General / Re: Downshift Blipping
« on: 05 September 2017, 02:57:53 pm »
I've never found the "aggressive" style of blipping necessary.

Sure, it may sound good if you're "look at me!" sort of biker, but you don't have to bounce it off the limiter to get a smooth downshift, just a gentle lift of the revs as you disengage the clutch is enough.

Yeah agree, the difference between gears is usually only 1.5-2k revs, so 'blipping' more than this is stressing the drivetrain the other way (needing to pull the revs down instead of up.

For Sale & Wanted / Re: 2013 FZ1-S ABS for sale

Had two amusing offers so far.

I wouldn't accept any lower for that fella, just sold my 2011 now for similar and I reckon yours is actually a little on the cheap side.

I've seen 2010 models in dealers for close to £5k.  Private is obviously cheaper but that would be a great buy for someone at that price.

Hi all,

Decided to sell my FZ1 (already found a buyer) and so have stripped off my Power Commander 5 and K&N for sale if anyone is interested.

The K&M might seem unusual to throw in, but I've literally only done around 200 miles with it in and so it's practically brand new with no wear to it, so I thought since a lot of people use PC's to map for K&N's it would make a good package to sell together.  I was in 2 minds to sell the bike and had bought the K&N, but finally decided annoyingly not long after installing it, so a bit of a wasted purchase but just how it goes.

The PC box is a bit tatty (missing the lid) but everything's there except the Dynojet stickers and alcohol wipes - the velcro stickers are attached to the PC unit but the sticky backing is not very effective so I've advertised it as missing.  Otherwise it's in perfect working order.  Comes with the O2 sensor eliminator and instructions for fitting.

It's not just about being able to get the gear located like with the old boxes, it's to do with keeping the bike balanced.

Just downshifting and letting the clutch out puts the stress through your clutch and drive train, potentially locks the rear and if approaching a corner will unbalance the bike.

It's a good technique to practice so that the bike is kept stable.  I only don't blip if I'm actively decelerating and so use the braking force of the low revs to help.

It's the same reason race drivers in cars use heel and toe, so that the car is kept balanced through a corner.

« on: 23 August 2017, 03:57:12 pm »
Most of the time you need the same make to be sure.  What make does your mate have?

I have a Scala Rider Q1 and it says it "may" work with some others, but I haven't tried it so can't confirm.

Do you want to spend 100 notes on 2 headsets so you can talk to each other (unlikely for a decent make), or simply have one for music/sat nav/phone etc and the intercom just a 'nice to have'?

I find the Scala is a great headset and it's been battered for years of touring with no issues.  A mate has a Sena and say's that's pretty good too.

An alternative if you only want to have the odd conversation is to set each others mobile numbers up as your hotdial number, then you simply call each other with an easy button press.  The phone quality on the Scala and Sena is like you're in a quiet room, amazing how they cancel the noise of the wind.

The engine will be fine.

A guy recently drained the oil out of an old merc on YouTube and it ran for about 17 minutes before failing.  It actually takes a little while for the surfaces to run dry, so a few seconds will not impact anything.

As said, replace the side casing and all good.  Looks like the silencer will slide straight back on.  You could fix that up for less than £100 I reckon.

As mentioned above though, did the ped's not hang around to make sure you were alright.  Technically they have just left the scene of an accident, especially as you were avoiding them.  If you had a helmet cam with footage you could take them to small claims court to cover the cost of your bike repairs.  For the price to repair you may not be bothered about that though, but a helmet/bike cam is worth the investment for things like this.

Some might disagree, but I'd not have swerved, simply emergency braked and controlled the bike to stay upright.  I don't mean deliberately hit them, simply make a controlled stop with a blast on the horn.  It's easy for someone to nip out of the way of a bike compared to a car so probably wouldn't amount to anything.

For Sale & Wanted / SOLD - FZ1 Front Sprocket - 16 tooth Renthal
« on: 02 February 2017, 09:03:15 am »
UPDATE - NOW SOLD

Hi all,

I fitted a 16 tooth sprocket to my Gen II, but after a few hundred miles found I prefer the standard gearing and so switched it over yesterday.

It's a Renthal sprocket and barely any wear (certainly no visible wear) having done only a few hundred miles.

Cost me about 17 quid, but happy to send it to anyone who wants it for around a tenner.

PM me if interested.  Will put it on ebay next week if no interest.

Cheers,
Rob.

General / Re: Baffle causing leaness?
« on: 06 December 2016, 09:28:41 am »
With the baffle out would it not decrease the back pressure? And if the back pressure is not within a certain range would it not affect how the engine runs?
Or am I talking nonsense?

You don't want any "back pressure" at all, it's a completely misunderstood concept.

The sizes of exhausts etc are not about maintaining pressure but more to do with getting exit velocity correct.  If you put massive pipes on, it slows down the gases (think of 2 rivers with the same volume of water, a deep one will be slow running compared to a fast flowing shallow one).  If the gases can't exit quick enough it hinders the engine.  So basically the pipes need to be 'tuned' to the engine to get the most out of them.

Too small and they restrict the flow, too large and the gases can't exit fast enough.  So people put massive pipes on, suffer problems and then say "I've not got enough back pressure now".

Bit over the top reporting, not really massive road rage.  He didn't smash it, simply tossed it.  It's better than what would happened had the rider just left him to lose his wallet and phone on the road.

I made my own out of a 2lt plastic  milk carton copying their design ,My front forks now need a full service but it has stopped the right hand seal misting for several months now

Yeah it's an old trick and really does work.  Used to use old photo film too, but digital photography blew that one away, but any thin flexible film will work.

