are you sure?... and you definitely tested THIS bike?... and everything is ok?... Not even an advisory?.."
His response is always the same. A bike has to be pretty bad to fail.

You can get your tyres let down in London, if you park in busy residential areas with limited space for bikes. The locals try and discourage you from parking there. It's baffle me twice before.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Exhaust stud removal- should I attempt it????
« on: 10 August 2018, 04:09:06 pm »
I can't see your photo's with my phone...

Exhaust studs can be a nightmare though. Whatever you decide to do, i would suggest regularly spraying them with plusgas and/or some kind of rust treatment now.

When I bought my bike, mine sheared off with no effort whatsoever. Such little force that I hadn't even considered using heat or penetrator fluid first. :-(

If they shear off short or flush with the engine, their location makes them a pig to drill out... Then if you snap an easy-out in the hole :rolleyes you're proper screwed and it's a new head job.

If it ain't broke... perhaps it's a job for winter. ;-P
