Title: Givi mounting racks - any recommendations please?
Post by: roxburd on 27 April 2019, 09:58:55 am
We're off on a tour soon and as we're two-up I really need to get my old 36 litre Monokey Givi panniers mounted on the Fazer (2001 FXS 1000). I really didn't think it would be difficult. Expensive maybe, but not difficult...

I did a bit of research and it looks like there's no way to mount my old Wingrack which would have been ideal but there we go.

So a couple of weeks back I ordered the side rack (PL348) from www.modulemoto.co.uk (http://www.modulemoto.co.uk). The side-rack blurb says it must be fitted with the top rack (348FZ) so I ordered that and a top plate (M7) from www.motocard.com (http://www.motocard.com)

All's good.

Then, yesterday, I emailed ModuleMoto to find out when the rack will arrive and they said "Oh, we don't stock them any more"... what's more, I can't find one anywhere on the web (that will ship to the UK).

So, I have a top rack and top plate on the way (which I only ordered because the side-rack PL348 requires them) but no side-rack and no way to mount my panniers on the bike!!

Does anyone know of any way to side-mount Monokey panniers on the 2001 FZS 1000?

Thanks!!

The PL349 rack seems to still be available but it looks like it doesn't fit the 2001 model. Anyone know if it can be modified to fit?

I would ask Givi but they have convinced me that they know nothing about their own products.

I don't see why PL349 won't fit an earlier Gen1. The top of the pannier frame bolts to the 2 lugs on the side rails of the rack. The lower bracket bolts into the hole at the rear of your pillion footrests, you may have to loosen them temporarily to get everything lined up. Lastly there's a bracket that bolts the 2 pannier frames together. This passes behind the numberplate.

A quick search and Mad4bikes has a set in stock via Amazon. You could try them direct to see if cheaper.

Lifesaver!! Thanks dude!

Do you have a link? A search for PL348 at http://mad4bikes.co.uk (http://mad4bikes.co.uk) returns:
Your search returns no results.

And I don't get any hits on Amazon.

Thanks!!

Cheers dude. I may just order a PL349 from somewhere with good returns arrangements! If I can't mod it then I'll just have to send it back.

You clearly know about this stuff - my next questions are:
 - the bracket that bolts the 2 pannier frames together goes through the indicator mounting holes, right?
 - so what do you do for indicators? I know you mount them under the rear plate but do you need extra brackets?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm expecting equivalents of those parts to arrive shortly - it's the side-rack (that supports panniers mounted on the side of the bike) that I'm having trouble with.

Thanks though.

The bar that links the panniers together is cranked at both ends so you can vary its position to just pass behind the numberplate, so indicators stay in place. They are quite strong and firmly mounted without using the cross brace.

With the side rails attached and side panniers fitted, other road users won't really be able to see the rear indicators from the sides if they stay in their original mounting position, unless behind the bike. Givi have separate mounts / brackets that allow you to relocate the indicators under the central rack: I'm not sure if they come in the rack kit or not(?). Moving the indicators allows the the cross bar to go through the vacant indicator holes.  Should you want the indicators to stay in their standard position, the cross bar can alternatively be fitted up behind the number plate.

I originally moved the indicators, but put them back. Your right, they cant be seen from the sides with the boxes on, but look so much better in the standard holes and you aint got them two wires looking shonky feeding the re positioned indicators. Kit is an arse to fit...like the guys say do everything up loose initially. The little rubber bungs(especially the one in the top rack) you wanna silicone in, otherwise they fall out when you aint got boxes on. Good kit but finish is rubbish, im gonna have to take it all off and paint it this year.

For anyone reading this with the same issue as me - the 348FZ fits the 2001 model perfectly and includes the brackets to hang the indicators.

The PL349 does not fit the 2001 model. They moved the right-hand pillion footrest/exhaust hanger in and up on the 2003 model so the PL349 leaves a nearly inch gap when fitted to a 2001 model. And the tubes are damn stiff, as you would hope, so they're almost impossible to bend.

However, if you happen to have a heavy-duty pipe bender (for plumbing) that will just about do the trick with some very careful geometry dead-reckoning and a lot of huffing and puffing. And luckily, the tube is just the right length so with the right bend the mounting slot ends up just the right place. The tubes take the bending well and didn't even need any touching-up (though I did wrap them in cloth before the bend).

Another tip - Givi recommend cutting the leads to your indicators to insert the extender leads. That means electrical connectors hanging around exactly where all the spray gets thrown up. Instead, with a bit of wriggling, you can just disconnect the indicator leads where they are plugged in behind the rear light unit and insert the extension there - no cutting and no new connectors sitting right where they're gonna get soaked.

Good luck!

Don't blame me if you break your pipe bender!!