If the seals are well past it there may be no chance of it working, but when it's just dirt and rubbish causing oil to weep past this trick works fine.  Always worth trying before paying for a new set.

I went down the LED 'driving lights' alternative too.

Fitted 2 x 20W spot lights inside the fairing wired off a switched relay with a button fixed under the horn switch.

They are dipped enough not to dazzle people, but provide a huge amount of additional light for country roads.  When these are on with the main beams it's really impressive.

Faza - Does Kodi install on the Firestick directly or do you have to "side load" it?

You can install directly via WiFi.  I followed a tutorial like this one on YouTube.

You put ES File explorer on first and then use that.

It's a little fiddly due to having to enter the website addresses through the remote but it doesn't take that long really.  Wookie is then pretty quick once Kodi is all up and running.

I installed Kodi on the Amazon Firestick and works well.

I've found the Wookie Lite install is best for it, which is really good for the devices with smaller memory.

I used to love tapatalk, but updates over the last few years are killing it.

Even paid for the original version to be ad free, but then they changed to subscription VIP so my money has basically been taken and no longer deliver on what I paid for, and now fill the forum with their own ad's made to look like posts.

Classic case of greedy developers ruining an otherwise brilliant app.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Mod Reversal?
« on: 23 November 2016, 02:37:48 pm »
I would argue that if your only riding it in the rev range in which the mods aren't effective then would you not be better off with a smaller bike?
If your only riding around the 3-6000 rev range then your not using any of a litre bikes potential regardless of mods.

As you said you were searching for the torque of a twin, maybe look at an MT07? They are very cheap new so I'm sure you could sell a fully modded gen 2 fz1 for a similar price to a the cost of a used standard MT?
Just a thought 😊

This is what I've been debating in my head for the last year to be honest, and with the current price of a Tracer 7 I could flog the FZ and buy brand new with pocket money (well maybe not quite).

The problem is I really like the FZ and when fully loaded makes for a nice touring bike.  I might take it back to stock anyway as I can get some money back on the PC/autotune etc and enjoy as is a bit longer while I have a thing about where to go next.

Just was interested to hear if anyone else had gone through similar thoughts.

If you want to get the best out of a gen2 with mods then its dyno time and a custom fuel map to suit your mods.

Thanks, yeah Gen II.

Maybe it's just I've come to the end my mod's then and just have to accept the character of the engine.

Like I say, it's a rocket once the rev's build, but I'm probably trying to get twin cylinder punch that isn't going to happen.  The PC V and autotune have produced a good map, but the normal riding range isn't too far removed from the bike as stock.

I might simply remove it all to get some money back and enjoy the bike as is.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Mod Reversal?
« on: 22 November 2016, 05:18:56 pm »
Hi all,

Am interested to know if rather than looking to add mods, anyone has decided to remove them all and go back to stock setup?

Just for background, I've got a Fuel silencer (no exup - sounds great), removed flies, high flow filter, AIS blocked, power commander V and autotune, smaller front sprocket, but I don't feel I've gained anything in the rev range I normally ride in.

Don't get me wrong, the bike is a rocket at high revs and I've possibly fallen into the mod trap trying to get something out of an engine that it's not possible to get - i.e. nice low range torque.  After all, an engine's character can't really be changed without serious work, simply tuned for best performance, but essentially same 'character' if that makes sense.

All I seem to have done is reduced economy quite a lot (small front sprocket) and not really improved normal riding for the type I normally do.

I'm actually thinking the bike had better torque when I got it and I'm seriously considering removing everything and setting back to stock (auto-tune etc all going back on ebay I guess) even with original exhaust and exup etc.

Anyone else gone through this, and did you feel you'd done the right thing going back?

General / Re: IN CAR RECORDING CAMERAS
« on: 25 March 2015, 03:53:52 pm »
You can record and watch.

A video can be recorded in 1080p but you can still watch in 720p if you want.

Either way 720p should be fine to read plates/signs. If you can it's probably more to do with poor quality video or vibration.

For 10 quid i doubt it will be fantastic and the Amazon reviews pretty much show this.

Ok for a bit of fun, but I wouldn't want to rely on the video for insurance purposes.

Anyone who says it isn't worth it is running the wrong fuelling map.

Or running stock if that wasn't clear from my post.

I put on a Fuel silencer and took the flies out completely (rather than trimming).

The effect is marginal to be honest and I've even thought about putting them back as the mid range is a little down.

Top end is great on the other hand and it screams away no problem once past about 5k.

If you're doing air filter or something it's worth a play with, but effect isn't enough to bother with the grief if you're not doing anything else IMO.

I think its a good opportunity to freshen the show up a bit. I like it, but Clarkson is a bit long in the tooth now and has been almost a parady of himself for a while now.

The show has become cliched and contrived, so a new presenter might be a good call.

Wonder why they dont build a solar panel in so it powers the visor in sunlight. Maybe would become even more expensive then though.

Will be a great one for the future when prices come down, but a bit steep for me when I can just carry a spare in the top box.

« on: 10 March 2015, 09:43:29 am »

but if it is just to tidy up a 12 year old bike you just want to ride, then I would strongly suggest you consider a nice metallic red and settle for 'good enough'.

Just to throw something else in as an option, have you considered using plastidip?

Easy to apply without a lot of the constraints of 'normal' painting and gives a good resistant Matt or gloss finish.

The best part is if you get bored or want to go back, you can then peel it off in the future.

Tidy little unit but 70 quid is shocking. Could wire something similar for under a tenner.
