When I had my gen1 I used a lithium based grease that I had lying around the garage, in six years of ownership I never had any trouble with the exup valve.

Lithium or ceramic grease seems to work well. If you don't have that a good dose of copper grease should work fine.

ceramic is supposed to last longer, as it copes better with heat. I cut grooves (like a thread) down the far end exup bearing on one of my fazers and it hasn't been touched for ages. It was a yamaha dealer that said he had been doing it for years with great results. I have to say he was right as i have owned mine since 2005 and it has worked perfectly. When i bought the bike new the exup started sqeaking after 500 miles and i was not impressed! Cutting a fine thread round the exup bearing surface traps grease, so it requires less maintenance.

I currently use copper grease but will change to ceramic when the tube runs out.

I'd reckon a lithium grease would be burn't off in a few miles.
I use copper ease.

Never burnt off on mine, whenever I serviced the exup I had to clean the old grease off first.
