General / Back after a while!
« on: 13 September 2017, 04:52:05 pm »
Hi all

I am back, having bought a tatty fazer 600.

Had a few bikes since my Fazer, most recently an NC750X DCT. With all the motorbike thefts/muggings in London recently,  I didnt want to risk it being nicked, so I sold it and bought a VFR800, which I promptly realised is horrible for London riding.

Along comes the Fazer with one snapped exhaust stud and leaking carbs. Bought for £450 w/50k on the clock.

First thing I did was run it up and see where it was leaking exhaust. Turns out the center pipe was leaking, not the one with the broken stud. They are all pretty cruddy so engine out, wire brush the rusty bits at the front of the frame and other bits.

What is the best way to tidy up the engine whilst its out? Its a bit corrodey at the front around the exhaust ports and around the fins. Will be painting it with hammerite engine stuff on a brush.

If you have proof that its had the engine done then great.

At 120k things like rear shock might need looking at, front shocks internals may be wearing slightly. Steering head bearings and swingarm bearings, apart from that though you should be fine, just check they dont have lots of play in them.

If the pump fails the engine will heat up very quickly, even going along at 70mph, but then gauge would probably still show cold as I think the sensor is in the top of the rad.

Whatever you do, don't go for 3 if you expect to be able to make and receive calls......

"3" used to have GSM network issues in their early days, but their network has improved significantly over the years and is now pretty damn good. I know several friends and family on "3" with no complaints from any of them. This is spread across the south of the country so I can't really comment on the North / Midlands etc etc :P

3 use the o2 network for 2g coverage

Did the water pump not fail? Did the system have enough coolant in it as well?

if you play with the settings in google maps you can turn off any additional layers (satellite, terrain etc), and you can also pe-cache some of your common routes to cut right down on the data usage.

with only the basic map layers on, it should only use between 10-20Mb an Hour. Im on an unlimited data plan (3Gb) so its not a major concern for me.
I did the same but I use my whole 5gb allocation a month either way.

Google maps. Android phone, earpiece. Good for short journeys in town. No screen but is free.

change the earpiece for a bluetooth one (like the SENA SMH10 I have), add a waterproof case to the handlebars, and you have a screen as well.

Google's Navigation app has always worked well on my phone.

MY case is much the same as alexander has posted above.

The data usage is still a problem

Just found co-pilot do a free version where you download the actual maps to your device, so less data to download, works without signal and just uses the gps chip

I had a play with that and the tom tom android version. Neither are as good as Google maps. Shame :)

I use this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-GPS-SAT-NAV-Waterproof-Leather-Case-Mount-Holder-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Cycle-/330807637586?pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item4d05abf652

or something that looks very much like this. Works well, although larger sat navs can be a bit of a squeeze. No problems in the rain.

What you miss from the more expensive motorbike sat navs is bluetooth audio directions, which can be usefull on the motorbike. The motorbike specific sat navs are too expensive in my opinion.

I have used the android phone + headset option as well, but it rinsed my data plan, and dranied my battery very quickly. I also found in the latest google maps update, they stop saying road names and introduce a delay in the instructions which is annoying.

I would repair that.

I have had good luck in the past with these types of repair kits:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TYRE-PUNCTURE-REPAIR-KIT-TUBELESS-MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-CAR-VAN-ATV-QUAD-TRIKE-/321119687788?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4ac439946c

Any closer to the edge though and I would leave it.

There's a facebook group called Biker Booty and someone is breaking a cbr1000fj. It's tatty, but the seat might be a goer by the look of it. There seems to be 2 Biker Booty groups, but it the one with the most members and the skull for an icon.

Thank you indeed! I have spotted it and have asked if it's in good nick! I was going to recover this one, but if this is cheaper then happy days.

Rip all that tupperware off & streetfighter it.

Possibly, the bodywork is half the charm though

Nice project there  ;) and it's cheap enough that you can spend a few quid on it and still get your money back if you want to sell it

Thanks! Thats was the thought about it, I have about 100 pounds worth of fuel in collecting it, just put a a new tyre on it. Going to do the brake seals tomorrow and take it for an MOT friday hopefully.

« on: 08 January 2014, 02:05:22 pm »
Just asked the seller and they said no fitting kit comes with it.  Well just realised renntec are at three legged cross Verwood and I will be driving past tomorrow.  Just going to ask if they can sell a fitting kit with those ally spacers to fill the holes. Cheers for replys chaps.
Cheers
Gav

If you order from Rentec directly, the required bits come with, so Im betting the seller on ebay has lost the bits.

Yeah phone auto spell checker grrr. Rentec I mean.  Was from eBay shop and brand new.  Free disc lock but would of preferred a fitting kit.

Send them a message, they have lost the extra bits! Mine was the same, with disc lock and all, and came with all the bits.

rented or rentec? :)

They should come with longer bolts and spacers to fit them. Was it second hand?
