Complete front end minus the speed sensor and maybe the odd nut and bolt

Top yoke has the ignition switch mount removed

Forks have slight weep around seals, no preload adjusters (early fork)

Blue spots and disc's look OK, calipers were free when I stripped the bike

General / Advice from bodywork painter needed
« on: 31 May 2016, 06:44:14 pm »
Have just ordered a twin dry break {sort of) and need info regarding reshaping of the tank after fabrication.
I'd like to fit the flange at the front of the tank and fill in the existing fuel cap hole, problem is the tank isn't flat, Can I ask the engineer to just weld a flat piece into the tank leaving a body shop to reshape the area with filler or will the engineer need to weld in a section with the same profile as the rest of the tank.

Was out in town with an old friend and he introduced me to this lad who's been spannering for most of the big Motogp teams, jealous , you bet. Just started working on the KTM Bradley will ride next year, 4 seconds off the pace atm so lets hope they find some horses by the end of testing or Smith will be lucky to qualify.

General / Up and over hinge required for dummy fuel tank
« on: 12 May 2016, 02:42:39 pm »
I read on Rubyracing's build thread about battery relocation, with a small tail piece there really isn't anywhere to hide the stock battery and even the smallest ones would still be seen, so drastic  measures were required and I got to use my favourite tool, the angle grinder (after 3 hours of steam cleaning)

Load picture later but its pretty obvious tbh (bottom of the fuel tank has been removed leaving some material to give the tank some strength)

Found a local engineer who makes trikes from scratch, he fits alloy tanks to them so a two gallon fuel cell wont trouble him to much, only charges £15 hr and I just picked up my machined top yoke and its mint.

Problem number 1 is finding a suitable hinge so I can lift the dummy cover to fill the cell, I could probably use the original filler cap but think trying to match the filler to the new tank would be very problematic so being able to lift the tank from the front would be the better solution.

Just to make things awkward I want the hinge to be attached to the inside of the rear of the tank,  about the same position as the standard mount but on the other side of the tank. and it will need to lift before tilting back to clear the seat.

I've not had a good look for the hinge yet but before I do does anyone know of something suitable before I spend the next 24 hrs searching

Your Suggestions and How you can help / services section
« on: 29 April 2016, 08:45:08 pm »
Could we have a services section on the main forum page, not tucked away, in articles etc.
I'M sure we've all struggled to find engineers, powder coater's sprayer's at one time or another and I would also put money on some smaller companies going out of business due to lack of work.
I've suggested companies to forum members and vice versa but this was down to luck. If there was a place to recommend companies or even members to advertise their services it could be of use to others.

General / Fastener question
« on: 22 April 2016, 06:41:26 am »
Thoughts on using stainless/titanium round bar to make one off bolts (nut and washer each end)

Looking for replacement bolts for suspension links and the two longest bolts (with my rose joints) would need to be about 160mm, not easy to find metric fine fasteners at this length, I'm reducing the bolt diameter to M10 and want to use 14mm AF flanged nuts.

I know its suspension but if you measure the length of the spacers the bolts don't appear to be there for nothing more than to keep the spacers in place (Think clevis pins)

Thoughts, be as brutal as you like

General / Trouble in town!
« on: 20 April 2016, 01:16:02 am »
Couldn't believe what I witnessed today.

This couple started arguing in front of a crowd of children, full on screaming at each other until the lass smacked her husband round the head, a proper fight then broke out with no quarter given, the lass could obviously fight.

This copper barges in trying to stop the pair from killing each other, draws his baton only to loose it to the woman who then proceeds to beat her husband and the policeman with her newly found weapon.

I honestly didn't think it could get any worse but this crocodile then comes along and runs off with all the sausages

General / BMW S1000RR rear shock question
« on: 08 April 2016, 08:32:16 pm »
If it fits the Gen 1 1000, would it fit the FZS600 ( I don't have the battery/rear guard support no nothing in the way of the gas reservoir etc)

I hadn't heard of this conversion for the 1000 and thought my options were down to either an aftermarket shock, R6 (with all the complications) or keeping the standard one, so muggins here when for a Kawasaki unit, which would go if I fabricate a new top mount but the BMW sounds like the way to go if its more or less a bolt on, the ZX shock can go back on fleabay

Theres a brand new one on Bay atm for a 2015 S1000RR, just need to find out if its the right length, oh and if it would fit of course

General / Problem fitting longer rear shock FZS600
« on: 26 March 2016, 09:17:29 am »
Picked up a ZX12R rear shock off ebay and went to fit it this morning, top bush need drilling and lower holes smaller than stock but not really an issue, what is though is the clearance between center stand mount and the suspension rocker, I could wind in the preload to shorten the shock but raising the rear was part of the reason for fitting the thing in the first place.

Question is did I do something wrong when fitting the shorter dog bones or has anyone else had the bike on the stand and removed the shock only to fine the rear wheel still off the ground (I expected the wheel to hit the floor)

Little disappointed with the result, a ride though may have only taken 20 seconds but Lows and Rinns had to battle through the pack which I think gave the riders who didn't take a trip down pit lane a big advantage.
