I'd bite your hand off at that price if you were nearer. I can't be bothered taking the trailer half way across the UK though  :lol . Great mini project for someone a bit closer. You'll get that money easy. As for where to sell. Facebook is a pain in the arse, but eBay regularly have discount days with 80% ish off their fees (One starting this Friday, but motors might be excluded?)

« on: 07 February 2023, 09:31:29 am »
I'm only just seeing this resurrected thread, or I would have answered earlier......about 2 years ago, my MOT tester picked up on the 'play'. No advisory, but he mentioned it and I stripped the rear linkages as soon as I got home. Most of the bearings were absolutely fine, but two were definitely gone with water ingress. So I changed them and cleaned/fresh greased the rest.
There was little to no difference  :rollin  These things have a vertical knocking from the factory it seems. I told him on the next MOT and he's been fine ever since.

Thanks. I'm thinking the same, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something glaring. I've not moved the wheel back more than a couple of mil in total, so I can't imagine it's stretched and if I took it off to measure, I'd just put a new one on regardless :D

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Chain / Sprockets advice
« on: 15 January 2023, 09:24:25 am »
I changed my chain when I bought the bike 20, maybe 25k miles ago and over ten years ago! I bought the best DID X-Ring I could get. I now find myself scratching my head as to when I should change that (and maybe the sprockets- which are original at 38k miles) again.

I've adjusted the chain from new no more than twice or maybe I'm forgetting one and it's three times - but certainly no more than that. There are no tight spots, no solid rollers, no stiff links, no excessive play off the rear sprocket. It is and always has been bang on for tightness although I run on the looser side of spec.

The sprockets themselves have no visible signs of wear front or back and certainly no cupping.

As a possible explanation, the bike rarely goes out in wet weather unless I'm touring and get caught out, but whether it does or not, the chain is lubed every couple of hundred miles maximum and cleaned with paraffin fairly regularly - so it usually runs clean.

It's not the money. The bike gets what it needs, when it needs it; but I can't bear to throw away stuff for the sake of it. I was brought up where things were valued and not replaced 'just because'

Thoughts on changing due to the time/mileage, or should I just keep plodding on until things look worn?

Mine is also much smoother with the fuel cut eliminated, but it's been decatted/can, and fuelling mid-top end seems a lot better too

After over 10 years of ownership, I got mine done a couple of weeks ago (2009 model). I visited Wizperformance in person, as I was in the area and he did it whilst I waited. The new map is great! (though I should've probably turned off AIS, cos now it coughs, bangs and backfires even more - childish, I know!). I should have done it years ago, it's transformed the bike.
The guy (Grant, I think his name was) is very helpful and from a brief conversation, definitely knows his stuff. Recommended.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: ABS brake bleeding?
« on: 20 March 2022, 09:45:34 am »
A mate of mine bought an FZ1 with braided hoses on and the seller said his mechanic had refused to ever do another after that one  :lol

One of the braided hoses failed shortly after purchase and I can confirm two things - routing/working on the frame under the fuel tank is a bastard and HEL customer service is amazing - they replaced it without quibble.

One final thing. It put me off enough not to do it on mine  :rollin

It doesn't sound like you need to complicate matters with another project, but some of us Gen2 riders are still interested.

But the main reason for replying is to wonder if you've considered the Raspberry Pi Zero 2? Onboard memory might be an issue, but it's got the same cpu as the 3, so actual processing is quick and the unit is miniscule, even compared to the 3 (I know, as I have one)......just a thought

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: FZ1S vs FZ1 SA
« on: 26 May 2021, 09:28:50 am »
Mine is an SA (ABS is the only difference as far as I'm concerned) and it clearly says 5VY on the side of the engine - as it's an engine part, you could just check for that?

