Having a bit of a spring clean...got both wheels off in readyness for new tyres tomorrow, I've wanted to polish the downpipes since I've had the bike but to do a good job they need to come off.....looking at the studs I think I may have a bit of bother.......so......do or dont ?

Hey Red i'mSurprised that they are your downpipes....being so filthy n'all, look like they've been salvaged from the seabed but to be fair you do use your bike.

They do look like they are going to give you mega hassle but then again if you plan on keeping the bike then they are going to need to come off eventually so why not now.

Do the mighty thous suffer the same way as the 600's with studs snapping????

Been spraying with wd40 and managed to just move 6 nuts.using a stubby rachet so as not to put too much force on them....its the middle two that are putting up a fight...they are a little rounded so looks like someones been here before....need to find my 6 sided scocket think that will help.
The paints peeling real bad and I plan to repaint the whole engine when it gets warmer.so they need to come off at some point.

As Mattsplat says and I reckon you've got a fight on your hands.

Wire brush to get the clag off and then soak with penetrating spray over a few days before attempting that. Also a blow torch might come in handy for heating nuts.

Why do you need to take them off, mix up some autosol and a small amount of WD and rub like foc, then double wrap a strip of cloth round each pipe at a time and pull each end running the cloth to the top of each pipe. This works a treat and these bad boys will be like mirrors......trust me I'm a serial cleaner

Hi bbb......the paint on the engine and covers is peeling big time so I plan to re-paint it, be a much neater job with the downpipes out of the way

Better access with then off then, looks like you've got a bit of work to do to bring them up.....may be better with the whole engine out

mine were actually worse than those, the top clamps on mine were a lot thinner and the studs were nearly half the thickness, I managed to get all the studs off without breaking any, I used a blow torch and a stud extractor.

and the only way I could get my downpipes off was in bits

3 nuts off and the studs look good,soaked the other 5 in wd40,another 3 are loose and i think they will come off this evening without any problems

that leaves the middle two,cant budge them at the moment and i dont want to break the stud....the top one of the two i can reach with my angle grinder, fitted with a new cutting disc there is room to slice one side of the nut,two if i have two,the other is lower and harder to get too...can get a hacksaw blade in there but that will take a while $:\$ .....better than breaking a stud though

WD40 is not penetrating fluid. You really would be better off using Plus Gas or something similar.

I get the same if I'm not logged onto the site. When logged on I see both sets of pictures. Often happens and I just assumed it was down to which way the pictures had been put on the site. I'm not an expert on such things so could well be wrong

Straight out to the garage after work today, another 3 nuts off no problem.that just leaves the middle two.....startwith the top one.not budging.break out the angle grinder and cut a slot down the side of the nut , find an old imperial socket that fits and it comes off a treat

....that leaves one.....ccant get the angle grinder in there , bugger........the nut is a bit worn but is the origanal with the flange at the base, so I find an oversized socket that rests on the flange and tap it with a hammer to try and shock it free.use I tight fitting imperial socket and try to loosen it.......it moves, just a bit, but it moves....do a little dannce around the garage

....more wd40, its all I have, and try again....it moves some more.a bit more pressure and.........BUGGER....snapped the stud

......left me about 12mm to play with.....not a disaster, might be able to do something with that, theres plenty of room if I end up boring it out

.....take the can off and the nut and bolt that holds the back of the collector box and the down pipes should fall away...........NO........middle two downpipes are stuck solid.....20 mins of squirting, levering and pulling and they finally come off....bit of corrosion but will clean up ok...
Front of ghe engine is in a right old state...seen a few winters I recon.......its a silver engine not black

Sorry chaps...I post the pictures from my phone and thd text from my tablet.hence the delay......yeh pretty pleased, could have been a lot worse....polishing the downpipes next, will sneak out to the garage before work in the morning and soak the engine with gunk....give it all day to work its magic

Bit more progress tonight......going to repair the broken stud....found a long 6mm nut at thd bottom of my tool box, bored out to 7mm and ran a 8mm tap through, then wound it onto a 8mm stud and locked it with another nut.ground it round to 9mm od on the bench grinder.this fits on whats left of the stud.so I now have a female thread ready to accept the new stud.wii have to open up the clamp hole by 1mm to take the new fitting, also made a spacer which fits over the fitting between the clamp and nut, this will give me extra thread that I need as the old stud is not threaded all the way down....I will trim this spacer down at final fitting for neatness.......hope the pictures explain the repair better than the text :rolle
