car tyre query
« on: 24 November 2011, 01:28:09 am »
we were out at the flics tonight (at Linwood for the locals), the easy way home by motorway was closed for repairs, the detour taking us round the arse end of Paisley and back towards the airport to rejoin the M8. trying to follow the detour we didn't spot a bit of pavement sticking out into the two lane road - like a reverse bus stop, so bang! both passenger side (near side? never did get the hang of that) wheels collided with the kerb. both stayed inflated, no wobbles or pulling on the move, but there is a bulge on the sidewall of the front tyre. about the size of a tangerine, but black ...obviously.

my question (at last I hear you cry) is this - does the bulge mean that the tyre is damaged and unsafe? (would be typical as they're not that old)

If the tyre has a bulge you've damaged the belts inside, change it as it will pop when you least expect it, have a good look at the other one as well and check the rim carefully.

sorry...
Yeah, pretty sure it's an MOT fail, so probably not as safe as it could be :\

That's a bit of an understatement, the bulge is where, as the good Captain says, the inner carcase has split so all that is keeping the air in now is the rubber sidewall.  It could burst at any moment and, being on the front, will probably do it halfway round a right hander.

I've never understood this need for another term for left and right either... if it is necessary why not use port and starboard like boats and aircraft?
So, nearside is the further side from the driver... where's the sense in that? Nearside because it's near the kerb, perhaps? Drive on the continent and the nearside would logically now be on the right. :rolleyes

Oh, and everyone is correct: change that tyre before it completely disintegrates or the Plod see it.

not trying to teach you to suck eggs but when checking other tyre I'd take the wheel off as it might not be so easy to see the inside of that wheel!

we had this happen to us on our caravan when I was a kid. the bulge looked like the tyre was pregnant! when we had it changed the tyre fitter put a scredriver into the bulge to demonstrate the effect a blowout would have had!! like I say was probably 37 years ago now but that noise & image has stuck with me!!
It ain't what you ride, it's who you ride with!!!

You seem to have got the hang of it. When I was an instructor I used to love people like you cos they invariably always needed extra lessons.  :lol

Change the tyre ASAP and get the other one checked at the same time. I'd also recommend to not even attempt driving any further with it like that and put the spare on. A blow out could cause more damage and even result in an accident. Better to be safe, Alan.

So, nearside is the further side from the driver... where's the sense in that?

Since the tyre question seems to have been answered here is another thought. On the motorway we call the lanes nearest the centre the outside lanes. Surely they are the inside lanes and the hard shoulder is on the outside  :'( .

Been getting my tyres from http://www.performancetyres.net/ for 20 odd years.

Good prices.  Best to phone to make sure they have what you want.

How so? Stick with the near side is the kerb, and you're supposed to drive on that side if not overtaking (there's a whole other thread :lol ), and you move out to overtake - to the outside. Simples  :angel

Dunno where you get your tyres Alan but some vendors offer a lifetime guarantee against accidental damage (F1 Autocentres are one) I would suggest claiming off the Local Authority if the 'hazard' was poorly lit etc..

Mrs Gringo went to local fitter tonight and got a new tyre, lucky they had one as it's a non standard size. dunno if there's any guarantee deal.

claiming off the council? have wondered about that Trev. might go back and check it out.