I've had Road 4's and I'm now on my 2nd set of Road 5's (which are better wearing). I can't recommend them enough

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: changing clutch cable
« on: 05 November 2020, 09:36:29 am »
I don't know if this suggestion would be suitable for a Gen2 Fazer, but made the job a piece of piss on my Gen 1.
I got 2 lengths of thin cord. Tied one on the clutch end and one on the handlebar end. Pulled the clutch end through the frame and untied the cord. Then pulled the clutch end down through the frame and untied that length of cord. The old cable is now off the bike leaving 2 lengths of cord threaded through the cable run. Retie the cord to the clutch end and pull it through the frame, and repeat with the lever end, so the cable takes the exact route that the original did. If this is no help, sorry for the intrusion....I'll get my coat :)

There's no way in hell this'll work for a Gen2, which has solid (bent) metal tubing in parts to take it from the left side of the frame to the right side where the clutch is.

I did mine a couple of months ago and it's not massively hard, but having another pair of hands to help holding wiring etc out of the way helps a lot. On mine, I had to take the tank completely off for access because I had it brimmed with fuel and once I'd tipped it to where I wanted it, it was pissing out.

Hardest bit was having to undo a mounting on the right side of the frame above the clutch. I can't remember what it was for, maybe a brake line? - but it had to come out of the way so I could adjust the end at the clutch arm side of the cable. I couldn't get anything on it except an open spanner and it moved about half a flat at a time!

For Sale & Wanted / Re: Wanted: FZ1 with ABS
« on: 01 October 2020, 04:36:49 pm »
I might be able to get my hands on a mint 58 plate red one with ABS (and very expensive braided hoses!) 15k miles.....If you're still looking, let me know via pm. I'm fairly sure it's got the racking for a top box installed too, but I'd have to check. It's as good as you're going to get. I went with the current owner to buy it and the bloke selling was anal. It's done bugger all mileage in the year or two since and he's thinking of selling.

I don't get on here much, but hopefully the pm system will send me an email - I've pm'd you in case it's the same that end  :lol

Had mine 7 years and 25k miles.......no issues whatsoever with gearchange. And whilst I don't wheelie except for the occasional accidental one on power, I ride it with a bit of spirit (once it's warmed up  ;) )

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Hello Me Decide FZS600 to FZ1-S??
« on: 31 October 2019, 09:20:56 pm »

The FZ1 is great and those that say otherwise have either never ridden one or when they did, they didn't actually 'RIDE' it.

I've never had an FZS, so I can't compare, but everything I read says they are for a more relaxed (for me this should read boring) ride.
No, with an engine based on the original R1, it's not remotely boring: Voted world's best Streetbike 2004 as per CycleWorld -  https://www.cycleworld.com/why-original-yamaha-fz1-was-so-damn-good/
But the OP was asking if the updated FZ1 would make a good commuter - compared to the original model, it won't.
Awww. did I hurt your Gen 1 feelings? Bless.  Everything I've ever read about the Gen1 is it's more sedate. I therefore prefer the Gen2 :D

I've had sports bikes and more sedate stuff like Bandits. Get the seat upgraded and an FZ1 is the perfect compromise. Go fast and stay with the litre sports bikes when you want, or pootle around looking at scenery. I bloody love it!

I'd love this for my Gen 2 Fazer, but I don't think it's compatible atm? (I'll be checking back regularly!)
On that note, I looked through your website and there's no mention (I could see) that this is for Gen 1 Fazers only. I'm guessing this was on purpose for future compatibility expansion?, but you might get some orders off people with totally the wrong bike if you don't mention something on your landing page. Just a thought.

I'm definitely interested in this. However, the bezel on the LCD unit is huge and I have my reservations about putting it on the bike tbh

Had a chance of a new Fireblade at 2k below list and 0% finance and I turned it down to stay with the FZ1(S). It's the best all round bike I've ever owned and I can't think of anything that could properly replace it (Maybe an MT10?). It will keep up on the road with anything and having had the seat modded years ago, it's (relatively) comfortable for cruising. I've owned this one for about 5 years and have no intention of changing anytime soon!  :thumbup

Cop intends to use stinger on bikes

I'm going to change this in my head to: "cop picks up stinger from floor.........and remains calm whilst a set of gob-shites mouth off"  Mainly because that's all I saw/heard.

I've just had a set of PR4's on a 2009 FZ1 and after 4k miles, I've had to replace the rear. I'm a bit heavy on the wrist, but they don't last as long as people would have you believe (having said that they are good, so I've gone with them again)......just info to chew over for your decision
