I just use Amazon. You don't have to download whole albums, just the tracks you want. It has also given me some good suggestions of other bands to try based on others I have bought.

Depends how much music you're thinking of because then you have the pros and cons of subscription services like Spotify or Deezer etc.
My 4g contract with ee includes deezer, songs/ albums can be downloaded to the phone so when no network coverage I can still listen to my favourite songs,  if you already have a phone on contract then these types of perks are well worth looking into!
Some say...

Doesn't really answer the OP, but spotify has a free version that you can have a play with before taking the plunge and  subscribing. There's an advert about every 3 songs if you listen to an album, but no dj drivel. I've had a couple of bands I couldn't find on there though and you can't download to play later with the free version.

I use Spotify free as well. Other drawback is that you can't specify which individual track to play next. You have to use Random Shuffle and get the tracks in the order Spotify decides. No problem if you just want to try out a particular band. Other good aspect of free version is you can pick playlists like 'Modern Blues' and get a whole run of classic music to your liking.

Back when i used free spotify it didn't make anything random, it just worked like the full one but without the ads and without the ability to play the songs offline.
That's changed?
Anyways i use spotify, the only downside is Tool isn't on there at all, that's the only band i've not been able to find on it.
It's nice to just login anywhere and have your tunes though.
And i've got all the songs on my phone, PC, whatever.
Got it on now, just listen to it at work.
If you download alot of music the $11 AUD a month is a good price, i easily download more music than that.
If you never download music then well it's $11 a month you don't need to spend haha.

Back to actually buying tracks - I use Amazon like Nick but occasionally I'll use iTunes as well.

My preference is Amazon as the tracks are natively MP3 as opposed to M4A from iTunes (probably not an issue for you, I just have OCD in that everything I have is MP3). I also find Amazon to be slightly cheaper for the same stuff, plus there's no need to faff around with a heavy-weight application like iTunes. Amazon has its own app that you need to use to download your music, but its very lightweight and easy to use and it can export the music to your preferred media player. Oh, and they have a mobile app which allows streaming of purchased music I believe :)

I use Iomoio. Add a payment to your account and just top it up when required. All music is cheap too.
I could change my opinion, but then we'd both be wrong.

Or you could burn them onto vinyl and play them on your gramophone.  :lol

There are plenty of cheap sites like Iomoio run by Russians or Ukrainians. The reason they're cheap is they don't pay anything to the record labels... so guess how much the recording artist gets?
I stick to iTunes or Amazon.

Short answer: Yes

Further information:

You can generally burn most common Audio formats to proper Audio CDs. Windows 8 I think can do this natively now, but I personally use Infrarecorder

MP3 and M4A are definitely supported, not sure about MP4. MP4 is a Video format, not Audio. Some applications can extract the Audio from a Video if that is what you want to do

Be aware that Audio CDs and MP3 CDs are two very different things. The former is compatible with all Car Stereos to the best of my knowledge, the latter is more specialised but allows you to have a longer length of audio on a single disc (more songs)

You can burn CDs on itunes as well although it is a bit of a faff, but easy once you work it out and have done it once.

The Amazon music I download is MP3 compatible. My MP3 has become my main source for playing music now. It gets plugged into docking stations (just glorified speaker systems), CD players and the car stereo. All my music is also stored on the home computer and backed up on a "stand alone" type hard drive. No more need for CDs.

My brother uses the free spotify, but I think buying the music just suits me more and is a little more flexible?

It was very time consuming but i put my cd collection onto iTunes, and backed it up on a separate hard drive, then chose all my favourite songs and put them on my phone.
I now have 3 boxes of cd's gathering dust, which i don't use but don't have the heart to get rid of them either.

Once your music is on iTunes you can then make an MP3 cd of your whatever songs you fancy, and obviously depending on the length of each track you could get anything between 100 to 150 songs on one cd, which you could play on shuffle to mix it up a bit.  :)

At work i either plug my phone into the music system on my bench, or plug the iPad into it and there are untold radio stations about to suit your own music taste as well.

I occasionally use free Spotify as well, i had a free pass from when it was first around, and one good thing it does is lets you create your own radio station.
If you pick an artist that you really like it will play other songs from that era/genre whilst continually chucking in your artist of choice every 5+ songs apart.
The only downside is that because it's free they bombard you with irritating adverts to try and force you into subscribing, so it can get a little annoying after a few hours.
