General / Re: Muc Off etc
« on: 10 August 2018, 03:57:52 pm »
I used to use muc-off cleaner on my mountain bike... Before I realised it smelt the same as car windscreen wash, which is 5x cheaper, an awesome cleaner and proven safe on rubber, plastic and paint. I found it just as effective and assume it's the same stuff rebranded. ;-)

I'm watching this thread with interest. In same boat living in Hampstead. I thought the £12/day charge just applies for owning a bike in the zone?! I'm surprised there have not been mass protests organised. Enough bikes could bring the north and south curcular to a standstill for a day!!! That would get people listening. I'm surprised the bike shops, ace cafe and the bike shed are not all rallying to get these things organised. It's in none of their interests that this zones comea into place.

Personally I'll be looking for a bike that has exempt / classic status. Worse for the environment and potentially more dangerous to ride. But f*ck them. I'll even put a little extra oil in the tank, make it more Smokey!! I'll show them low emission.

Incidentally I got flashed in France a couple of times on Friday night. Once by a regular speed camera, the second time between toll booths! That's a new one. Collected ticket at gate one.. Arrived at tollgate two to oay, about 100km down the road. As my passenger inserted payment card into the toll gate. BIG *##FLASH##* and had our photo taken.
Touch wood these tickets never seem to catch up with me.

What sort of speed were you doing along the autoroute?

Averaging 140-150kmph (in a car), limit was 130kmph

What is the limit on that stretch. That's a bit harsh if it's a national speed limit.

General / Re: How much does a Fazer engine weigh?
« on: 02 August 2018, 10:27:06 pm »
I've lifted one in and out of a car boot a couple of times, usually on to sheets of cardboard. It's a very risky lift for your back as it is awkward and you'll have to stretch.

It's easier with all the covers on the engine and there is no easy way to do a two man lift unless strapped to a pallet.

50kilos sounds about right, i had an old office chair I used to wheel mine around.

I thought it was strange to read that one mirror will have a left hand thread... I guess it's incase you clip something with the mirrors, the mount will undo, rather than snap off and/or throw you off.

I still have the standard narrow bars on mine amd standard stumpy mirrors because I do a lot of filtering.

Have you got an issue with your clutch?

It's not rocket science to check. With bike on side stand, remove clutch cover. Undo 6 screws on clutch boss. Remove contents of clutch, check thickness of plates with verniers against manual spec.

Assembley is reverse of disassembly (to quote haynes manual)  :rollin :rollin :rollin

Level of difficulty 2 out of 5 cups of tea.

General / Re: German speed limits.
« on: 10 July 2018, 11:13:07 am »
The irresponsible answer is, I regularly get flashed in Germany and France (probably flashed 3 or 4 times a year for the last 8years). I've never had a letter, been stopped at a border or toll gate. I know that makes me sound like an idiot, but I'm actually quite a chilled out rider, I just like to make progress when on their wide two lane empty roads.

Getting stopped by the police with a radar gun I'm sure is another story and penalties are servere. Ive heard stories of the police leaving your bike at the side of the road, driving you to a cash machine to pay the fine and leaving you at the cash machine to find your own way back to your bike.

The B500 (in my opinion well overrated) was teaming with police the last time I passed through. Both the Mosel and Rhein valley we didn't see any police and IMO much better roads.

General / Re: Goretex or leathers?
« on: 19 June 2018, 04:35:04 pm »
There's nothing safer than leathers... and there is nothing is more comfortable and versatile as textiles.

It just depends how enthusiastically you want to ride.

Personally I always wear textiles touring. Leathers if I'm just going for a blast.

« on: 12 June 2018, 11:49:33 am »
(As you asked me on the other thread...) I've no experience of leather. I'm sure they are lovely, will get more comfortable with use and they look great. You'll need a decent stapler to fit it. I've recovered a couple of seats in vinyl and it's really satisfying.

Unfortunately my bike lives on the street in central London, so intentionally I don't want my bike to look too good or of any value as it will get stolen. I'm only refurbishing my seat because I tour quite a bit and it's particularly uncomfortable.

I almost have all the bits I need.
I cut the seat into sections to make shaping the foam a lot easier.

I'm going to have 2 adjustable air pockets under the rider seat and gel pads front and back. Then a 1" section of foam over the top and reshape it back to how I want it.

I don't think I will go to this much trouble.. but it wouldn't impossible to fit a set of air pads like this into the seat With the valves poking out the bottom of the base to allow 100% adjustability. Only £30 for the set.

This has the gears going in my head.. although I generally believe that keeping things simple is best.

« on: 04 June 2018, 10:42:47 pm »
Well if you've eliminated it being an issue with the spark plugs, caps and coils.. The next logical thing is an air/fuel/carb issue.

Someone else might be able to give you some pointers based on the fact you're bike runs fine on full throttle, but misfires at low revs. (I've only ever experienced the opposite.
Carbs off is a bit of a hassle.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Rough running a low rpm / slight miss fire
« on: 03 June 2018, 11:41:12 am »
First things first, determine which cylinder(s) have the issue by putting a spitty finger on the exhaust manifolds as they warm up. See which cylinders warm up the slowest and report back.

You can then diagnose the issue by swapping plug caps (1/4 and 2/3) and repeat with the spark plugs to see what the misfire follows. If it still remains on same cylinder it's time to look at the carbs.

I do have an interesting idea for fitting some adjustability.... Cheap cheap air wedge.. And if it doesn't work, I just leave it deflated with the seat standard.

What's that composite foam you've use and where do you get it? Getting the right density / firmness is difficult when buying foam over the internet.

Rather than build up the nose, I just want the seat pan area to have a slight backwards tilt, as I feel like I'm sat on the slope pushing me forwards.

I don't really do 'manning up', but the man in me does do fixing and improving stuff. I'll have this project on the go this week...

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS600 valve train noise/camchain
« on: 01 June 2018, 11:38:00 pm »
Show the bike the redline now and again. The inertia mismatch between the cam and crank shafts will put more slack into the cam chain when revving up and down from 2000-12,000rpm, than you will ever generate by rolling the bike backwards!!!

General / Re: Tips for long distance comfort

I literally today got a secondhand seat with the intention of experimenting, reshaping, adding gel inserts and recovering.
I do loads of touring. Anything beyond 200miles / 3hrs is torture! on my 600.

I think I want to go a little firmer and build the nose up a little.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS600 valve train noise/camchain
« on: 01 June 2018, 08:23:04 am »
How does rolling the bike backwards 'reset' the camchain tensioner?! That makes no sense.

If your trying to make the tensioner go another click, by putting any chain slack to the back of the engine, you want to push the bike forwards, surely! Assuming that does anything. It would probably be more effective to remove the centre screw (spring and ballbearing) from the tensioner and push a screwdriver in the hole.

General / Touring - Loire Valley, France?
« on: 31 May 2018, 11:30:32 am »
Hi All,

I'm planning a tour of the Loire Valley over a weekend with my other half. Has anyone done it before? I'm after recommendations for places to stay and things I must see.

I was planning to Ferry over to Caen, head down and pick up my missus at one of the airports (Tours, Angers or Nantes). Tour about for the weekend, then drop her at one of the other airports before cruising home.

I've never done the Loire Valley, but have previously enjoyed touring other rivers and valleys around Europe like the Mosel and Rheine.

Thanks,

Brett

It's not a difficult job... Provided you have the right tools. There's a big nut to undo in the centre if you're replacing the whole basket (something like a 26 or 32mm?) and you'll need a tool to hold the basket while you undo it. If you have those it's no dramas.

Surely the critical thing is the balancing. The last thing you want is a wobble on at speed.
