Newbie little advice.

Going to see an 04 Fazer 1000 this week on 36k.


Now I have read on here about the cam chain tensioner issues so a few questions regarding them please. I'd rather prevention over cure. I don't do many mile's.


Is there an upgrade auto tensioner, ie: first gen R1?


When changing the tensioner does the chain need tension applied while doing the job or is it just an unbolt and bolt on job. ( Obviously setup of the tension )

You can buy a manual cam chain tensioner kit, costs about £40. Takes 10 minutes to fit. That's the way I went after reading a few horror stories.

Failures of the OE tensioner are very rare.  I've read of less than a handful in over 15 years of Fazer ownership and forum membership.  However, the result when one does fail is not good, so if you're a belt 'n' braces type, fit a manual tensioner.

I guess it depends on the mileage of the bike.  Once the cam chain has stretched after a few thousand miles, chances are it won't stretch any further.  Your ears should tell you if it's starting to get a little slack, though.  :)

Is there a fitting guide for a manual tensioner. Preset tension?
Does the cam chain have to have tension applied while changing.

Yep there is a fitting guide which shows you how to lock your auto tensioner in place, remove it, then adjust the manual one to match the adjustment on the auto one. Must have done 12k miles since I fitted mine with no adjustment necessary. There is a youtube demo by one of the forum members.(Devilsyam)
