General / My new toy finally gets legal
« on: 16 January 2015, 11:33:31 am »
Good morning folks, excellent news. The fazer I bought at the end of last year is now fully legit to ride on the road. Insurance was sorted out on Wednesday and road tax and mot done today. Typical though, it was snowing when I took it back from mot station so it's going to be kept in the garage for a couple more days yet.
Can't wait...

After working in a car garage for a couple of decades, I have heard the embarrassed pause from many customers when they find out that the carpet mat has tucked up under the clutch pedal & it starts immediately after. This, however, soon turns to pleasure when they at least know that they are not stuck.
Foolishness through a lack of knowledge is temporary, stupidity in some people lasts forever. these are the ones to look out for.

Greetings from Jockland guys, where the talk of Xmas and Hogmanay take on a higher level as we are pished for the full 2 weeks. At least that was until family & maturity came along, what a tedious, tiresome period it has become now.
My 3 boys are mid-teens & I don't want to show them how to spend their holidays as that's what I do at the side of the pool in summer (embarrassing & asleep most of the time, all through drink).
Since I've got my first fazer a couple of weeks ago, I am still eager to get it mot'd & on the road as soon as possible. Yet freezing cold weather & old age has hindered my progress as the heater in my garage is nowhere near strong enough to allow my digits to work for any length of time. Just a couple of days of balmy 3-plus degrees greyness is all I ask. Where will it come from?

Good morning folks.
Probably a question that's been asked plenty of times this year but I'd like your opinions please.
Which type or make of grips would you recommend? I fancy buying a set & would like to find out other people's experiences.
Cheers

Good morning red, I made a start on tidying up, service and a bit of polish. So far, I've snapped a manifold students, drained the oil and removed the front fairing and headlamp. The wife said to me yesterday "why are you doing that now, you're not going out on it until the early spring ".
Foolish woman, I'm starting all this now to make sure it's good to go as soon as the weather is better.

The wife said to me "why are you doing all this now, you're not going to be able to ride it until the spring at least. "
I'm starting to do all the little jobs now so that it WILL be ready for the spring. Daft woman. Surely there can't be others.

The headlamp bulb holder was loose in the lamp so I removed the fairing, etc & it ended up looking like this.
Does anyone else have a bike that looks similar? Now the fairing is off, I think I'll paint the clocks mounting before refitting it all. Where does it stop?

Thanks for the good wishes guys. I am a car mechanic to trade (for 20 years) before moving to trains 7 years ago so thought I'd seen the last of wee shitey studs that break easily.
I had an evil thought earlier when I saw the option of drilling new stud holes, & thankfully someone else has tried it with success, so I'm defo going to try that after I buy a new set of quality drill bits (Screwfix, here I come).
I'm in no rush due to weather & old age so it will be a bit of time before you see any good pics. I will, though, keep you all updated with any progress that I make & any further cuts & lacerations I make to my fingers & hands.

Great site guys, keep in touch.

At least you can see where the gasket was leaking. The rest of the stud snapped off even after a bit of heat so drilling was the next option. I tried a 2mm drill bit first, and all went well until it was near the end of the stud when I heard a horrible snapping noise. Result is 1 broken drill bit & 1 pissed off highlander. Time to start looking for diamond tipped drill bits methinks.
Wish me luck...

Here are a couple of pics of my new toy.
First project, first snapped stud and now first snapped drill bit in hole = first time I feel like crying for ages.

Thanks for the welcome folks, good to see so many people with "extended" tea breaks like me.
My fazer is a 600 & is red, I'll get some pics up once it sees the light of day again. I seriously can't wait to get out on it, once the cramps in my hips die down, it's gonna be smile a minute.
I am an Inverness man now living in Falkirk since 2000 so plan to get involved in a biker group of some sort soon.
Keep in touch please.

Be good, stay happy

Hi folks, just started my mid life crisis so I went out and bought a 2001 fazer last week. It was mainly thanks to checking out this site that I bought the bike, all the good reports and happy tales made my mind up.
Unfortunately as it is not the best time of year for a 40+ year old man to expose himself to the elements too much, it will need to wait until I get a back tyre and mot before I take it for a decent run.
I intend to get a couple of side bags fitted and do a bit of touring throughout next year, hopefully there are a few others who like to get together for meets.
Keep in touch please, hopefully most of my posts will be tall tales of mega rides and not   questions about problems I have with it.
Cheers
