Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / So long and thanks for all the fish...
« on: 25 August 2016, 05:48:10 pm »
I have signed the papers on a new Kawasaki Versys 1000 which I hope to pick up next Wednesday. This will be my first new bike in 14 years and I am more then a little excited.

The Fazer has been nothing but excellent for the last 7 years and 50,000 miles, but she is showing her age now and the maintenance costs are starting to climb steeply. Given that it was already 5 years old when I bought it and I only bought it as a stop gap, it has exceeded all my expectations and sets a very high benchmark for the Versys to try and beat. The Versys brings ABS and traction control and a more upright and relaxed riding position. Its lights suck and like the Fazer, the suspension will need attention.

Thanks for all the wisdom and help over the years, this has been and remains one of the best forums I have been involved with.  I will keep you posted on how I get on. /Paul.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rattle and buzz
« on: 04 July 2016, 11:30:56 am »
I have had a rattle develop slowly over the last few months that has become quite an annoying buzz at around 4k revs. I had thought it was probably the belly pan so this weekend I finally decided to do something about it. It turns out it wasn't the belly pan.  :(

I had noticed before that the clamp holding the end can to the exhaust box was a bit lose but the last time I looked at it, the retaining nut was slipping so I couldn't tighten it properly. This time, the can itself had a bit more movement in it then I was comfortable with so I decided to take it off and see what I could do. It turns out that the aluminium bracket the can hangs off was rotting. The threaded steel bolt that went through the bracket was acting like a file and turning the nice neat hole into a white powdery mess. I put a plastic sleeve over the bolt and ground out the hanger hole to fit. I then cut off and replaced the bolt holding the clamp and it is fitted again nice and snug and no more buzz. However, I know that the rot has set in and it can not last very much longer. Maybe two months, maybe two years but it will loosen up again and I don't think I will be able to fix it properly next time. Any ideas?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Brake line seals
« on: 13 April 2016, 10:22:51 am »
Silly question time. What size are the copper seals on the brake lines?

I have a replacement master cylinder on the way and want to do a full strip, clean and service including replacing all seals and I don't know what size to order.  :o

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bloody typical
« on: 14 March 2016, 01:21:17 pm »
The sun has come out, the missus is away, I have a weekend to myself and an excuse to have an overnight in Dublin, so I plan to take the scenic route and then go visit a couple of bike shops. In particular I want to see the new Versys 1000 in the flesh, and maybe a KTM Super Duke or Adventurer (may as well dream awake as in bed).

My 12 year old Fazer must have heard me planning to visit the bike shops because it decided to play up. Not in a bad way, but more like a girl friend dressing sexily when she catches your eye starting to wander. When I headed off on Saturday morning, she felt fine but when I hit the good roads, which were B and C roads with variable surfaces, pot holes, blind junctions and blinder drivers, the bike just came to life. Smooth, relaxed, comfortable, powerful, accurate, fast and in control. OK it was my first major ride out in months but it really, really felt good.  After a ride like that, the Versys looked sort of... meh. Nice but nothing special, and the shop selling the KTM's had closed early so I only got to see them through the window. I could swear that the Fazer was purring when I finally got back home on Sunday evening. Maybe, instead of a new bike, I should spend a few bob on the Fazer. Perhaps some suspension upgrades? Maybe clean her now and again? What do you think?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Three days on a Tracer
« on: 23 September 2015, 01:50:37 pm »
Two weeks ago I was in Spain on my Summer holidays and while I was there, I rented a Tracer for three days from MotoMercardo http://www.rentabike.org/ in Marbella. This is my trip report.

First impressions; a very good looking bike with a high quality finish. The bike had 19,000 kms on it and unless you got right up close to it, it still looked like new. Coming from my increasingly tatty 60,000+ mile Fazer gen1 it was a treat. Riding solo from the shop back to our villa was a giggle. The bike was light and flickable with a great engine that begged to be spanked and I was soon grinning like a good thing. Gear changes were sharp, throttle was crisp and the brakes had great feel with one finger usually enough (reminding me that I needed to service my own brakes). The suspension was very pliant and soaked up bumps, ramps and sleeping policemen like they weren't there. The riding position was much more upright then the Fazer with wider bars and I felt very much in control. The mirrors were excellent and very well positioned though I noticed the left mirror needed adjusting more and more often as the holiday went on, as if it was losening?

Back at the villa, I decided to try the lower seat position. The back seat comes off easily and there is a 'hidden' catch that releases the front seat. That was when I noticed that the plastics were showing damage. There is a piece of plastic that the seat sits on which appears to have two positions but I couldn't get it into the other one, so I couldn't lower the seat. Perhaps if I had RTFM more carefully but it wasn't obvious standing there. Attempts by previous users to adjust the seat had resulted in cracks and breaks in the carbon look side panels but they were not obvious with the seat on unless you knew what to look for. There was no storage space worth speaking of under the seats, you could fit an enhanced toolkit but not waterproofs or a lock. Not a problem or a criticism, just an observation.

The bike was fitted with a good sized topbox (SHAD - never heard of them before) that looked neat and worked well and could take two lids. We put a very full backpack in it and headed off on our trip.

