Clutch Pressure plate
« on: 30 July 2016, 10:14:14 pm »
Hi All,

Does anyone know where I can get a clutch pressure plate from urgently, changed all the friction plates on mine and putting it all back
together the spring seats on the pressure plate disintegrated!

Cheers

You're not the only one to do that!
When fitting the pressure plate you need to get it aligned correctly. Before putting the screws in, check orientation by pressing on the plate with your fingers, if you can feel the friction plates are loose you're on wrong. Pull it off, rotate it and offer it up again.
My dealer (Bykebitz in Yateley) got me one in a couple of days, IIRC it was around £60 including VAT.

How tight should I do the screw up, the book says 8nm but my torque wrench does not go down that low so was thinking maybe
just hand tight with a screw driver?

Also with the new plate fitted should the last plate be level with the basket or slightly recessed?

Cheers

Don't use a screwdriver, use a 10mm socket. So long as you line the dots up, do the bolts up until they are all just under the spring tension, then do them up in increments working opposites bolts until all "nipped" up.

I think its about 10Nm isnt it, (nipped up is usually tight enough)

Cheers Deefer,

When you say dots which do you mean as I don't recall seeing any markings on my old pressure plate?

Ok so what am I doing wrong, positioned the new pressure plate so that it could not move when pressed against the clutch plates,

Did the spring bolts up as deefer said and at each stage I tried
The clutch lever to Make sure it was working.

Put the cover back on started the bike up and nothing, when I put the bike in gear with the clutch lever pulled all the way in the rear wheel is still turning under power and that is with the new clutch cable adjusted all the way out.

I soaked the plates at the weekend for around 4 to5 hours, so have stripped it all out and am getting going to soak them overnight.

Have missed something.

Cheers all

Look on the bright side.. at least you have power to the back wheel now. :lol
As for the problem that it's permanently driven, did you lose the ball bearing that sits at the end of the pushrod?

Might be worth a look in the sprocket cover to check the cable is operating the bit that shoves on the pushrod.
Have you only twiddled the adjuster at the handlebar end of the cable? (In case you didn't know about the adjustment at the bottom, under the rubber cover.)

Didn't know there was adjustment at the bottom thought that was for the thunder cat, ok so how do I adjust the bottom adjuster on the clutch cable?

Lever out the rubber bung on the sprocket cover... locknut and screw adjuster inside.
As it's probably never been done since Yamaha put it together it'll be worth taking it out and flushing the old gunge out before squirting some new grease in, unfazed did a neat instructional called "Fixing a clicking Clutch Actuator in FZS 600 and 400" here:

cheers mate,

Ok so have looked at the guide you pointed too, but what is the adjustment on this actuator
that I need to do as the guide only really states replacing the grease?

Cheers

It alters the take-up point with the same effect as the cable adjuster on the handlebar has.
Wind in the latter so that it's pretty much at the start of its range (also has the benefit of reducing the exposure of the slot so less rain and dust gets into the cable). Then at the bottom, with the locknut slackened off, turn the screw in until the take-up point is near where you like it to be. Tighten up the locknut, bung the bung back in. Fine-tune at the top end of the cable.

Cheers mate,

Last question when I had the clutch back together last night I noticed it felt stiff/tight is this due to the new plates or the new springs being almost completely compressed?

If you used standard Yamaha springs and the action is stiff, then I'd look at lubrication of the lever pivot, cable and the actuator in the sprocket cover.
If you fitted heavy duty springs I'd look at getting the correct ones instead.

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice, finally back on the road.

I figured out what was wrong last night, It turns out I had the plate with the slightly larger diameter that fits over the Anti judder spring in the wrong place causing the clutch to be constantly engaged.

Felt good to be back in the saddle on my commute to the office this morning, clutch was good to start with but by the time I reached the office it started to drag a little so guess still some fine tuning to do.

Ok so need some more advice please, took the bike for my normal 60mile commute which involves a bit a city riding, back lanes and some motorway to finish off, at the start the clutch was sweet but by the end when I pulled off the motorway I noticed that with the clutch lever pulled in the was a slight drag.

The same happened again on the way home I have stripped all the plates out and everything seams ok so now at a complete lose.

Could it be cause of the new plates and springs and will settle down or is it something else I am missing?

Cheers all
