For Sale & Wanted / FZS600 carbs, coils, universal topbox, Givi arms.
« on: 10 August 2014, 10:18:41 pm »
Coils and carbs were both bought to try to fix the hesitation on my FZS600, but they didn't so I gather that they're all ok.  Carbs will need balancing.

Coils with caps.  £25 posted.

Carbs.  £55 posted.

Topbox.  Has a mounting plate thing and two keys.  £20 collected.

Givi topbox arms.  Could honestly do with stripping the paint off and cleaning up but since my bike was a shed I didn't bother.  £20 collected.

Can be collected from Kelvedon, Essex which is between Colchester and Chelmsford.

Thanks very much :)

FZS600 Fazer / Hesitation, surging and crap mpg.
« on: 23 September 2013, 06:09:05 pm »
Hi all, my hesitation problem has got significantly worse recently.  MPG has dropped (140 miles put me between E and 1/4), it still hesitates badly when opening it up and it's also started running really rough on constant throttle.  For example, get up to 5-6k in a lower gear (it's still there in high gears, just less noticeable) and you can feel it surging like it's running ok for a second, then missing, then ok etc.  After my 50 mile run home downpipes 1 + 2 were 220C and 3 + 4 were 170 so something definitely isn't right there.  It's also spitting a lot of black shite out of the exhaust which is presumably my hard earned, half burnt petrol  :'(

It's over-due a service so I want to get oil + filter, air filter, plugs changed this weekend - I changed them ages ago when it was hesitating, but not this bad and none of them had any effect - but what else can I check?  Carbs have been balanced recently and were as close as we could get them and it's had new plug caps a week ago.  I also trimmed the leads recently, couple of months back.

I would like to get a known-good set of carbs on it as I have a gut feeling that they're the problem but a) don't know much about them and b) use the bike every day so can't really afford it to be off road for any amount of time (unless I can borrow the blackbird again, maybe this is a good excuse :D)

So, anyone got any idea of things I can try?  Hopefully this won't turn into another Red98-style epic....

TL:DR
Bike hesitates, what's broken?

Ta very much  :D

General / If you didn't have to wear a helmet, would you?
« on: 18 June 2013, 08:05:02 pm »
I was thinking about this on the way home after seeing a bloke in a turban riding an R1.  If you didn't have to wear one by law, would you?

FZS600 Fazer / Carb sync take-off size?
« on: 09 June 2013, 11:25:38 am »
I want to make up my own carb sync tool as I'm too pikey to spend lots of money on what's essentially a few bits of pipe and a couple of vacuum gauges.  Anyone know what size pipe will go straight onto the vacuum take-off points on the carbs?

« on: 26 March 2013, 07:32:36 pm »

FZS600 Fazer / Brake disks
« on: 15 February 2013, 10:47:47 am »
I'm going to need new disks front and rear pretty soon, does anywhere do them for a reasonable price?  A pattern set on wemoto is almost £350 which seems a bit steep (probably half the value of my bike too).  Where's the best place for them?

Also, are the front right and left disks different?

FZS600 Fazer / Scottoiler oil
« on: 03 January 2013, 09:50:52 pm »
Just fitted a Scottoiler to my bike.  It came with a 250ml bottle of oil but given that it should last ~500-800 miles to a fill that'll last me about 5 weeks.  Is Scottoil stuff the only stuff to use or are there other things that are the same?  I remember someone mentioning chainsaw oil, is there any particular type?

General / Which gloves?
« on: 01 October 2012, 11:45:15 am »
Since my current gloves, despite being called 'Bone Dry', let in more water than the Titanic I'm after a new pair.  I don't want to spend a silly amount but I want a pair that actually keep my hands dry and warm.  Bearing in mind it's coming up to winter and I was thinking of getting some heated grips soon also, has anyone got/used heated gloves?  Are they any good?  I wouldn't mind spending more on the gloves if it saved me getting the grips...

FZS600 Fazer / MOT question
« on: 09 August 2012, 09:22:31 am »
Quick MOT question for you guys... is it a fail if the bars/controls touch the faring?  On full lock left the throttle cables just about touch the faring because a little bit of the stopper thing is broken off.

FZS600 / Which tyres for lots of miles?
« on: 20 July 2012, 08:40:47 am »
Right, I'm due a rear tyre and am not sure what to get.  I do around 25k/year just commuting so I want something that's going to last a long time but not be stupidly expensive or hard as rock.  Any suggestions?

Ta very much  :)

General / It's finally happened :(
« on: 03 July 2012, 01:47:46 am »
Got my licence about 2 months ago and started commuting into London every day, and the inevitible has finally happened :(  Saw it coming but didn't have a chance to avoid it, just came straight at me and what with it being wet and lots of traffic about I couldn't do anything.

Yes, I got shat on by a bird while riding down the A12  :'( Bloody seagulls  :D

FZS600 Fazer / More problems... non-starter and cutting out.
« on: 18 June 2012, 10:05:23 pm »
Had another problem develop this afternoon.  Coming home from work I filled up with petrol, same petrol station as usual (same pump even) but when I went to restart the bike just cranked over and over and didn't want to fire.  Tried a few times, then waited a minute and tried again, more cranking, then it fired up the instant I pressed the button!  Remainder of the journey (another 45 miles ish) it was fine.  When I got home I switched it off and tried starting again and it did the same thing.  It'll just randomly start working and when it does it fires up straight away.  Big backfire out of the exhaust on two occasions but that's just down to all the fuel going through it and not being burnt off I guess.

To add to this, I went for a quick run down the road and when I was turning round in a layby, sitting still in neutral it just conked out - not like a stall, but like I'd turned the ignition off.  Once I'd got it going again it rode home perfectly, plenty of power, no missing or anything.

Now this definitely sounds electrical to me, but what could it be?  It was wet this morning, but it was wet last week and had no issues then... anyone got any ideas?  Need it for work and I can't really afford to have it off the road for any amount of time  :(

Ta very much  :D

FZS600 Fazer / What's this noise?
« on: 16 June 2012, 07:55:36 pm »
Hi guys, calling on your technical knowledge here... My bike has started ticking, any idea what it is?  This is from stone cold and it stays there even when hot.

Any idea?
Ta very much  :)

Please excuse the horrible red bits, the last owner decided to paint bits of it and now I have to work out how to strip it without taking all the other paint off  :rolleyes

General / My Chinese 125
« on: 08 June 2012, 09:00:19 am »
Did my mod 2 test two weeks ago now, just prior to that I'd bought a cheapo (£200) 125cc bike to practice on and get into work for a week.  The night before my test this POS died on the A12 at about midnight - just suddenly lost all power and then had no compression on the starter.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I took the head off to see the damage, think I got the job done pretty well  :rollin   Thought you guys might be interested in the pictures of the damage done...

Bear in mind that this bike was registered in July 2010 and had under 7500 miles on the clock  :eek   On the plus side I sold it for £100 so got half my money back  :D

Introduction / Hello
« on: 21 April 2012, 10:12:42 pm »
Hi everyone, been lurking for a while but thought I'd stick up an introduction post.  Bought a 2001Y FZS600 this morning as my first bike - not got my licence yet but have my mod 2 test on Friday  :)
The headlight will be going and the standard faring/lights back on - not too keen on it as it is and for a commuter the screen will be useful.  The faring is split on both sides but a bit of fiberglass, some sandpaper and a rattlecan will see it right  :lol