Day one was from San Pedro to Granada. A-7 to Velez-Malaga and then fun stuff through Alhama. That was the plan and with hindsight, not a very good one. The motorway grind to Velez-Malaga on the A-7 avoiding tolls was a chore of dodging traffic, finding signposts, being in the wrong lane etc. and we quickly found out that the seats were just not comfortable. Why didn't I go via Ronda? Because I was saving that for the return journey. Adding to the misery was the sound. This might sound daft, but at times, I could swear that the engine or the running gear or something was whinging. Certainly not a pleasant sound, though I was less aware of it as the holiday went on. What made it bearable was the engine response was instant and exact, the brakes were perfect, the mirrors were spot on and the handling was instinctive.

From Valez-Malaga we headed inland to Ventas de Zafarraya on roads that got better as they got higher. I quickly forgot about my arse as we started negotiating the hair pins and switch backs while trying to catch glimpses of the stunning scenery. Taking your eyes off those roads was brave. I found I was having to work much harder then I expected to get the bike to take the lines I wanted and was continually running wide on exits which you do not really want to do on a road this blind and twisty when carrying a passenger not really fond of heights. It was only after we went through the pass at Ventas and got onto the straight (but not very smooth) roads through the market gardens to Alhama that I worked out what was happening. Two up, we totally swamped the suspension. Going into corners on the brakes was pitching the bike forward and when driving out of them, the back end was diving so much that my steering was all over the place. I blame the long travel and never actually bottoming or topping out, along with all the distractions of the roads and scenery for being so slow on the uptake and though I did find out how to ride around it, I didn't master it until the third day and it still was not ideal. Normally when cornering, I brake in, cruise through the apex and drive out. What I had to do was brake before, stabalise, and apply steady power from the turn in all the way through the corner and out again so that the bike didn't change pitch. Fortunatly the Spanish are really, really good at building roads and I didn't have a single corner that tightened up on me or pot hole to be avoided mid corner.

From Alhama, we were on the A338 almost all the way to Granada. More stunning scenery and truly great roads but ridden very smoothly and quite slowly and even so, our arses were hurting a lot by the time we got there. One issue was that IMHO the footpegs are just a bit too far back so you end up just catching your heels on them like a bar stool. This makes it very difficult to spread your weight on your feet and even taking your weight to reposition your arse becomes a challenge after a while.

After a fabulous night in Granada, and a guided tour of the Alhambra in the morning, we set off in the afternoon of day two to El Chorro via Antequera. To be honest, I was a bit nervous after the previous days handling and the extra tension did nothing to improve my comfort. One new lesson learnt on the hour or so of motorway driving was that the sweat spot for comfort is between 100 and 110km/h. The bike will happily do 130+ all day, but the rider will not be so happy nor the pillion. Perhaps adjusting the screen would have helped, but like the seat, it was not obvious how to do that without a manual in hand. We got to Antequera about 5 in the afternoon, and unlike here, that is the hottest part of the day, so we limited our stop to a soft drink as it was just to hot to explore the place in bike gear. Another lesson worth thinking about when planning my next trip.

From Antequera we come off the motorway onto the A384 and A357 and the roads just got better and better. Finally, the bike was in its real comfort zone, cruising comfortably on quality sweeping A roads. I didn't have much to overtake but when I did the Tracer made very light work of it. That engine really is a peach. Our hotel was located where the three lakes meet and is the entry way to the Caminito del Rey, which was the purpose of our trip. The final roads we took are on some maps but not others and meandered through soft, rolling country side that was really beautiful and not at all what I expected in Spain.

After a day spent there (a place we will go back to as we only scratched the surface of what it has to offer) it was time to head home again and return the bike. A ridiculously twisty road brought us down the side of the lake to Ardales where we got petrol. I don't know how much I started with but I put in less then 30 litres for a 550km round trip and it was well over half full when I returned it. Then up to the A367 to Ronda. I had heard a rumour that there might be some Vultures visible in the valley and we were treated to a huge flock, with birds from tree top level to so high they were just dots in the sky.

The road from Ronda back down to San Pedro is justifiably famous and now I had worked out how to deal with the (lack of) suspension, it was an absolute joy. The one issue with this road is that you usually get stuck behind someone which destroys your rhythm, but for perhaps the first time, I had a clear road from shortly after starting downhill until three or four miles from the end. Heaven!

What I didn't like: The seats. The suspension. The Sound.
What I did like: The engine. The handling. The looks.

Would I but one? I will have to think about that.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Puppy ate my key
« on: 14 July 2015, 11:01:43 am »
My gorgous puppy is about ten months old now and until yesterday I thought he was cute and affectionate and loyal and loveing and playful and all the things that a great puppy should be.

Then the little fucker ate my key!

