They're just warning you of the fog you can't see... it's between their ears.

Would have been good to see it on the bike. Access to the oil filter is probably easier, but may be more awkward for the drain plug. Can't tell if the centre-stand can be retained... or whether the exhaust gasses will melt the rider's boots. :lol

Yes, it's a shame the thread degenerated into such a ridiculous state. The OP can't have found it much use.

I've done it a couple of times. Singlehanded.
Allow two days if you're thinking of saving the cash and doing it on your own!

General / Re: Qick plumbing question
« on: 23 January 2012, 09:58:07 am »
If the banging noises are coming from the boiler itself then it could be getting overheated, either because it's silted up (unlikely with such a new system, assuming the water includes inhibitor) or the internal thermostat has failed. Despite the name, the boiler shouldn't make the water boil. :lol
If it's just general noise from the circulation (especially the pump) then you've simply got some gas in the pipework. If the header tank hasn't run dry, all you'll need to do is bleed the system. Depending on how lazy/stupid the original plumber was, this can be easy or a PITA.

Is it just that there is too much free play at the pivot?
I had a similar problem and found the hole had worn. Sorted it by building up with weld and filing it back to circular.

Been wondering about alternatives for mine, the rear suspension was fairly incompetent to begin with and age hasn't improved it. Sadly I'm too far away (and only ever ride lightly loaded anyway) so I'll just have to wait for news of your results.
There was a chap on the previous forum who was going to experiment with refurbishing old Fazer rear shocks, in fact I sent him an old one to work with, but never found out how he got on.

Unless the wheel bearings have failed or have damaged the seals I'd leave them alone... changing them just on the basis of a tiny mileage like that is pointless, they should last another hundred thousand miles with ease.

Motad are a better make of pipes i think from what I read, but I have not got them on mine yet, suppose any stainless is better than original set. I got no gaskets with mine but only a couple of quid each.
I had a set of Motad ones, they fractured around the welds where the pipes were braced together after a couple of years. The Sandy Bike Spares ones I replaced them with have already lasted better than that.

I find the foam ones fiddly to roll up and insert, the triple-flange type that E-A-R make seem easier and last longer. Just looked for a link and they appear now to be available only in the cord-linked version... though I suppose there's nothing to stop you cutting the cord off.

It tells you the bike's charging system is working fine... and that the battery isn't as fresh as it was when new, but while it still works you might as well keep using it. And now it should survive the intervals between rides better.

cool. do you know the name of the stuff u used?

All too long ago for my memory to retain that sort of detail I'm afraid, but probably bought it in Halfords, maybe this stuff (or its predecessor):
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_749365_langId_-1_categoryId_255230
Should think any exterior grade silicone would do as well.

I glued mine on with silicone sealant. Was a bit doubtful about how secure that would be at first, but it's stayed put for 12 years all-weather riding so far. :)

11.8v from a battery after it has delivered a lot of power attempting to start a bike isn't bad... certainly worth sticking on the charger of course, but it doesn't sound like you've a dead cell in there. Sparks or fuel must be more likely as the cause of the problem.

"Why would a blocked air filter stop it from starting when that is exactly what you are doing with the choke."
Gnasher is right, it wouldn't, but it's not quite the same thing anyway... the choke does restrict the flow of air, but also forces it down over the slow jets which is actually what makes the mixture richer. So a blocked air filter isn't a good substitute for the choke, that tends to make the mixture richer when the throttle is opened wider.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Whats the highest recorded mileage on a FZS600??
« on: 17 January 2012, 02:03:16 pm »
Mine's currently on 138,000 miles, though I changed my first engine a couple of years ago at 115,000. Not that there was anything terminally wrong, just a bit of piston slap... it would probably have kept going fine, I got fed up with it sounding like an old London taxicab. :lol

Sorry to hear that Mark.
Did the broken one come out cleanly complete with the electrode? If it's like this recent post:
http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,1160.0.html
... then it may not put up much of a fight. For a start the tension is off the thread and secondly penetrating oil can get in there easily.

Have had a set on mine for a few years. Went straight on with no problems with the original silencer, I later fitted a Lazer silencer from the same folks and felt the link pipe provided was about 30mm too short which makes it difficult to get enough clearance for the swingarm.

The lamp has been designed by an engineer to meet legal and saftey standards...
But, sadly, not by one who ever rode a motorcycle at night. :lol

Well, I think this is the first time Gnasher has been accused of giving bad advice, I'd certainly take his over somebody who just turns up and starts calling people names.
Well, in this case he certainly did. Utilising the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion of dissimilar metals is a long established method for shifting stubborn steel screws out of alloy... made use of it myself only a month or so back to get the old brake discs off.

I don't know if anyone else has done this, but I ditched the dome of metal that stops the light getting out. The light spread on dipped beam is quite acceptable still, I've never been flashed by traffic coming the other way and nobody queries it at MOT time. Apart from more light it has the extra benefit of not having something rattling around on the friable material of the reflector generating piles of dust.

« on: 11 January 2012, 01:19:37 pm »
Yes, your garage is telling you the truth. Replacing the selector drum, fork, second gear etc. and various other bits like gaskets will cost as much as a second hand engine even before you add in the extra labour to fit them in your engine.

Be prepared to ask the seller what the state of the engine is if they don't explicitly say in the listing.
When I enquired after one that caught my fancy a couple of years ago the dealer admitted he didn't know whether 2nd gear was OK on that particular engine, but he did have a higher mileage one (40k) that he knew to be good so I bought that one instead and it's doing fine 20-odd thousand miles on.

All the same, I think you'd do better to wait until he brings out a DOHC version.

It's a fairly tight squeeze to get the engine in and out... you're unlikely to get a litre-sized one in without major modification to the frame. The Thundercat looks like the throttle bodies would be fouled by the frame too as the inlet tracts are are a steep angle. I'd stick to replacing with another FZS600 motor and, if you want more performance after that, sell it and buy a faster one.

Getting the engine out involves a lot of fiddling about disconnecting hoses and stuff, but it doesn't require a hoist. I've swapped the engine out on my own a couple of times using blocks of wood to get it at the right level and some longer bits as levers.
