General / What's your single most recent motorbike purchase ?
« on: 06 March 2015, 09:42:55 am »
I know we all have a tendency to fritter a bit of money away here and there, but what was your single most recent (non-consumable) purchase relating to motorbikes ?

Mine was a pair of Gerbing G12 heated gloves which I bought whilst my bike was being MOT'd.

Top tip, get your bike MOT'd somewhere that they DON'T sell motorbike gear.  It can get expensive.

General / engine diagnosis
« on: 18 July 2014, 03:47:37 pm »
Hiya all.  A friend of mine is having a problem with his fazer and I was wondering if anyone could diagnose the issue from the evidence I have ?

Cheers

Issue: above 6,000 rpm loss of power engine sounds like it is misfiring/rough

Tried
: coils swapped with known good
: TPS swapped with known good
: plugs swapped with known good
: ignition unit swapped with known good
: breather tubes checked
: reg/rec swapped with known good
: all electrical cables checked for corrosion

Apparently the carbs have been balanced recently although I understood that normally affected low revs..

To all intents and purposes the electrical system seems fine.  The brakes, lights, cooling system, clutch and gears work too.

Any ideas please ?

General / engine oil ...again... sorry

Please can anyone tell me if this is synthetic oil or not and can I use it on my fzs600 ?

I've scraped my pegs a ton of times, toe scrapers a few times but not got my knee down once.

Having seen Fuzzy's Knee down pic (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,13799.msg155891.html) I was wondering which one tips the bike over more.  I've heard that bikes are actually more upright when doing a knee down than when staying firmly on the seat.

I've also heard that getting tourers over is harder than sports bikes so does that mean that if you can handle a sports tourer well that you'll find a sports bike easier ?

Is my educated guesswork correct ?

Cheers

Your Suggestions and How you can help / comment in email notification
« on: 24 September 2013, 03:17:22 pm »
If I ask to be notified for updates to a topic I get a hyperlink which directs me to the site.  It would be handy if it contained the comment which had been added as well.  This would mean a slight reduction in site traffic (possibly making the site quicker too) but people would still log on/in to respond or get context for the topic.

Cheers

FZS600 Fazer / thundercat vs Fazer
« on: 19 September 2013, 10:56:20 am »
Whilst looking to see if thundercat brake levers would fit on a FZS600 I wondered why it's widely stated that the Fazer (95bhp) is based on a detuned thundercat (89BHP) engine.

How is it detuned if it has more power than the thundercat ? (I understand the thundercat probably has more low end and maybe through the rev range due to the ram-air doo dah ?)

It looks like the Thundercat has 87.7 bhp @ 11,250RPM whilst the Fazer has 95 bhp @ 11,500RPM.  The Thundercat is allegedly 223kg and the Fazer 189kg.  Surely the weight makes up for some of the lack of power ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that the seating position and front forks and fairing make the Thundercat a quicker bike, I'm just wondering how the engine is 'detuned', it sounds like an insult since at certain times (??)  it will be more powerful than it's brethren.

I know Punk likes the Thundercat and that is enough for me to safely believe that it is a cracking bike, this is not supposed to be a criticism of either bike, just a question.

I wonder if anyone can point me to a dyno from a stock Thundercat and a stock FZS as that may shed some light on it for me.

TIA

Astonishing.   No other word for it.  Thought this was so outrageous it needed sharing so that the comedians could work their magic.

I've recently been made aware of MFN (http://www.mfn-club.co.uk) in nottm

Anyone go to bike night there on a Wednesday and fancy a bimble/pootle or even a nip out ? (Others can hoon if they wish)

I'm thinkin more of a back road jaunt rather than motorways. I'm not too hot on rain tho so I'm conflicted since it doesn't look like a great forecast.

General / Off topic (off the reservation): What does rhyme with hug me ?
« on: 06 September 2013, 09:22:18 am »
I'd go with bug (Slug a close second (first for everyone else), and maybe tug for a third).

http://whatrhymeswithhug.me/

Any other decent lyrics (apart from the obvious http://www.buzzfeed.com/perpetua/words-robin-thicke-should-know-rhyme-with-hug-me) from you budding musicians out there ?

Please don't tell me you need context.  If you don't know what I'm talking about ...

General / process to make custom headphone earplugs
« on: 02 September 2013, 10:46:25 am »
Does anyone know the best way to do this ?

Can one earplugs thingy really make 4 ear plugs ?

The YouTube I've seen shows a guy sticking the earplugs in, then cutting out a hole, is this the best way ?

Advice please from those that have (punkstig is one I believe ;-)

Lidl's tomato ketchup is actually better than Heinz !

I've been a Heinz snob for years but my independent taste survey (participants:me. I excluded the wife's vote as it wasn't the same as mine) just verified it's superiority which is stunning since it costs less than half the price.  :lol

General / handlebars
« on: 26 July 2013, 11:22:41 pm »
So this is in general as I'm sure it applies to all bikes.  Some questions:

My handlebars are bent (as you prolly know).  Do I :

Buy oem, rentec or something else ?
How hard/easy to fit ?
Buy risers?

The cut and shut is that I don't really notice they're bent but everyone else does.  I'm guessing that's a bad thing.  I want cheap and cheerful and better if I can and I know nowt about owt.

10am, Copt Oak.  Meeting up with some FB ridout people so might make the group larger.  Dunno where we're going but should be fun.

Maybe via Loughboro, Melton, Rutland, Oakham and Uppingham finishing at the M1 junction at Lutterworth who knows.