I have been carrying a blank in my wallet for months, intending to drop into a a locksmith and get a copy made. As you might have guessed, it is still a blank, but now I don't have the original. Do I need to buy a whole new lock set, is there something a locksmith can do? Or do I need to invest in some rubber gloves?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bugger
« on: 16 February 2015, 11:03:28 am »
A little steam while waiting at lights, and some coolant on my boot when I got to work. There is no puddle under the bike which means either it is only a small hole, or it is empty  :'(

Gen1 just turned 60k. Commute home is about 16 miles. Suggestions appreciated.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Uneven sprocket wear
« on: 10 November 2014, 10:43:14 am »
While cleaning the bike over the weekend (I do it every 6 months, even when it doesn't need it), I noticed that the teeth on the inside of the rear socket were bright and shiney while the outside of the teeth were their normal greyish brown. Out of interest, I pulled the front sprocket cover and noticed the same thing. The hooks showing normal wear for their age but the outside of the teeth are bright and shiney with clear wear marks and no sign on wear on the inside.

I don't think this is simply the rear wheel being incorrectly aligned after adjusting the chain, but I can't think what else could cause it.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Venhill exup repair kit
« on: 22 March 2014, 05:04:16 pm »
I bought the venhill kit to replace a frayed cable exup cable. I got the old one out and put the new one in and it took maybe ten minutes, then I cut it too short.  My fault, I forgot to measure twice before cutting.

Could I get the second cable in? Not a chance! Over an hour later and I have given up. How the hell do you stop the end of the cable from fraying and snagging, stopping it from going through ?

A second question? Should I be using locktight or something on the screw holding the cable in the nipple? Given the heat and vibration, I cant see how it would stay in place?

Can anyone who has had a problem with their timeing chain tell me what the symptoms were please? Is there is a diagnostic test that will confirm (or eliminate) it as a problem?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Aftermarket clutch cable
« on: 06 July 2013, 03:21:21 pm »
I bought an aftermarket clutch cable on e-bay made by HI-LEX, which claims to be made "under license".
It fitted perfectly and felt much better then the original which has started to fray near the lever. I took it for a test ride and was lucky I didn't go far. It quickly felt loose and the more I adjusted it, the looser it got. I was fortunate to get within a mile of home before it failed completely. There is a manufacturing defect which means there is no crimp in the liner stopping it from sliding up the metal elbow. The only thing there is a tiny spur of metal where the end of the liner has been bent out. It works fine until the cable warms up and experiences vibration, at which time that spur slips into the mouth of the elbow and liner follows it. The harder you pull the clutch, the more the liner slides up the elbow, shortening the sleeve and increasing the slack in the cable.
The pictures show what I mean.
I got lucky, you have been warned. Be careful what you buy.

In the name of research (and because I really don't want to pay £60 for the Yamaha part, I have ordered a replacement from Wemoto they claim is made by 'Slinky-Glide'. I will let you know how I get on.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / powering a Satnav
« on: 14 June 2013, 04:28:34 pm »
I am getting a satnav (Nuvi 2547LM) for the bike for an upcoming trip to France and I am looking for opinions on the best way to power it.

The options I can think of are to fit a lighter socket
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/New-12V-Car-Motorcycle-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Outlet-Lighter-Holder-Waterproof-/330939096068?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item4d0d81dc04
or a usb converter
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/3M-DC-8-22V-12V-to-5V-3A-Mini-USB-Car-Supply-Power-Converter-Module-Regulator-/221225608043?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item338212e36b

but both have me worried about weather. The socket is weather proof if nothing is plugged in, but not when it is running the satnav, and the usb adaptor is only weather proof when it is plugged in to the satnav.

Virtual pints for the best ideas.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Clutch lever getting stiff
« on: 23 November 2012, 02:37:39 pm »
I am looking for some ideas about what to check.  My clutch lever has been slowly getting stiffer and stiffer. I didn't really notice until I sat on someone elses bike and their lever felt light as a feather. Gear changes and so on seem fine so any ideas would be appreciated.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Lost my alarm fob
« on: 29 May 2012, 06:04:33 pm »
I lost the alarm fob for a laserline 862 while on a ride on Sunday. Naturally it was my only fob and now I cant deactivate the immobiliser. I got the bike recovered my home and I do not realy want to pay €100+ to someone else to sort it for me. I am fairly decent at DIY including basic electrics so I would really appreciate any hints and tips.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Sourceing parts
« on: 02 May 2012, 01:16:03 pm »
I am looking for replacement bolts for the rear caliper. AJSuttons at http://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co.uk/spares/modelImage.asp?modelID=9023 can get them at £6 per bolt. Expensive, but they are specialist parts. OK, I can live with that, but then they want £19.52 for courier or £13.80 Royal Mail. WTF!

Does anyone know somewhere else I can get parts for the Fazer.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Seats

The seam is bursting on the front of my '04 gen 1 and while black gaffer tape works, it really lets the look of the bike down.  I found this crowd on ebay. Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / AllYearBiker - product plug
« on: 06 October 2011, 12:34:28 pm »
I had my '04 gen1 treated last weekend by Roy and Baz who came over to Ireland and I have to say I am seriously impressed. Of course the bike was spotless when they finished but I expected that so no great surprise there, but the weather has been less then the best here in Ireland recently and when I got home last night my bike was manky again (I commute 35 miles a day on rural roads).  Two minutes with the garden hose and it was spotless. We will see if that lasts all winter, but 1st impressions are that was money very well spent.
