Try downloading and running ADWCLEANER, you'd be amazed how much shit that can find and get rid of, speeding things up in the process.
I wouldn't expect miracles though, it's simply an old system that you're using.

Ok further up date
C drive is my normal drive and I have two dump drives e and f and seems e has gone down
Therefore I think the pc in checking hardware can't get passed this drive
How do I stop it looking for the e drive

Apart from just unplugging it you will be able to disable it in the bios settings.   When the pc boots up watch the screen, it will say something like "press f8 to enter bios" .  Watch what you do in there as you can change many of the timers etc it should be self explanatory to get to the e drive and disable it, then save and exit

You must press the bios setup key while the message is on screen, might take a couple or reboots to catch it

Just been through the process of buying another computer -- its all here http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,18662.0.html
I went for a refurb one for £130 ish Having used the new one now for a few weeks it is so much faster than my old xp one, that just like you I doggedly held on to, and so far my old programs still work on it as it is a win 7 pc
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

May as well apply for the Windows 10 upgrade while it's still free.
Once you customise it to suit whatever you want it's pretty much the same as Windows 7 anyway, with a little bit of Windows 8 chucked in for good measure.
I quite like it now, and have stayed with using Google Chrome because it works with Adblock and Whatsapp Web which i use a lot but Microsoft Edge doesn't allow, which is pretty shit to be honest.

To stop Windows XP from automatically checking for disk errors on your E:\ drive;
Obtain a command box by clicking Start > Run
type the following command and hit Enter chkntfs /x e:
Then reboot to see if the symptom has cleared - but bare in mind you evidently have an issue with this disk and it shouldn't be used.

See here for more detail - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/160963

As PieEater says, most likely HDD phyiscal issue, get your data backed up regardless of the HDD status.

SMART tools offer some indication of impending failure, if you can find some that will install on windows XP
